Shweta Kawaatra in short film
By: Tushar Joshi
December 27, 2005

KALIYON KA CHAMAN:
Shweta and Kapil in Kaash
After taking a short break from commercial and mainstream drama, Shweta Kawaatra will now be seen in a short film, titled Kaash. Dealing with the subject of extramarital affairs, the project also stars director Anil Sharma's brother, Kapil.

"I play her lover in the film. Keeping in mind the sensitivity of the subject, we have taken great efforts to make an aesthetic film," he says.

Colourama

Produced and directed by Smita Kapoor, Kaash has been interestingly shot in only three colours. "Red, black and white are the three prominent colours used in the film. Right from the sets, to the costumes and promotions, you will see everything in most of these shades," explains Kapil.

Open end

Kaash starts off with Shweta leading a married life, but leaving her husband after differences arise. After a while, she becomes friendly with Kapil and decides to start living in with him. "The film doesn't reach a fixed conclusion. It has an open end — the viewer can derive whatever he or she wishes after seeing it."

This is Kapil Sharma's first short film; he previously acted in his brother's film, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon. "I am doing a solo project, titled Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, opposite three newcomer girls. It will be a romantic comedy and should be in theatres sometime in March," he says.
Kaash will be on the national and international festival circuit soon.

New Year in Motion!

2 006 is just around the corner and the preparations have started big time. Partying for ushering the new year is a casual deal for our television stars, so what is so special about this New Year's Eve? What are their big plans for the big day? And the most important pact is the New Year Resolution. Do they make any? And if they do, do they follow it sincerely?

Riya V Anandwala goes around asking stars about their New Year bit.

Rex D'souza

Rex D'souza

Well, I will be doing a show in Agra. This year has been really fortunate for me. Fame Gurukul is of course the first reason for my happiness and apart from that there have been many reasons to celebrate. There are no New Year resolutions as such. And I feel there is no point making one. But yes, this has been one of my best years.

AL

Al

I have very much planned things for this New Year's Eve. This time it's going to be with family. It's going to be more or less like a house party. This year is definitely special because we have the title from Nach Baliye. So my family is all geared up and is looking forward for the celebration. Other than Nach Baliye there is one more reason for which we want to cherish each and every moment this New Year's as last time, something really bad had occurred in the family. Well, the New Year resolution is to concentrate even more on our careers and make it to the top!

Priyanka Bassi

Priyanka Bassi

Yes! I have decided to go to Lonavala with a bunch of friends. I am definitely excited about this New Year's Eve. This year has been extremely extraordinary. Bombay Talking is the first show I am doing and nothing could get better than this. I had also gone to Delhi after a gap of six to seven months and that was another good thing which happened this year. New Year Resolution? Oh well, work hard, and hard and hard. I have to improve a lot, and try and get more shows.

Tanaaz Lal (Currim)

Tanaaz Lal (Currim)

I am going to be doing a show in Hyderabad, so this year my New Year's will be celebrated in the Biryani city. This year, in its true sense has been a New Year for me. It is a completely new chapter. I am also doing a movie now, so it's extremely crucial. Apart from that I have realized so many things in terms of people, friends and loved ones. This year has played a very big role in making me realize my closest friends. Resolution! Yes, I have decided to be more disciplined. And other than that I have to workout more, which I sadly didn't this year.

Bobby Darling

Bobby Darling

I will celebrate my New Year in Ludhiana, as I will be doing a show there. This year has been really special as most of my films got National awards. I have got everything, fame, name and a lot of recognition and now I am looking out for a boyfriend. My new year resolution is to try and do different roles. I want do something different, like serious and art movies. I am bored of doing those gay roles.

Hussain

Hussain

I will be in Agra for a show. This year has been definitely very special as I got married. My New Year resolution is to work hard and get better. And I will try and spend time with my wife. I have to balance between my married life and my professional life.

Jobless in 2006?

Top television actors find themselves out of work when their serials go off air

Reena Thapar Kapoor

"Yes, I was worried about my future as I have a family to support, but quitting was my decision. There is no dearth of work, but good work is hard to find" - Kiran 'Om' Karmarkar

After ruling the roost as Om in Kahani Ghar…., Armaan in Jassi Jaisi… and Abhimanyu in Astitva, Kiran Karmarkar, Apoorva Agnihotri and Varun Badola will soon find themselves unemployed.

With the winding up of their serials and no offers coming their way, is the scenario making these actors insecure? "Absolutely not," asserts Badola, "It's better to end the show when it's still considered to be on the top. If an earth shattering show comes my way, it will be great, but if it doesn't I am not going to fret or fume. That phase will be a break and might go on a long holiday." Besides, Badola is likely to work on a project with his wife Rajeshwari Sachdev? "This isn't the right time to talk about the show. For all you know I might not do it at all."

So, there are no future assignments? "I'll not lie about getting great offers. In fact, the work that is being offered to me can't be compared to an Astitva or Koshish. If I take up a show, it will have to be a notch above the ones that I've done in the past. Thankfully, I'm in a position where I can pick and choose," says Badola.

A couple of months ago, Kiran Karmarkar of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki gave up fame, adulation and remuneration when he quit the show. Today, Karmarkar is not doing any serial but is quick to point out that this is a personal choice. "Quitting a show means a lot. One has to let go of a lot of aspects of a star's life and career," says Karmarkar. "I did feel insecure about my future after I quit Kahani... any actor who says otherwise is lying. I did miss my set, my show and above all my friends for a long time. But at no point did I regret my decision. Yes, I was worried about my future as I have a family to support. It was my decision to quit the show as I thought that I was stagnating. There is no dearth of work, but good work is hard to find."

Another actor who will face a similar fate is Apoorva Agnihotri. Jassi... going off air has raised a question on what Agnihotri will do in the future. When contacted, Agnihotri was unavailable for comment.

Made for each other

Peas in a pod
It takes two to tango

Love is mysterious. Sometimes we wonder how two opposites spend a lifetime together. They complain, hate, nag and demand. But also endure, forgive and love. Shaaditimes shook some known faces out of their relationship reverie to speak about their better half. Let us understand what keeps them together.

Ekta & Mohnish Behl

Two things you dislike in your spouse
Ekta He is a workaholic, which sometimes gets on my nerves.
Mohnish: I hate absolutely nothing about her.

Two things you love about your spouse
Ekta: His nature. He is a very understanding husband.
Mohnish: She is an excellent human being and looks stunning.

Two things that brought you together
Ekta: A crocin that he offered me on the set, that's how we started knowing each other. Ours was a love at first sight.
Mohnish: And our nature.

Two things you have in common
Ekta: Our daughter. We both have a good sense of humour.
Mohnish: Our daughter and the emotional and physical relationship we share.

Two things you both hate
Ekta: Untidiness and we both hate our daughter not doing well in her studies.
Mohnish: Dishonesty and untidiness.

Flashback 2005: By Gayatri Reddy

Even though they are meant to be disliked, these bad boys of television have proved to be a big hit. They are flamboyant and know how to have a good time. Here are the villains who we loved to hate this year.

Ansh (Akashdeep Sehgal) Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Ansh of Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is television's most famous baddie to date. Even though he is downright selfish and wicked, the guy gets full marks for not being a doormat to his reel life mother Tulsi.

Sasha (Chetan Hansraj) Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii
The only villain who had a girlfriend that reciprocated his feelings. Sasha knew how to have a good time with cool bikes, parties and 'I don't give a damn' attitude. The good news for the audience and his fans is that he is all set to retrurn to Kahaani soon.

Ashmit (Rahil Azam)
Yeh Meri Life Hai
This is the one guy who successfully gave us the creeps in Yeh Meri Life Hai. The very fact that he was the perfect husband was rather fishy, as perfection doesn't exist. An over possessive husband who threw acid on his previous wife to ensure nobody found her attractive deserved to be dumped by his holier than thou wife Pooja Sharma, the lead girl in YMLH.

Yudi (Manoj Bohra) Kasautii Zindagi Kay
The only one with a sense of humour in a serial where everyone is forever crying. The way he calls his mother 'Mother India' and her past and present husbands Jai and Veeru is hilarious. Unfortunately he doesn't look like he will stay negative for long as his goody-two-shoes mother Prerna is all set to convert him into the ideal son.

Hiten and Gauri

We've seen them shed tears and battle out some dramatic scenes. But can they dance? Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan are one couple we would definitely want to have on our wish list.

The reason is simple — their real-life chemistry is more real and interesting than what they portray on screen. If they can work as hard on matching their steps as they do as Karan-Nandini in Kyunki, they have a really good chance of winning.

Manav and Shweta

They initially agreed; but date problems kept them away. Manav Gohil and Shweta Kawaatra have made it clear that given a chance, they would love to do Nach Baliye.

Friends close to the couple say Manav is a terrific dancer. This should be an interesting jodi in the contest.

Bakhtyaar and Tanaaz

Don't be surprised if this couple ties the knot just in time before Nach Baliye 2 starts.

Bakhtyaar Irani and Tanaaz Currim are the newest telly couple in town, and getting them on the show will definitely be an attraction.

Not many know that Irani was part of Farah Khan's dance troupe, and should be able to provide some good competition to other contestants. As for Tanaaz, the lass is famous for her zeal and vigour in pursuing anything she sets her mind on.

Rajesh Kumar and Madhvi

One of the less talked-about couples, Momma's boy Roshesh (Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai) and his wife Madhvi are also in the run to take part in the contest.

After winning awards and praise for his performance as the hilarious Roshesh, Rajesh may soon be seen taking dance lessons.

The couple has already been heard talking about their excitement of being a part of the dance competition. Rajesh-Madhvi will definitely give Nach Baliye 2 the much-needed variety it needs.

Rajeev and Aamna

For a moment, let's forget about the constant on-off buzz surrounding this relationship. In spite of not being able to work together for quite a while, Rajeev Khandelwal and Aamna Shariff are still a couple that makes heads turn.

Those who have seen them perform live know Rajiv isn't a Govinda, but Aamna balances his two left feet with her grace and charm. Even though they aren't officially a couple, the Rajeev-Aamna pairing could be the biggest star attraction on the show.

Narayani and Gaurav

Another couple that has been sending mixed signals about their relationship.

However, since both have nothing much to do these days, Nach Baliye will not only provide the much-needed boost to their careers, but also give them an opportunity to put an end to the speculation surrounding their love life.

Narayani Shastri and Gaurav Chopra have the necessary oomph - can they dance?

Arjun and Gurdeep

Like Amit Sadh and Neeru Bajwa, Arjun Punjj and Gurdeep Kohli have been going around for quite some time, but have yet to walk to the altar.

Like some other couples, they too were approached to take part in the season one for the show, but were unable to join due to date hassles.

Also Arjun, was recently heard saying that he wouldn't like to be judged for his dancing by someone else. Going by this, it will be interesting to see if the couple makes it to the list, or is given the cold shoulder.

Mona and Karan

It would be a welcome change to watch Mona Singh give up the Jassi tag and indulge in mindless fun.

The actress has yet to go official about her chakkar with Karan Oberoi, but he may convince her to do that well in time for the launch.

If Mona needs anything after Jassi, then this is a good time; Nach Baliye's enthusiasm and energy will definitely do wonders for her.

Kiran and Rinku

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's Om was fed up of crying, so he quit.

But a better remedy for Kiran Karmarkar, who played the role, would be to be a part of Nach Baliye with wife Rinku.

It won't be a shocker if these two are invited and agree to be a part of the show.

Watching Kiran boogie-woogie would definitely be a welcome sight than watching him cry.

Hiten Paintal and Kishwar

These two seem like the perfect choice to round up the 10 contestants. They are young, energetic, famous and fit.

While Kishwar has been seen at many parties dancing and grooving, Hiten looks like he could take a page or two out of her book for lessons. Sources close to the couple point out that they could even emerge as the dark horse in the race.

Filmi couples we would like to see

Ajay Devgan and Kajol.
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena.
Randeep Hooda and Sushmita Sen.
Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna.
Ranvir Shourey and Konkona Sensharma.
Kelly Dorjee and Lara Dutta.
John Abraham and Bipasha Basu.
Dharmendra and Hema Malini.
Rajesh Khanna and Dimple.
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.

"Serials are my bread n butter, but theatre's my sweet dish"

Jayati Bhatia's claim to fame was Kanyadaan on Sony where she played the central character (Kavita) and later was seen as Bindiya on Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi as Jassi's confidante. This theatre actor was introduced to TV by none other than Ekta Kapoor way back in 1997 and from then on there has been no looking back for this hotpot of talent, who's almost completed a decade in the industry.

Kavita Shyam caught up with Jayati Bhatia for a heart to heart chat.

How did you venture into this profession?
I was into theatre while studying in Delhi besides, I was an Odissi dancer and recepient of the National scholarship from the Ministry of Culture for three years in a row. I joined theatre under Ibrahim Alkazi and came to Mumbai in 1997 and got into television.

And how did television happen to you?
I got Itihaas which was my first serial and the character I played (Vandana) went from being positive to a negative person. Followed by Kanyadaan which was a brilliant role with me being the central character in the show, to the extent that I got every family in the country wanting a daughter like Kavita in the show.
Simultaneously, I also did Tu Tu Main Main where I played (Kumud) a comic role and had a wonderful experience working with Sachin and Supriya who are extremely talented. Then Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin happened where Bindiya became a rage along with the show. The nerdy character who had an expert comment to give to the whole world was someone we could find in every office! I did Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii where I played Dr Shweta, which was a negative character.
Somewhere in between, I did Kutumb where I learnt that one should not take up any role without getting to know the details of it. I was a supporting cast with nothing much to do.

Tell us about your association with the Balaji family?
Ekta and Shobha aunty have introduced me to television and what I am today is because of Balaji. I met Ekta when I came to Mumbai and thankfully she knew Alkazi with whom I had done theatre in Delhi; besides Shobha aunty saw my scenes and increased my role as she thought I was extremely talented. So somehow I got things at the right time and everything fell into place!

What made you take up Celebrity Fame Gurukul?
Honestly, I am not 'besuri' and I think I have a good ear to pick up rhythm and melody but had no ability to sing. Besides it was all in the name of charity and I got a platform to sing and perform. For me, serials are my bread and butter but theatre's my sweet dish!

Tell us about your experiences on stage?
I did Katiya Bai of Karmali Terrace by Alyque Padamse which is loosely based on Padamse's mother's life who was suffering from Alzheimer's. I got to play all age groups from 12 to 70 year olds, The show was held at Prithvi film festival last year while Vagina Monologues (Mahabanoo Mody's play) has been an amazing experience and has been well received in Delhi, Pune and Mumbai. My husband cried when we he read the literature of the Monologues and encouraged me to take up the role besides Mahabanoo had come to me at a time when all the actors had rejected it as was too bold a subject. I have worked with Rahul Dacunha, Feroz Khan, Vikram Kapadia, Alyque Padamse and now Mahabanoo too.

How did you adjust to life in Mumbai coming from Delhi?
My husband (Kiran Bhatia, Executive Producer) pushed me to come to Mumbai. I met my husband when I was working in a play in Delhi and that is when I realized I could become an actor. I had my husband who fully supported me in every step of my life, besides both of us are workaholics.

What else is in the pipleline for you?
I am doing Sinndoor where I play Titli Mami, a very Punjabi character who keeps saying 'Death hee ho jayegi' and she keeps making devious plans but makes an ass of herself in the process. I am also doing Viraasat (Star Plus' forthcoming show) where I play Aman Verma and Rohit Roy's mother. This is the kind of role that gives me a kick, wherein some find her negative, some adamant and many find her loving.

Now I am looking forward to doing challenging films and completely negative characters which go beyond rolling the eyes and making faces or simply crying.

Shruti Agarwal of Kahani... gets new job from Ekta

< = =text/>
Tina Parekh

Tina Parakh's date calendar is completely marked. After keeping a low profile for a considerable amount of time, she is all set to fly high and will soon appear in Kasautii Zindagi Kay as Mukti. Parakh started her career with the rib-tickling show Khichdi. In a few months, she got noticed by Ekta Kapoor, who gave her a big break in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. She played Shruti for almost two years and did little else. To that she says, "That was a conscious decision. I didn't want to take up more work. I was happy the way things were moving."

However, now things have changed and Parakh feels it's about time that she took her career seriously. That's exactly why she jumped with excitement when Balaji offered her the role of Mukti in Kasauti Zindagi Kay. "The entire deal worked out in a span of four days. I was told that Ekta wanted me to do this particular role. At that point, I was also ready to take up more work."

Parakh is looking forward to being a part of Kasautii... We quiz her about her character in the show and she says, "I'm told that Mukti will be Rishabh Bajaj's driver's daughter who will fall for Prem. Obviously, it won't be an instantaneous love story. After loads of drama, he will come around and realise her importance in his life."

Tina says that her look in the show will be very basic. "Mukti is your average jeans and T-shirt kind of a girl, with great self-confidence and self-respect. It's very me." Well, that's not all. Tina has also bagged a great role in Star One's upcoming show, Darna Mana Hai. "I'm doing the third story of the show." What's really exciting about her role and the Darna… episode is that it's directed by Hriday 'Plan' Shetty. "When I first heard the story, I was quite kicked about it. As I started shooting for it I also learnt a lot of technicalities about acting and filming. Being a film director Hriday knew his job very well. That made things a lot easier for me." As for her disappearing act from Kahani… she says, "I'm very much a part of it."

Tina assures that her character is being worked upon and will be back with a bang. The actress starts shooting for Kasautii… tomorrow. "I've been a lazy bum for so many years. Now I want to concentrate and enjoy my work. I'm ready to shoulder the responsibility of shooting for three daily soaps. I hope I do justice to it."

• I've been a lazy bum for so many years. Now I want to concentrate and enjoy my work

"I don't feel helpless anymore"

There are times in all our lives, when we desire the need for divine intervention; times, when life refuses to acknowledge the seemingly obvious and decides to take refuge in a world that is far away from ours. A world that gives the body and mind the spiritual healing that it yearns for. We, at Telly Chakkar.com decided to delve deeper into the lives of our favourite stars and know a little about their lives beyond the obvious.

Tisca Chopra turned into a satisfied and happier soul ever since she got into Buddhism eight years ago. The elegant lady, who is related to literateur Khushwant Singh gets into a somber mood while talking to us about her association with Buddhism, post which life took a U turn for her. Tisca started her career with some forgettable films and then got into plays, but not long ago got back to television with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and is now seen in Zee's Sarrkkar as Urvashi.

Kavita Shyam talks to Tisca about her beliefs.

"I believe in human beings"
I don't believe in God but I believe that each human being has something good to offer and I get satisfaction out of others' happiness. I don't believe in a particular God as such.

"I had a lot of questions which were unanswered"
I was feeling helpless at one point in my life and did not know which way to turn. I was not getting what I thought I deserved. I felt very lonely even in a crowd and I don't know if it was to do with me staying away from my family. A family friend of ours (Asha) came into my life at the right time, eight years ago and guided me into the right direction by introducing me to Buddhism. She has been a great source of inspiration in my life. Also Dr Daisaku Ikada who lives in Japan is my Guru.

"Buddhism is a way of life for me now"
I chant every day and Buddhism has changed my life manifold. I can safely say I have a great life now and feel empowered. I truly believe in good actions and thoughts. I believe in the cause and effect theory as it decides our destiny. Being compassionate is another thing that I have learnt from Buddhism. My health has improved and I have learnt to be kind and patient, besides my relations have deepened and most importantly, I have stopped feeling helpless.

"I have taught Buddhism to many people I know and happy to see their lives moving"
My husband is also into Buddhism and we both practise it religiously. I got my close friends and colleagues into practicing the same. Shweta Kawatra, Manav Gohil and Vinay Jain are a few of my colleagues whom I have introduced to

Buddhism and it gives me immense satisfaction in seeing them happy with their lives.

"I have been on a pilgrimage but my mannat did not come true"
I don't fast except for dieting purposes and I had been to Vaishno Devi where I walked up to the temple barefoot, but my mannat did not come true.

"I am a philosophical person and write a lot"
I am a philosophical person as I try to think and get deeper meanings to all my actions and thoughts. I write about anything and everything which catches my fancy. I maintain a diary and put my thoughts to paper as and when I can. I write short stories, opinions and am looking for an outlet wherein I can start putting out my writings.
