If Aamir Ali had been Abhay Kapoor....

Aamir Ali's only claim to TV fame has been Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

But there was a time once when he was Nausheen Alii Sardar's boyfriend, a time when both were into modelling. When Nausheen bagged the title role in Kkusum, she wanted him to play Abhay Kapoor. But then, we have it on authority that Ekta was clear about having Anuj Saxena for the role of Abhay. That spelt the end of Nausheen's dreams of having Aamir as her on screen hero.
After Kkusum became a huge hit, Nausheen and Aamir broke off and Vikas Kalantri came into the picture, when Nausheen shot with him and Anuj Saxena for a music video, and she played Vikas's Bhabhi. The reason why Nausheen and Aamir Ali broke off is not known. If Aamir Ali was selected to play Abhay Kapoor then he would have been in a different league in the television industry. Everyone knows that one role of Abhay Kapoor has taken Anuj Saxena places.

Not many however know that Kkusum is one show where most stars today worked once upon a time. The list includes Hiten Tejwani, Tassnim Sheikh, Moonmoon, Manish Goel, Narayani Shastri, Aashish Kaul, Shweta Kawaatra, Manav Gohil...phew! Aamir's really missed the chance of being part of the Kkusum brigade!

Don't regret quitting Kahaani: Mohnish
By: Sandipan Dalal
March 23, 2006

Mohnish Behl
It's been barely three days since Mohnish Behl walked out of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, and the actor is already finding his feet in films. His latest film is Rajashri's Vivaah, where he plays a cameo.

Confirms the actor, "I have taken up a couple of films and am in the process of getting back into my Bollywood mould. But I'm yet to sit with the script and get a taste of my character."

Talking about Vivaah, Mohnish says, "It's a gesture of my long association with the Rajshris (remember Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Saath Saath Hain?). They have been instrumental in giving me a foothold in the industry."

No slotting

The actor started off portraying negative characters and later moved to character roles. "It was never an intentional move," he says. "I lapped up what came my way and I'm glad it has worked as a blessing in disguise. Unlike many actors, I never got typecast. In fact, as an actor I've never been spoilt with choices to make. It depends on the filmmaker to decide the role I suit the best."

On life after Kahaani, he adds, "As far as television is concerned, I have nothing right now. I don't know how long the stay-home period is going to be."

Creative difference

What's the real reason behind his quitting the show? "I had made it clear that I was not going to replace the character of Om Agarwal in any which way. But I don't think it was communicated to the Balaji authorities and the plot was gradually leading to the marriage of Suyash Mehra and Parvati Agarwal. That's the only creative difference I had with them."

Why didn't he do Kasamh Se? "It was not my call. I was asked to leave as they felt that I should give more time to Kahaani," he explains.

Reacting to reports of his starry tantrums on the sets, Mohnish says, "I have never thrown tantrums. I'm a stable and levelheaded person who doesn't believe in such petty stuff. It's the quality of the work that matters to me. And I have no complains against Balaji."

Anoop to play Suyash Mehra
By: Sandipan Dalal
March 23, 2006

Anoop Soni
Anoop Soni gets into the shoes of Mohnish Behl and is all set to play Suyash Mehra in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Says Soni, "I had not been following the show before Balaji approached me.

Now, I've been regularly watching it to get a feel of the foundation set by a seasoned actor like Mohnish.

When you are replacing someone on television, you have to get your basics right as the viewers are tuned to the character."

Pressure's on

Are expectations to high? "I wouldn't call it pressure but there's a slight scepticism about how well I will settle into the role. Our creative director, Sandiip Sikcand, has been briefing me during the extensive narrations and it's helping me a lot. But I have to add my own flavour to the framework.

The show will have me wearing formal suits with classic cuts and rich colours. It's going to be more fancy than the sober ones I sported during my CID days."

This is not Soni's first stint with Balaji Telefilms. The actor had previously shot for ten days while playing a cameo in Kahin To Milenge on SaharaOne.

Adds Soni, "Balaji Telefilms has always been kind to me. In fact, I couldn't take up a few shows because of my film commitments. I was offered the role of Anupam Kapadia and Mihir in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi. I'm glad I've finally made it."

Greying well

While a creative difference saw Mohnish Behl's ouster, Soni seems comfortable with the impending plot.

"I'm focussing on the equation my character shares with Parvati Agarwal. What appeals to viewers is Suyash Mehra's attitude and chemistry with Parvati. And playing an older character was never a problem with me," he says.

Homing in!

Home is where the heart is and the heart is definitely where the family is! This is something that our telly stars seem to believe in. But it's not easy for these actors to manage their family lives given their hectic schedules and erractic timings.

Riya V Anandwala talks to a few telly personalities about the pros and cons of staying with their family.

Abhay Vakil

There are many benefits of staying with the family. Firstly, I get a lot of support from them whenever I am feeling low. Secondly, whenever I am done with a hard day's work, I have someone to look forward too. They are always there in my good or bad times, which is very essential for me. But yes, I cannot have too much of late nights as I have some responsibilities. And then I too feel guilty, that I have my loved one's back home. Another thing is my phone which keeps ringing, which used to annoy them, but now they have got use to it!

Tassnim Sheikh

My family has always been very supportive of me, my mother has been ill before I stepped in the industry, but my father is extremely compassionate whether I am right or wrong. I can't even imagine staying away from my family; I don't have to pay the rent as I have my own house here. My food is always ready, and I need someone to lay the blanket on me at night. All I can see are benefits of staying with them. And I don't want to live without them. The very thought seems like a nightmare and scares me!

Tina Parakh

Living in with my family is a complete boon! The most important benefit is that, when you meet so many people day in and day out one tends to get carried away, but having a family here we have rules and regulations laid down. You have to go back home on time as someone is waiting for you. The second thing is loneliness. There is so much of stress we face everyday, that we really need to discuss about things, which makes us feel good. We don't have to take tensions of paying up electricity and telephone bills, not to worry about the food in the kitchen. Because of my odd working hours my family life gets harmed at times. My parents don't sleep till I go home. Otherwise they are very cool of me coming home late, they never complain at all!

Mona Singh

There are only pros and no cons! Initially, when I moved in here, I didn't have my parents with me, they were still in Pune. Then I realised how important it is to have your parents with you especially when you are in a field like this. It feels good when your family is waiting back home for you, I get to eat ghar ka khana cooked by my mom. It is a major strength for me. Going out late nights was never a problem for me, as my dad was in the army, and there you have to party. Sometimes when I don't go partying for months together, my parents tell me to go! And on the contrary I crib, that I don't want to go.

Gurdeep Kohli

I can just see advantages of living with my family. I am talking about my mom in terms of family, because it's only the two of us staying together. There are no disadvantages at all; on the contrary it is of great help. Everything in my life is taken good care off. My mother doesn't sleep till I am home, and I feel bad about that. My family has been very supportive of me, in the sense that my mom has adjusted to my lifestyle and never complains about it. I think I have ot the best mother, of all what I could ask for!

"Amrita advised me to try out television!"

This is one man who's happy with the deal God has given him! His sentences are punctuated with the word 'fantastic' and he's enjoying every bit of the adulation that he's getting. Kamal Sadanah is the complete rockstar in the truest sense, not only because he's charming and down to earth, but because he has chosen to take failure and pain in his stride and moved on, keeping only the good things in mind....and realised his true calling! The actor is currently doing Kasamh Se, Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

Kamal Sadanah

Ananya Sengupta spoke to the elusive star, who refused to take calls on the sets of his shows, but called back later, keeping his promise!

"I am having a fantastic time"
I am today busy doing three Balaji shows and really it's fantastic. I'm having a great time! Maybe I'm saying all this because I am new and still to expereince the hectic life, but as of now, I am happy! My track is increasing by the day and what really started as a guest appearance has now a whole new dimension. I am happy that my work's being appreciated.

"There's no such thing as 'I didn't get my due!'"
We are all responsible for what we get. I can never get back the young blood or the age that I had when I entered the industry. There are certain things that can happen only when one's young!

"I signed a bunch of bad films"
I never had anybody to guide me! I signed bad films and paid the price. I don't regret them because they gave ne a brilliant lifestyle for sometime, I didn't have to worry about finances and I had absolute independence. I could travel, go water rafting and also explore my spiritual side!

"Marriage has changed me"
Marriage has made my life! It's totally the greatest thing that has happened to me. And now with another baby on the way, life couldn't be better!

"With Karkash, I have explored the new Indian woman"
Karkash talks about male chauvinism. There I have explored my own relationship with my wife. It talks about the challenges that the woman faces in the present day and age. I have tried to expose the double standards that exist in the society!

"Dingy advised me to try out television"
Dingy, (Amrita Singh) advised me to try television. One evening couple of months later, I was offered the role. I didn't discuss anything, just the character and in two days time, I was on! And two months down the line, I am still here!

Kamal with wife Lisa

"Balaji doesn't pay me for taking calls on the sets"
I think it's unprofessional to take calls on the sets of the shows I am doing! It's not because I enjoy having journalists chase me, but because, I think it's unfair! I don't think

"I haven't spoken to Ekta Kapoor yet"
I had known Ekta during my school days. But I haven't spoken to her or met her since! Now, I am doing three of her shows, I guess I am just plain lucky!

"There should be an award for the creative guys at Balaji"
I am totally amazed at the way that the guys work here! They change tracks, complicate things and not only manage to remember what's happening in the different tracks, but also manage to sort them out finally!

Kamal in his younger days!

"The actors here make no fake efforts to be friendly..."
All the actors on the sets of these shows made me feel amazing when I first started out. They treat you as if you are the latest member to join the family. They helped me to adjust to everything around me. They are very professional, they come on time and kleave when their work is done!

"I will not do movies again"
No movies for me ever again! I'm happy with what I have.

Excited, but clueless

The stingy Monisha of Sarabhai V/S Sarabhai is one clueless girl in real life. Rupali Ganguli is supposed to play a cameo in Rajshri's Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki (of course she is excited about it) but she doesn't have a clue what her role is about! She says, "I didn't ask them about my role…. I didn't feel the need to ask. I have known the Barjatyas since childhood. They are like family. My father (Anil Ganguli) has worked with them too. I thought it is a great opportunity to act in a Rajshri serial, so I simply said 'yes'."

She further continues, "It comes as a surprise to many people that I am playing a cameo… normally I never do so. Also, I am very finicky about the roles I take up. I ask so many questions about the role and the serial that I tend to be quite a pain in the producer's neck."

As for Sarabhai V/S Sarabhai, she says, "I miss it so much. It was my daily dose of laughter therapy."
