Star of the week: By Raziqueh Hussain
Karishma's tryst with destiny began with playing sonu in KAhaani ghar ghar ki. she became popular after princess dollie on star plus

She :is vivacious, bubbly and full of life. An Ekta Kapoor find, Karishma Randeva began her career as Sonu in Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii but Princess Dollie was the character that put her in the limelight. Now she's all set for a new innings with Maahi Ve.

A prankster
Born and brought up in Chandigarh, Karishma was a naughty kid. "We were a group of friends who loved to play pranks. At the receiving end were our teachers in school. Once we put a live cockroach in a chalk box. The moment our teacher opened the box the scared cockroach scampered out and the whole class burst into laughter. Thirty minutes were wasted this way and we had plenty of fun that day."

The journey so far...
"It has been beautiful. I don't regret any of the roles I have played so far. Every step of the way has been enjoyable. I have worked very hard for this fame. There have been days where I have worked for 20 to 22 hours a day. But today I'm delighted." Her tryst with destiny began with playing Sonu in Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii. Then she played the character of Rano, Disha's sister in Tumhari Disha, but walked out of the serial after a while. Princess Dollie aur uska magic bag turned her into a telly princess whom the young audience loved. Maahi Ve is her latest serial which revolves around a girl called Preeto. She's currently playing Neha, the lead protagonist's sister in Rabba Ishq Na Hove. Apart from this, she is also going to co-host Hungama Fungama on Hungama TV.

Her likes
"I really love children, which is why I'm co-hosting Hungama Fungama. Besides, a lot of children are my fans," Karishma says. Her weaknesses are chocolates and ice creams. And like many other youngsters she hates cleaning her room. In her spare time she likes to read and meditate. "I prefer Snow-white and the Seven Dwarfs to other fairy tales. After all she gets everything that she wants." Connecting with her inner self and maintaining peace is her top priority. "I'm a shopaholic and love to buy anything from jewellery to bags, clothes and shoes. In fact shoes are the toughest to buy as I have small feet." She recalls one instance when she was at a studio to get her portfolio shot, the photographer clicked pictures only of her feet as he claimed they were beautiful!

Passionate about films
"I don't like the sleazy kind of films that are being made today. I come from an orthodox family and my parents wouldn't like to see me doing such films," she says. A complete movie buff, her favourite movie is Chaalbaaz. "My dream role's would be that of Ayesha Kapoor's (the little girl in Black) as well as Rani's role in Black."

CID on the move

Aditya Srivastava, Manasi Verma and Shivaji Satam
Actor Shivaji Satam has a second passion apart from acting — Mexican cusine.

The central Mumbai based actor can often be spotted at On The Move, a concept restaurant at Prabhadevi famous for its Mexican cuisine.

And the latest we hear is that Fireworks Productions' head honcho Pradeep Upoor with his CID and CID Special Bureau teams also makes a beeline for the same restaurant often traveling from Andheri to the central suburbs.

All that spicy Mexican food must be keeping the CID brains stimulated.

Ramu's Bhoot replaces Kawaatra
By: Shaheen Parkar
December 23, 2005

Shweta Kawaatra
This latest replacement in telly land may appear to have scary overtones, but the truth is far from it.

Shweta Kawaatra, who played the character of music director Reva, is out of the Zee daily Saat Phere. She has been replaced by Barkha Madan, who was seen as Manjeet (the bhoot), in Ram Gopal Varma's horror flick Bhoot, starring Ajay Devgan and Urmila Matondkar.

"It was an amicable and mutual decision," claims producer Sunjoy Waddhwa. "It was purely a case of dates. When we wanted Shweta, she would be busy with her other commitments. Shweta was part of the cast when the show was announced, even though her entry happened later. She did about 15 episodes with us."

Barkha Madan
Waddhwa says s that the track had her character aiding Neil (Rakesh Bapat) to make it in the industry. "Later, there was also a romantic track with Neil," he adds.

TV regular

Madan has been seen on the small screen in Sanjay Khan's serial Kranti-1857 on DD-1 and Vinod Pandey's serial Mera Humsafar on DD-1. She was also part of an Anglo-Dutch telefilm, Driving Miss Palmen, directed by Shashi Ranjan.

"We have just finalised Barkha for the role and will begin shooting shortly," adds Waddhwa, who earlier produced Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand (Star Plus).

Celebration time

Kawaatra was unavailable for comment. She is presently away in the Bahamas with husband Manav Gohil, to celebrate her first marriage anniversary, which falls on Christmas day.

She is expected to be back around January 6. "Her exit was not due to her being away for all these days. She had informed us about the trip beforehand," says Waddhwa.

Post her exit as Pallavi in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus), and Esha in Kkusum (Sony), Kawaatra was missing from the soap front. She did a cameo in

Replacements are the name of the game on television. Actors cannot take any character for granted....there are times when an actor is replaced without even his knowing about it. But that's how the media works, and perhaps with so much money and resources on the line, that these things seem fair. Tellychakkar.com take a look at actors who have been ousted form shows and found out what they were upto.
Out in the cold

A twist in the story, or a foible of the production house? A channel whim or an actor's tantrum? What is it that results in an actor being replaced by another in an ongoing show, and how do they cope with the sudden changes in their life? Vickey Lalwani probes the issue.

SWETTA KESWANI: She kicked Ekta Kapoor's 'Kahaani...' for Aroona Irani's 'Des Mein...'. But was it any use? She was asked to leave 'Des Mein...' if she wasn't ready to age. While 'Des Mein...' sucked up to Sangeeta Ghosh for a revival in its fortunes, Swetta was not given even a second look. On the other hand, Ekta's 'Kasautii...' is still rocking. Says Swetta, "I would say that television works on a day-to-day basis. If you are not happening, or the script needs
to be twisted in order to arouse the interest- you can't blame anybody. There are big stakes involved here, at times, far more than in a film. Would you want to term this as cruel? shouldn't
you rather say it's too strict and professional?"

SHWETA KAWAATRA: The lady opted out of Ekta Kapoor's 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii'. She claims she has received good offers but who knows the inside story? Recently, she nearly lambasted Balaji Telefilms in an interview to a section of the press. People said that Paravati and Pallavi were the two eyes of 'KGGK'. Did 'KGGK' go down on TRPs after Shweta's walk out? Not a bit!

ASHLESHA SAWANT:Where did this girl go after Balaji reduced her to a photograph on Sumeet Sachdeva's table in 'Kyunki...'? Some people say that she is very pally with Sandeep Baswana, while some even say that the two are living together.

PALLAVI JOSHI: Star Plus' 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Dhoom' changed tracks suddenly and in the process, Pallavi was left out of the storyline. Says she, "I was narrated an entirely different story. But the story was going in an altogether different direction when I started shooting. I was supposed to fall for a younger guy (played by Vishal Singh) but there was nothing happening on that front in any of the 18 episodes I worked. I am a senior actress who loves challenging portrayals and I had been reduced to a glorified extra." The production house didn't even bother to inform her
personally. "They just sent me a letter one fine day, that the track was changing and I wouldn't be required anymore."

Still smarting from the slight, "Creativity has been reduced to zero, television has gone completely corporate. It feels like TV has been reduced to selling shampoos."

SANDEEP BASWANA: One hears that Balaji had problems with Sandeep, because of which he was ousted from 'Kyunki...' and 'Kkoi Dil Mein Hai' almost around the same time. The inside story? The poor guy needed a break; he had reached a point where he felt that he was saturated. He asked Balaji to cut his roles for some time so that he could spend some time on a holiday. Result? Need we repeat!

MIHIR MISHRA: Dr Rahul of 'Sanjivani- A Medical Boon' may have thought that he would grow as an actor by taking up something different in Zee's 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' (Aditya Ramchandran) but
did that last long? Didn't he end up virtually saying that the show was a bane and not a boon? But who cares? Producer Shrishti Arya quickly winded up the entire Ramchandran parivaar!

SONIYA KAPOOR: Bechari Soniya got wiped out of Zee's 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' for no rhyme or reason. Just because her on-screen husband was giving trouble to the makers of the show, she was told that she was no more required. 'KHKN' is going on as if nothing ever happened. The three friends' story is being tweaked to accommodate more characters, a fresh storyline is being worked out. Says Soniya, "This is not fair. I am really disappointed that television functions like this. I didn't even realise what was happening on the Mihir front. Everything seemed so hunky dory, but the off-screen drama seems to be more intriguing!"

NAUSHEEN ALI SARDAR:A household name as long as she did the 'Kkusum' title role. After that, she's almost been left twiddling her thumbs in Star Plus' 'Kalcchakra'. People cruelly discarded her in her three portrayals in the thriller show; not even one role has really been appreciated. She has signed a couple of films. But have those projects kicked off?

GITANJALI TIKEKAR:Where did this Aparna disappear? Back to her hometown Pune? Or has she married Cezanne Khan and tucked herself safely in some corner in Mumbai as the grapevine goes? Whatever,
while Aparna committed murders, people went crazy about her character, but when she decided not to play the 18-year leap, Balaji ternminated her character without any delay. So what if the leap was delayed by few months? The dead do not come back on Indian television if they challenge the Creatives!

RAJEEV KHANDELWAL:Where was his character heading? 'Kahiin To Hoga', the show which started with him in the lead should have him in the centre at least most of the time. Why don't the same rules apply on Niki Aneja Walia, Juhi Parmar, Ronit Roy, Sakshi Tanwar and Smriti Z Iraani? They're always around. Plus some of the scenes shot on him have been pretty laughable. Remember the scene where he applies cold cream on his face and Aamna springs out of nowhere and the couple rub each other's cheeks? The way the ratings are going steady, despite Sujal (and even Kashish) hardly being there, we feel Balaji can continue the show well enough even without him. Or will it? Says Rajeev, "Agar main hokar bhi nahin hoon, to this, I think you should ask the Creatives."

AKASHDEEP SAIGAL: As long as he was Ansh, he was a rage. Some even thought that no character on Indian television had been conceived bigger than this. But once mother Tulsi Virani shot him dead, people stopped talking about him. His new role as Trishul in 'Kkusum' has failed to create even a whimper. It will not be wrong to say that he will require luck to draw eyeballs to his role in Ketan Mehta's new show on Zee TV.

MAULI GANGULY: The day she left 'Kaahin Kissii Roz', she found herself swimming against the tide. 'Saaksshi' on Sony was a major disaster but the poor girl kept her cool. Think about it, did she have a choice? Her recent return to Manish Goswami's forthcoming show ('Sarkaar' or 'Swaarth'or whatever the channel finally decides on) is no compensation for her earlier roles. Last time, she told us that she was not sure whether she'd go ahead being Rohit and Ronit Roy's sister in the same show, for she wan't happy the way her track had been worked out.

VINOD SINGH:Agreed that he behaved violently on the sets of Sony's 'Aayushman'. But if a film actor does the same (and there have been cases galore!), is he chucked out? Where is that
programme which he told us (soon after the police case in 'Aayushman') was happening for him on Star Plus?

Will Mona Singh continue to be noticed and talked about after she unveils herself eventually?

Or is it that popularity on Indian television has a short shelf life? Is this popularity just 15 seconds under the sun?

(Parvati in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii)

I will be taking a 10-day break from work starting from December 22 To January 2. I will be going to my hometown, Alwar and spending time with my family.

My brother had a baby boy in November, but due to work commitments I have not been able to spend time with him, which I intend to do now. My New Year's resolution till now, has mainly been to stay in shape and be fit and try to lose some weight, but this year, I'll think of something else to do.

Om will be back in Kahanii soon
Believe it or faint, Om Agarwal, played by Kiran Karmarkar will be seen once again in Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii. After all the brouhaha about Om's death and Parvati suffering as a widow, Om will finally be back. So looks like Kahanii is also going the Kyunkii way. In Kyunkii too Anupam Kapadia (Aman Verma) was shown as Tulsi's suitor but Mihir (Amarr Upadhyay) had returned on the day of their wedding. Here in Kahanii, after finding that Suyash Mehra nurses a soft corner for Parvati and is on the verge of proposing marriage to her, Om will be seen making a dramatic comeback. What is not yet confirmed is how Om's re-entry will be shown as his face was clearly visible when he died. Seems like Ekta has a tough time maintaining the high tempo of drama on her shows!

Om's scare tactics

Kiran Karmarkar
Post his exit as Om in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kiran Karmarkar said that he was quitting, because he wanted to take a break from television. But from tonight he will be seen in horror series Darna Mana Hai (Star One) this week.

This week's series is directed by film director, Hriday Shetty (Plan, Pyar Mein Twist), so is that the reason that Karmarkar agreed to feature in the four episodes of Darna Mana Hai? Films have always been on Karmarkar's mind. He will also be seen in an untitled Marathi film directed by Pankaj Sachdev.

His co-stars include Aishwarya Narkar, Ashok Saraf and Rohini Hattangady. On the theatre front, Karmarkar's Hindi play Kacche Lamhe directed by Salim Arif plays this weekend at Prithvi. And as for his reported comeback from the dead in Kahaani, he says, "No comments."

Big Fights of the year
By: A hitList Correspondent
December 26, 2005

Five off-screen dramas that rocked the TV world this year

Dolly Bindra (right) said Raja Chaudhary harassed her at Anuj Saxena's (left) bash
1. Who fought?
Dolly Bindra and Shweta Tiwari's husband, Raja Choudhary.

Over what?
Dolly claims Raja groped her and made sexual advances towards her at Anuj Saxena's party in Juhu. The actress filed an FIR with the police. Choudhary, on the other hand, accused Bindra of being drunk.

Patch-up hua kya?
This one still has enough fuel in the fire to start another fight.

2. Who fought?
Ekta Kapoor and Rajeev Khandelwal.

Rajeev Khandelwal
Ekta Kapoor
Over what?

The Balaji head honcho locked horns with Khandelwal over many issues. After going back and forth on his statements about doing Kahiin To Hoga, Kapoor finally gave him an ultimatum in May.

Balaji insiders said they could not deal with Rajeev's constant interfering with the script. While he decided to adopt a wait-and-watch policy, it didn't take much time for Ekta to show him the way out.

Patch-up hua kya?
It will take a miracle for Khandelwal to get back in the Balaji stable. A perfect case of forgotten, but not forgiven.

3. Who fought?
Shweta Tiwari and Ronit Roy.

Ronit Roy
Shweta Tiwari
Over what?
This happened on the Kasautii Zindagi Kay sets — famous for harbouring some of the top fights of the year.

Apparently, Shweta was peeved with Ronit when he made her wait too long while he rehearsed his lines. In protest, the actress stormed off the sets and made her point clear. Ronit, on the other hand, refused to comment on the incident, but did admit he wasn't great friends with Tiwari.

Patch up hua kya?
Insiders say such incidents were regular occurrences on the Ksautii sets, often bringing shoots to a halt. However, things seem to be back to normal between the two after Shweta recently danced with Roy to an item number at an awards function.

4. Who fought?
Anuj Saxena and Ekta Kapoor.

Anuj Saxena
Over what?
Ekta Kapoor
This year, Ekta had to deal firmly with quite a few men in her camp (Rajeev Khandelwal, Rakshak Sahani and Ronit Roy). With Anuj, the issue was his bad-mouthing his own show, Kkusum, to others.

Apart from that, there was the money issue, and the fact that he wasn't cooperative about dates.

This resulted in Kapoor throwing Saxena out of the show, even as it neared its end.

Patch-up hua kya?
Anuj's absence at the recently held Kkusum party answers this question.

Sachin Sharma
5. Who fought?
Sachin Sharma
and the CID Special Bureau team.

Over what?
Sachin's ridiculous demands on the sets got him fired. The fight happened when Sachin asked for a make-up van, that could not be provided. Sachin stormed off the set, and senior producer Yash Patnaik, showed him the door.

Patch-up hua kya?
Sharma claimed he had no regrets about his behaviour; he said he didn't miss being part of CID Special Bureau any more.
