Prankster's day out!

April Fool's Day is around the corner! We quizzed some television actors and found out how much of a prankster they are !

Riya V Anandwala finds out!

Priya Wal- "No one can fool Arshi!"

Well, it's really difficult to recall of the pranks I have played, as there are many. I remember this particular April Fool's day, when I was in Delhi. I had red ink with me, which I had put on the lower portion of my face, near my chin. My mom was in her bedroom, and laid myself outside her room. As soon as she opened the door, she was half dead. So it was quite a prank. No one ever fooled me, you see, no one can fool Arshi!

Amit Khanna- "The after effects were bad!"

Well, I love playing pranks. I played one on my mom. I bought a bouquet and a saree and sent it to my residence address by courier, with a chit attached to it which read, "I am in love with you and will call, and you have to meet me." My mother was very scared, and was cursing that guy to the core. This went on for four to five hours and then I broke it. The after effects were bad. I remember this incident where my cousin brother called me and said," Amitji, I am calling from Subhash Ghai's production house, we have short listed you as our protagonist, for Mukta Art's next project. The film's name is After the Rape, and we have made films like, Telephone Bhoot, Ganga mein Nanga." Then obviously I got to know that its my brother. But it was just too much.

Rupali Ganguly- " I was wanting to commit a suicide"

I have always played low category pranks. But yes I have been fooled many a times. Once, on the first of April I received a letter saying that you have won the best actress award for your Bengali film; I disbelieved it, as I couldn't ever win such a prestigious award. But then when I got my air tickets a little later than that day, I got to know that I was seriously being called. There was another time, I was in my tenth grade, and my childhood friend, considered a smart dude told me that, "I have got to know about our results, and you have failed in history. "I got too scared and was even planning to commit a suicide, though I don't have the damn guts to do it. He told me this on 30 of March and at night, at 12.00 am, he told me that he was fooling me. Oh what a prank that was.

Tina Parakh- "I cannot tell you how embarrassing it was"

Well, I remember this one incident, which took place long back. I was sitting at my place, a friend of mine called me from down, and said get dressed we are going out. I was a little surprised, as this never usually happens with me. I got totally dressed and went down. I thought there was something fishy going on and as soon as I went down, there was no one at all. Later, I came up to my place and saw that all my friends were upstairs and said, "Happy April Fool's Day". I cannot tell you how embarrassing it was.

Vipul Gupta- "A prankster is always alert!"

On the sets of India Calling, I was sitting with all my co actors and the lights were switched off. It had been six hours and I was thoroughly bored. I called my makeup man and put a white blanket on him and made him hold a candle. He entered the room, and as the lights were off, everyone started shouting, ohh-aah! It was just too good. As far as me being fooled is concerned, I guess never, or may those small ones. What happens is, once you yourself are a big prankster, it is really difficult for anyone to play a prank on you, as you are always alert!

Ekta moves out

"It's just a normal process of growing up," she says, as she shifts into her own apartment

Subhash K Jha

Ekta's new address

Papa Jeetendra's little girl is a big girl now. Ekta Kapoor has moved into her own swanky apartment. "Yes, I've moved into my own apartment," she says. "But do we have to make it public? It's just a normal process of growing up. I'm staying right next to my parent's home. So my parents are just a stone's throw away. I almost can't believe I've moved into my own place, though."

Ekta's new home has its own office where she now conducts her business without needing to rush in and out of Balaji Telefilms' headquarters at unearthly hours.

Not only that. Further proof of Ekta's coming of age is the adult peep into the show world, Kandy Floss. "The other evening I was at a movie hall. And people came up to me to ask me only about what they are going to see next in Kandy Floss," says Ekta. "The show has found wide acceptability among the youth. Actually, I'm shocked at the response to Kandy Floss. I hope the people who make all those irreverent comments take responsibility for what they say. The show is pushing the envelope, and there's bound to be some irreverence."

In this week's episode two TV actors Shabbir Ahluwalia and Akashdeep Sehgal are asked to compare Aishwarya Rai with any fruit of their choice. Ekta laughs, "I certainly don't agree with some of the things said and done on Kandy Floss," she says. "Seriously speaking, I like the fact that the show gives these people a platform to have their say. It's time we learnt to express our views openly. It's far better than getting bitchy behind people's back."

A forthcoming episode features Aryan Vaid and Zulfi Syed talking about the casting couch. Another episode gets Smriti Malhotra and Meghna Naidu together for a debate on morality. Says Ekta, "I'm not even looking at big-screen celebrities. But the way things are going, soon everyone would want to be on the show. So far no one we've invited has refused."

Now Ekta is encouraged to try her hand at more non-fiction. "I'm planning to make a reality show by next year," she says. "Reality has opened up new frontiers on television. My reality show will involve the common man in it." As for the impending generation leap on Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Ekta has pushed it back to take place on her birthday, on June 7.

Chetan shows his wild side
By: Tushar Joshi
April 3, 2006

Getting ready for his scuba dive
Chetan Hansraj loves travelling; and adventure sports are his favourite pastime. So when he decided to take a break, Chetan went rock-climbing and scuba diving.

"This time, I went alone as I had decided to do some introspection and chill out by myself. I didn't want to do the usual Pattaya-Bangkok circuit, so I went to this cluster of islands that are situated very close to each other."

Went rock-climbing

There are two sections to this beach — east and west. The eastern region is covered with giant lava mountains made of lava eruptions. I went rock-climbing there and it was great fun because those mountains are tough terrain and you have to work really hard.

Rock-climbing at Railey
Sunset at Phuket

I was the only single guy on the beach that evening. There were couples all around me and it did feel a bit lonely. But I wanted to get some space
by myself, so it helped.

And the sunset was simply spectacular.

With Krabi in the background
Scuba diving

The colour of the water and the sky matched perfectly and it was heavenly. I had to go through a course to learn scuba diving and it was so cool to see all the coloured fish and aquatic life.

Sunset at Pattaya
Work and play

Apart from chilling out, I also shot for Raj Kaushal's film Anthony Kaun Hai? It was great fun, though my role isn't lengthy.

The character is really important to the storyline. I shot for a song and a couple of scenes.

Apart from me, Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi are also in the film.

Where he went…

Poorva Gokhale returns to work
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 4, 2006

Hello, I am back to work: Poorva Gokhale

New mum Poorva Gokhale is back on the sets. Three months after delivering a baby girl, the telly actress has started shooting as Gunn for Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii again.

Poorva's baby was born on December 24, and has been named Anushka. "My mother-in-law takes care of Anushka when I am shooting. I have requested a day shift, from 10 am to 5 pm. I have just started and, hopefully, everything will work out fine."

Why is she back so soon? "I had asked for maternity leave. It's now over and I have resumed work, like other working women do. Sunday was my first day on the Kahaani sets. The scene involved a phone call saying that Gunn is returning to the Agarwal parivar," says the actress.

No weight gain

Poorva has not gained much weight after her delivery. "I have put on just a little, but it is not too striking. This has enabled me to get back to shooting soon."

A fortnight ago, Poorva also began shooting her Marathi serial, Bhagyavidhata, for ETV Marathi. "For the first two days, I took Anushka along with me to the studios. But as I stay in Thane, and shoots happen at different places, it is difficult to take her everywhere; she is more comfortable at home."

Poorva admits that on the first few days of shooting, she kept thinking about her baby and how she would cope. "I found it difficult. Physically, I was present at the shoot, but mentally, I was with the baby. But I am beginning to get used to it and can't wait to rush home after pack-up."

Marathi show

Though Poorva had opted out of Kahaani in the early stages of her pregnancy, she continued to shoot for Bhagyavidhata till days before her delivery. "I shot with them till December 15 and delivered on December 24. I could manage well right till the end," she explains.

Poorva is married to Kedar Gokhale who is not from the entertainment world. "I have immense support from my mother-in-law so let's see how I manage shooting for both shows, along with taking care of my three-month-old baby," she says.
More about Poorva

Poorva Gokhale was earlier seen as Kajal in Sony drama Kkoi Dil Mein Hain. She made her acting debut in Rhimjhim (Alpha Marathi) and acted in several Marathi serials, till she got a Hindi break with Balaji show, Kkoi Dil Mein Hai, which was followed by Kahaani.

By: Shaheen Parkar
April 6, 2006

Aakhir mujhe hua kya hai? Kiran Karmarkar
Kiran Karmarkar (the erstwhile Om of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii) was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He is presently in the ICU at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra.

Mystery illness

After having battled high fever for over a week, the actor was advised hospitalisation, after he collapsed. The fever hasn't subsided even after doses of prescribed medication.

The actor is currently undergoing a series of tests to decipher the cause of his illness.

When we spoke to his actress wife Rinku Karmarkar (Chhaya of Kahaani) on Tuesday immediately after he was admitted, she sounded very tense. "Please call me later," she requested.

On Wednesday, when we checked with Rinku again, she affirmed, "Yes, Kiran had to be admitted to the ICU. We don't know what exactly is wrong. This is really a cause of worry for us.

There has been some internal bleeding and his blood platelet count is low. He is undergoing a series of tests including a CT scan. We all hope that everything is fine and he returns home soon."

Rinku Karmarkar
Karmarkar had been rehearsing for his new Hindi play, Mera Naam Joker, directed by Shubha Khote and written by her daughter Bhavna Balsaver. The play is slated to open on April 16 at Manik Sabhagriha auditorium, Bandra.

Incidentally, Karmarkar is also scheduled to leave for Singapore on April 11. His other Hindi play, Kacche Lamhe, has been invited to be staged as part of the Celebrating India week in Singapore.

This Salim Arif directed relationships drama, which also stars Harsh Chhaya and Lubna Salim, has a show lined up on April 13 at Singapore's noted Victoria Theatre.

Kiran's concerned

"Even though he is in the ICU, he is repeatedly telling the doctors to get him back on his feet soon. He is extremely concerned as both his plays have shows lined up next week," adds Rinku.

Khote, meanwhile, is hoping that Karmarkar is soon on the road to recovery. "We will wait and see how his condition is, over the next three to four days. Otherwise, we will have to postpone Mera Naam Joker to a later date. There is no point of having the play's premiere without him."

As the various test results are awaited, Karmarkar has his share of star-gazers even in the ICU. "All the visitors of the other patients in the ICU also want to see him!" says Rinku.

The price of fame!

All good thing comes with a price tag! Sometimes celebs pay the price of their fame with their privacy, sometimes with things more tangible! We spoke to some of them to find out how they feel about being constantly under the media glare!

Riya V Anandwala gets them to talk on this topical issue.

Mihir Mishra- "People are constantly speculating about my life"

Mihir Mishra

I agree we have to pay a price of being a celebrity at times. The culprits of the Jessica Lal case are moving around scot-free, and a high status celebrity like Salman Khan who has killed two black bugs is suffering for seven damn years to prove himself! It has certainly happened with me too. After one and a half year of marriage, I had put on some weight, so people started calling up and asking whether I have started drinking? People are constantly speculating about my life. Why don't they get it, that we are humans too, and we too like breaking rules!

Rupali Ganguly- "I have never been treated special"

Rupali Ganguly

No, I don't think that way. I feel, we all are equal and I have never been treated special, by anyone around just because I am a celebrity. I have banged my car so many times into trucks, but people have always helped me out, just because I am just another human being! I still mix around with people. I also bargain at the grocery shops!

Parmeet Sethi-" There are times when we feel conscious about doing certain things!"

Parmeet Sethi

I feel there are a very few disadvantages of being a celebrity as compared to innumerable advantages we have. Yes, there are certain times when we feel very conscious of doing things, but I guess we pay a very small price of being a celebrity then! It did happen with me too, once I broke a queue as I was in hurry. Well, I am not really fond of doing that, but I was genuinely getting late. A gentleman stopped me, and said that you being a celebrity shouldn't do such a thing. I gave it a thought and went back. These are routine things, which one should acknowledge.

Vikas Bhalla-"We do loose our privacy"

Vikas Bhalla

Yes, obviously that happens. People look up to us, and we need to be careful of not doing things which will make a negative impression. We have to be very careful, and in turn we do loose our privacy. Whenever I go for a run on the beach, people constantly stare at me, I loose my concentration on running and instead take a u-turn! There are 100s of people there, but people stare only at me! Only because I am a celebrity, so somewhere we do pay a heavy price!

Nikhil Arya-"People don't even confirm the information from us"

Well, we certainly have to pay a heavy price for our fame. I will give you a very small instance which happened with me. A popular television magazine wrote that I was buying a ring for Karishma Tanna just because they spotted me at a jewelry shop. They didn't have the decency to confirm it with me, as I was buying it for my sister who is in U.S. And later when Karishma called them up, they carried it in their next issue saying that "Karishma calls us up, and she didn't get the ring probably!" I have nothing to say about these things.
