A Trip to Remember

When morning came and it was time to leave for their trip, the chaos filling the Kanitkar house was very typical, especially with their new bombastic addition of one Mrs. Apurva Vartak Kanitkar. But the chaos residing in the heart and mind of Mr. Shashank Kanitkar was unknown to everyone but himself. As the family ran around grabbing the last minute things and double-checking that everyone had double-checked their packing, Shashank was detached to the chaos, owing to his tormenting thoughts from yesterday.

But the rest of the family was too busy among themselves to pay him attention at the moment. Mai kept trying to sneak in half the kitchen into the bus, claiming that someone or other will get hungry and they absolutely must have the ingredients to make food whenever needed. Vittu Baba was also trying to bring his torture device on the trip so that he can entertain everyone throughout the 6 hour drive and of course for the entirety of the 2 day picnic. Sua Aai and Panna were trying to convince Mai that they had enough food while Kukki gang was trying to dissuade VB of his plans so that they could have peace for the 2 days! Appu was just standing on the side enjoying this new atmosphere that she never really got to experience before when DK comes there assuming that everyone is ready but when he sees the situation, he of course blows!

DK: Ye kya hai? Tum log abhi tak bus mein nahin baithi ho? Aur yeh kya hai Vittu? Tum vaha par bhi gaane wali ho? Arey 2 din keliye toh hamare kaan ko shaanti do!! Vapas rakko isse!

Mai: Shuru hogaya inka! Chillao mat! Sab tayyar hai, Babi aur Bhaskar bhi aate honge, bas kuch khaana rakhna hai aur phir chalte hai.

DK: Itna saara khaana! Issliye, Issliye meine kaha hum log public bus mein chalte hai taki sab bas thodi thodi saman laye, par tum log meri sunti kaha ho! Private bus book karvayi mujhse! Paisa kya jhadad lagtat!?

As usual, DK was doing kanjoosi and wanted all the Kanitkars, Darekars, Vartaks and the Vaidyas to travel the whole 6 hours to the village by multiple public buses so that they can save money. But of course, with some push from the rest of the family, Appu trapped DK in a barrage of words about how traveling in one bus altogether would be cheaper than renting cars or traveling in separate public transport and so DK had no choice but to call Chintya up to arrange for a private bus for the duration of the trip.

After much more discussions (and arguments between DK & Mai), everyone was finally boarded onto the bus and ready to start their trip. After a few minutes, the gang noticed that Appu was upset since her dad and Atti couldn’t join them, thanks to Netra’s interference. To cheer her up, they decided that the family would take a break in their journey somewhere midway and set up an impromptu picnic lunch for a couple hours.

When they stopped at their picnic spot, everyone was ready to be out in the fresh air and quickly set up mats and stools to sit on and started passing out the packed food. Appu started to forget about Netra and began to enjoy with the gang, and even Ovi, as they played silly games. But among all this, Shashank was not interfering at all, neither to join them nor to stop them at any point. The only one to notice this was Babi Atya, who saw him standing under a tree, away from everyone, and looking towards Appu constantly.

Babi: Shashank, kya hua? Tum ese akele kyu khadi ho? Kya soch rahi ho?

Shashank: Nahin Atya, kuch nahin.

Babi: Acha, apni bayko ko pyaar se taad rahi ho? No problem, continue karo!

Shashank: Atya, kya kuch bhi.

Babi: Are Shashank, tumhari bayko hai! Tumhare paas license hai usse pyaar se dekhne keliye.

Shashank just blushes as Babi laughs at him and pats his shoulder. She is about to leave when he stops her.

Shashank: Atya, mein aap se kuch puch sakthi hu? Matlab thoda personal hai.

Babi: No problem. Tume help karega toh koi bhi personal sawal chalega. Kya baat hai?

Shashank: Aap Bhaskar Kaka se pyaar karti hu na? Toh aapne unpe trust kyu nahin kiya? Matlab jab voh 10 saal pehle US gayi thi, tab bhi aapne unke mooh se explanation sune ki wait nahin kiya, baaki sab ne jo kaha usse sach maan liya. Jab voh vapas aayi tab bhi unki koi baat nahin sunna chathi thi. Aur jab voh shaadi mein se ese chale gaya tab bhi nahin. I mean aap pyaar karte ho na Kaka se, aur voh bhi itni saalon ka pyaar hai, toh bharosa kyu nahin tha aapko unpar. Aur jab bharosa hi nahin hai toh pyaar kesa?

Babi is stunned listening to barrage of questions from Shashank as they pulled her into the most painful memories of her life.

Shashank: Atya, I’m sorry. Mujhe aapko ese upset nahin karna tha par main ye sawaal aur kisise nahin karsaktha.

Babi: Shashank, tum ye sab abhi kyu puch rahi ho?

Shashank: Please Atya, mujhe bataye. Iss waqt mujhe mera confusion dur karne mein sirf aap help karsakthe hai.

Babi: Ok fine. Mujhe Bhaskar par poora bharosa hai Shashank. Pehle bhi tha aur abhi bhi hai. Lekin kabhi kabhi humara darr bharosa pe bhari pad jata hai. Jab Bhaskar US gaya tha, toh sab log yehi bolne lagi ki usne tumare paise aur madad se gaya aur tume piche chod diya. Aur phir baaki problems ki vajah se mein bhi manne lagi thi, par shayad pure dil se nahin, issliye toh itni saalon ke baad bhi main kabhi move on nahin karpayi. Jab voh vapas aaya na, toh dar laga ki kahi mai phirse hurt na ho. Aur rehi baat shaadi ki waqt ka, toh vaha par problem Deepali thi. Mujhe esa laga ki Bhaskar ki life mein, meri jagah Deepali le already leliya aur mujhe unke beech mein nahin aana tha, especially not at the cost of my self-respect. Mujhe Bhaskar pe bahut bharosa hai Shashank, kabhi kabhi darr ki wajah ya misunderstandings ki wajah se meine uspe doubt karne ki galti ki, lekin iska matlab ye nahin ki mera pyaar kam hogaya.

Babi stays quiet for a moment and just watches Shashank as he stands thinking with almost guilty look on his face. As she continues to observe him stealing glances at Appu in between his thoughts, Babi understood that Shashank made some mistake regarding Appu.

Babi: Shashank, mein koi love expert nahin hu par mere liye husband and wife ki pyaar ki levels bahut simple hai. Jab kissiki positive side dekhe acche lage, toh hum usse pasand karne lagte hai. Jab kissiki flaws bhi hame manzoor hote hai, hum usse pyaar karne lagte hai. Lekin saccha pyaar, jo har muskhil ko harne wala ho, jo kabhi dono ko ek durse se door na jaane de aur baand ke rakhe, voh sirf tab hota hai jab pyaar ke saath saath, rishte main trust aur respect bhi hota hai.

She stops speaking to observe Shashank thinking about her words with a saddened face.

Babi: Tumhara pyaar konsa wala hai Shashank? Ye tume decide karna hai. Lekin kuch bhi ho, rishte tabhi tikk the hai jab usme honesty bhi ho. Agar samne wale se tume dukh hua, toh bata do, warna voh pain dheere dheere gusse mein badal jayega aur rishte ko kharab karega. Agar tumse koi galti hui, toh confess kardo, warna tum andar hi andar guilt mein rahogi aur tume pata bhi nahin chalega kab tum apni pyaar se dur gayi. Ha, galti kabool karne se problems hongi. But that’s the real test of your relationship. Jab tum ek saath unn problems ko solve karke aage badogi, ek stronger relationship mein.

Babi left Shashank to his thoughts as the family slowly packed up to continue their journey. He tried to behave as normal as possible with Appu but Babi Atya’s words kept repeating in his mind during the journey. Appu was so excited to be enjoying with her gang that she barely noticed Shashank’s quietness and just thought that it was his usual serious nature.

As they reached their temporary home, Appu was running around excited, clicking pictures of all the simple things around her, from the kids playing in the streets to the farm animals she could see in couple houses, and even the rich farmlands that she could see as far as her eyes would let her.

The family was throughly enjoying Appu’s happiness at the novelty of the experience, but after a good while, finally managed to drag her in to freshen up and rest. Once refreshed, the ladies started cooking together in the old style kitchen. The caretaker of the rental house has kept the kitchen stocked with the groceries as dictated by the family prior to arrival. But it was still an old style kitchen so they had to make food on a very simple single stove and the remaining in the little firepit ready with sticks to be lit. Appu tried to help the ladies but only ended up making them laugh at all her questions and confusions.

Once everyone had settled in and had dinner together, they began to set their sleeping arrangements. Cotton mattresses were laid down on the floor in each hall, one beside another until there was enough for all. But everyone’s main concern was for Appu. She was looking very excited to be experiencing something new but they all knew that listening about it and actually adjusting to it are very different things, especially for a girl like her who was always used to all the luxuries money could provide her.

The gang tried to make her as comfortable as possible. Before Shashank could even interfere or do something, they set up an extra mattress on top of Appu’s already laid down one to try and make it softer. They made sure to give her one of the softer blankets they had and gave her extra pillow to use as her replacement teddy. They even put her closer to the windows so that she could get the cooler breeze and made sure that a net was firmly in place around her bed to protect her from the mosquitos. Appu was loving the extra care that they were showing towards her and the family was proud of the gang members as well. However, they were still the Kukki Gang and had to stay true to their nature. So as they comforted Appu, they couldn’t help passing teasing remarks to Shashank about if he would be ok to sleep today or if he needed an extra pillow to hold while sleeping instead.

Tired from the journey, the events of the past few days, and of course the pooja early morning the next day, everyone gradually slept off very quickly. Appu too was tired from the excitement and quickly fell asleep but without her usual partner, she couldn’t stay asleep for more than two hours. She almost decided to go to the men’s room to talk to Shashank but then remembered his words and the instructions from the ladies that she would have to be a little more reserved while they were here. Appu tossed and turned for a while to try to sleep but gave up after sometime and decided to go onto the terrace instead for some fresh air, only to run into the one person that she wanted to see at the moment. Shashank was standing at the edge of the terrace, arms resting on the wall, staring off into space and so lost in thoughts that he didn’t even hear Appu call him until she was screaming in his ear.

Appu: KHADUS! Kaha kho gayi?

Shashank: Apurva? Tum yeha kya kar rahi ho?

Appu: Voh mujhe need nahin aa rahi thi.

Shashank, with a sad smile: Teddy ko miss kar rahi thi?

Appu: Nahin toh! Of course not! Bas ye jaga nayi hai na, issliye thoda problem laga.

Shashank continues to look at her with a sad smile, thinking about how honest Appu is. His guilt at unnecessarily doubting her was only increasing more and he knew that if he doesn’t voice it out, the guilt will eat him alive soon. He knew that he was risking everything by confessing his mistake as he believed Apurva can do anything from screaming her lungs off at him to leaving to her Baba’s house immediately, and that would be if she didn’t include the family into it. But he also knew that he has to own up to his mistakes so with after gathering a lot of courage, he decided to be truthful.

Shashank: Apurva, mujhe tumse kuch zaroori baat karni hai. Sunogi?

He takes her by her hands and makes her sit on one of the khats on the terrace as he sits beside her.

Shashank: Voh, mujhe nahin pata tum kese react karogi, par mujhse galti hui hai so tum mujhe jo bhi punishment dogi, mujhe manzoor hai. Mein bas itna chathi hu ki tum kuch bhi karne ya kehne se pehle meri puri baat sunlo.

Appu: Are Khadus, kya hua hai? Tum itna suspense kyu bada rahi ho? Saaf saaf kaho na jo bhi hai.

Shashank: Voh….jab Netra stairs se giri thi na, toh maine dekha ki tum uski taraf bahut gusse mein dekh rahi thi—

Appu: Khadus! Tume abhi Netra Tai ke baare mein baat karna hai, iss waqt?

Shashank: Nahin, baat Netra ki nahin hai. Matlab Netra se related hai but it’s about us.

Appu: Tum kya bol rahi ho mujhe kuch samaj mein nahin aa rahi hai. Ek minute, kahi tumhari ladli assistant ne tumse complaint toh nahin kiya na mere baare mein?

Shashank: Complaint? Netra tumhare baare kya complaint karegi?

Appu: Yes! Maine uski jhooth ko pakda tha na, issliye. Matlab jab mein humare room mein gayi thi, toh meine dekha ki Netra Tai ki pair toh bilkul ok hai. Voh acchese humare poore room ki chakkar kat rahi thi. Issliye meine unse kaha, ki agar voh thik hai toh humare room se chale jaye. Par voh na jaane ki zidd kar rahi thi, toh maine unpe chillayi aur saare gharwaalon ko vaha par bulane ki dhamki dhi, tab voh chup chap chalegayi. Ab gar is matter keliye tum mujhe chillane wali ho na Khadus, toh mein bilkul tolerate nahin karungi ha!

Shashank was drowning in even more guilt as he heard Appu’s version of events and now understood the reason behind her angry stares later on.

Shashank: Nahin mein tumpe nahin chillane wali hu. Toh issliye tum uss waqt naraaz lag rahi thi, kyunki tume laga ki Netra phirse stairs pe girke chot kane ki acting kar rahi thi.

Appu: Of course! Pehle toh mujhe doubt hua ki Netra Tai phirse acting kar rahi hai aur mein sab ko batane bhi wali thi par Baba ne kaha fracture and all, toh mein chup ho gayi.

Shashank: Lekin meine tume galat samjha. I’m sorry Apurva. Meine tume bahut galat samjha. Jab Netra keh rahi thi ki usse laga kisine usse dhakka diya, toh meine dekha tum uspar kitni gusse se dekh rahi thi aur ek pal keliye mujhe doubt hua.

Appu: Tume doubt hua? Kesa doubt? Ki meine Netra Tai ko dhakka diya right?

Shashank, hanging his head down: I’m sorry Apurva. Mujhse galti hogayi. Mein—

Appu: Nahin, tum sorry kyu bol rahi ho? Yeh toh tum hamesha karti ho right? Meri baat sunne se pehle mere baare mein sab kuch soch leti ho aur phir sorry bolti ho, haina? Lekin ye sochna ki mein wantedly kisko hurt karsakthi hu aur voh bhi apni behen ko? Wow Khadus! Thank you so much!

Appu leaves from there in anger and hurt, as Shashank tries to stop her and apologize again. She goes back to her bed, but starts to cry to herself remembering all the times that Shashank yelled at her and all the words that Netra always taunted her with. All the taunts and all the moments she’s seen of Netra with Shashank start running through her mind as she cries herself to sleep. On the other hand, Shashank was still on the terrace, falling deeper into the pit that he dug himself into, as the guilt and the pain of not trusting Appu ate at him the entire night.

I hate this!!! I loved Amrutha as Mansi. She brought Mansi to life and as the lovable Kukki gang member. Actress gone so I guess the hope is the character is not ruined. 😞

Maybe you’re right, she may look better with Amey I guess but I hope she doesn’t butcher the character 😞

Jolly's prediction really is nightmarish but it is very unlikely to happen so I don't think we have got anything to be worried about. For once, this can be the Kukki gang's dream but not Netra’s. Though I don't mind feeling guilty for seeking a sadistic pleasure if she indeed does witness such nightmares every night after she crosses the line with Mr. and Mrs. Kanitkar. 😆
