Neither of them slept well the entire night. They kept drifting into sleep out of tiredness but the dreams full of pain wouldn’t let them rest. As the house started to wake up, everyone noticed that they were both silent and tired from lack of sleep but assumed it to be because of their changed sleeping positions and laughed to themselves.

Shashank was observing Appu silently getting ready to go to the temple and listening to all the instructions that the ladies were giving her. But the excitement and joy was clearly missing on her face and the enthusiasm she had before, to be performing such a ritual with her husband, was gone and replaced by pain and anger that was hidden from the others behind a mask of fake smiles and yawns. Looking at how much he had hurt her, he knew that he couldn’t let her go through with the pooja before he apologized. But Appu avoided him at every turn, running behind the ladies and asking them question after question and pretending to be her usual self.

Once everything was ready, they had left to the temple and thankfully, his mother gave him a chance to speak to Appu when she told both of them to go feed one of the temple’s Nandis before coming up for the pooja. Appu agreed and quietly left with Shashank to do as she was told and once they were alone with only the animals, Shashank decided to speak.

Shashank: Apurva, I’m sorry. Please ek baar meri baat sunlo. Janta hu ki meine tume bahut hurt kiya aur isme sirf meri galti hai. Please ese sad mat raho.

Appu: Toh kya karu? Nachu? Kis baat pe? Tumne bina mujhse koi sawaal kiye ya bina mujhse kuch bhi puche, mujhpe doubt kiya issliye? Ya phir issliye nachu ki tume lagta hai ki main itni buri hu, jo kisiko ese hurt karne ki koshish bhi karsakthi hu? Dekho Khad- sorry Shashank, iss waqt sab log khush hai ki Babi Atya ki life finally set hogayi. Aur mujhe iss khushi ko hamare wajah se spoil nahin karna hai so please. Aur aaj pooja sirf hum dono ki nahin hai, Babi Atya aur Bhaskar Kaka, aur Nikhil Dada aur Sumi ka bhi hai na. Tume mujhpar trust nahin hai na so ye pooja humare liye kuch nahin lagti par unke liye bahut important hai so please, shanti se pooja khatam karte hai aur uske baad tume mujhe jo samajna hai samjho. I don’t care.

Appu leaves angrily from there towards the family as Shashank stood there with shock and pain written across his face and eyes starting to water. He realized the full extent of pain he gave her this time as she actually resorted to calling him by his name instead. Gathering himself, he followed Appu towards the rest of the family.

Sua Aai doesn’t see Shashank standing behind Appu and asks her where he is.

Appu: Voh Khad- I mean, Shashank aata hi hoga. Usse koi important call aaya tha. Hum log tab tak pooja shuru karte hai na.

Everyone was even more surprised to hear Appu calling him by his name and the ladies started to think that maybe Appu was softening a little.

Kukki: Shashank? Appu tum kabse usse Shashank bolne lagi? Sab thik hai na?

Appu: Of course Kukki. Voh aap sab ne kaha na ki hum yeha village mein hai aur yeha par thoda dhyan se rehna hoga and all, issliye.

They would have believed her words if they haven’t taken one close look at her face and seen the tears that she was trying to hide. The elders were about to yell for Shashank to find out what happened when they saw him standing behind, pain and guilt clearly written across his face. Before anyone could say anything, Babi intervened and diverted Appu by instructing her on what to do for the pooja and called Shashank to come sit with his wife. She quietly signaled to everyone to not say anything and pretend to be normal.

Without any drama, the pooja was successfully completed, even though Appu was getting tired in between. Everyone could see that she was uncomfortable from the saree and the heat but Appu didn’t complain at all, just bearing it all quietly and for once, they found themselves wishing to hear another of her silly tantrums instead. After the pooja was done and blessings were given all around, they left home to change.

Now that they knew something was wrong, the tension between Appu and Shashank was more palpable to everyone. Kukki gang tried to involve them in games and paired them together but Appu wasn’t having any of it so they gave up. After lunch, they decided to go roaming around the village to cheer up Appu. The whole family went out to cool down by the river, playing in the water and swinging on the swings tied to the branches hanging over the water. They took Appu on tractor rides in the fields and had her roam around the village on the carts pulled by Oxen. Despite the gentle scoldings of the elders, the gang made sure that Appu ate all the food that could only be found in such small street-side village shops and had her try some of the ice cream cones as well. Even amidst all this, they tried to push Shashank and Appu together as much as possible but gave up when Appu kept ignoring him and he just stared after her with a pained face. But thankfully, the excursion worked to make Appu smile and laugh for a while.

They went back home to cook dinner and pack up for their return trip the next day. Once again, everyone slept off quickly, tired from waking so early and the events of the day but Shashank was still restless and lost in his thoughts. After much tossing, he finally gave up and left towards the terrace for some peace, only to find Appu standing there much like he was the previous night. He hesitated to disturb her again and almost left but decided that he couldn’t let this continue much longer. If for no reason other than the fact that he couldn’t stand to see her hurting like this. He softly calls her name and as she sees him, Appu tries to leave again.

Shashank stops her holding her hand: Apurva, please kuch kaho. Mujhpe jitna chillana hai chillao. Kuch bhi karo, main kuch nahin bolungi. But please mujhse baat toh karo. Tume ese chup chap rehna mujhse dekha nahin jayega.

Appu: Kyu? Tum hamesha complain karti hu na? Ki main bahut shor machati hu, bahut zyaada bolti hu, kabhi serious nahin rehta and all? Toh lo ab serious ho gayi hu. Abh isse bhi problem hai tume Khadus? Oh sorry, Shashank!

Shashank: Apurva, please!!! Esa mat karo, I’m sorry, I’m very sorry. I know meri galti thi. Mujhe tumare baare mein esa nahin sochna chayye tha. Lekin please tum ese baat mat karo. Mujhe tum ese Shashank kyu bula rahi ho?

Appu: Kyu? Voh tumhara naam hai na? Oh I’m sorry, ye right toh sirf tumhari ladli assistant ke pass hai, right? Sirf Netra Tai tume ese pyaar se Shashank sir bula sakthi hai. Aur tume toh sabse zyaada unpe bharosa hota hai, mujh par toh kabhi nahin hota!

Shashank gets frustrated at hearing about Netra again but swallows his irritation since he knows that he is responsible for her anger this time. He gently leads Appu to sit on the khat and kneels down in front of her.

Shashank: I know tumhara gussa bilkul justified hai. Aur meine jo kiya voh bilkul galat tha. Mein jaanta hu ki tum hamesha sab ke baare mein sochti hu par mein yeh bhi jaanta hu ki tume Netra bilkul bhi pasand nahin hai. And that’s ok. Tum galat nahin ho. Voh hamesha Sarika Atya ki insult karti hai aur tumse bhi bahut buri tarah se behave karti hai toh I understand. Lekin jiss Apurva ko mein jaanta hu, voh ek second keliye bhi kisiko dard mein nahin dekh sakthi hai. Aur uss Apurva ko apni behen ki takleef pe bhi yese uninterested dekha toh mujhe kuch samaj nahin aaya. Aur phir Netra ki baaton par tumne esa react kiya ki mein ek pal keliey bahut galat socha. Ek pal keliye hi sahi par meine bahut galat socha tumhare baarein mein. I’m sorry Apurva. Please mujhe ek chance dedo. I promise mein esi galti phir kabhi nahin karungi. I’m very sorry!

Hearing his explanation, Appu has some tears swimming in her ears but she doesn’t say anything, even as he stays kneeling in front of her, holding his ears and apologizing again and again. Seeing Appu not replying to him but not leaving either, he decides to take the chance and clear somethings from his side.

Shashank: Aur tumne galat kaha ki mujhe Netra par sabse zyaada bharosa hota hai. That’s not true. Netra se zyaada mujhe tum par bharosa hai aur hamesha rahega. Bas do second keliye mera dimaag kaam karna band hogaya, lekin ese phir kabhi nahin hoga. Aur mujhe ye serious wali Apurva Vartak bilkul bhi pasand nahin hai. Tum hamesha smile karte hue acchi lagti ho. Ye jo pura din ese calm aur quiet Apurva tha na, ye kisiko pasand nahin aaya. The Apurva Vartak hamesha masti karte hue, shor machate hue acchi lagti hai. Galti meine kiya na, toh saaza tum mujhe do! Apne aap ko kyu de rahi ho?

Appu starts to slowly melt, her pain and anger slowly subsiding from his words, but she refuses to let him see it. Shashank could see the tension leaving her body a little bit and continues his apology again, promising her to never repeat such a mistake. Seeing that she is still angry, he decides to change his method of apology and starts doing sit-ups holding his ears, with an “I’m sorry” tagged onto each one!

Appu enjoys his antics and starts to slowly smile but doesn’t relent yet. After he does about 10 repetitions, she stops him.

Appu: Ok, iss bar maaf kiya. Lekin agar phirse esa hua, toh mein tume bilkul bhi maaf nahin karungi. Immediately Baba ke ghar chale jaungi, hamesha keliye.

Shashank wipes her tears and promises her: Kabhi nahin karungi, I promise. And I’m very sorry! Please rona band karo!

Appu smiles softy: Apology accepted!

Shashank: Toh iska matlab tum mujhe phirse Khadus bulaogi right?

Appu: Kyu? Mein tume Shashank nahin bula saktha kya?

Shashank: Nahin bula sakthi ho. Par mujhe tumhare mooh se Khadus sunne ki aadat hogayi hai. Toh jab Shashank sunti ho toh bahut ajeeb lagta hai.

Appu smiles hearing his reasoning but before she can say anything, a big yawn interrupts her.

Shashank: Bahut neend aa rahi hai na? Meri wajah se kal raat bhi nahin so payi tum! Jao, jaake kar so jaao. Kal hume travel bhi toh karna hai.

Appu: Mujhe vaha neend nahin aayegi. She thinks for a while and decides to use the situation to her advantage. Khadus, tumne galti kiya toh punishment bhi toh mila chayye right? Toh tumhare punishment ye hai ki tum aaj raat mere saath yeha terrace par sogi!

Shashank smiles seeing her innocence and berates himself once more. He knows that she can’t sleep without her teddy anymore, and after all the trouble he caused, decides to silently comply with her. He tells her to wait for a bit and goes downstairs to silently collect his pillow and blankets. When he comes back, he sees Appu almost falling asleep where she was sitting and chuckles to himself.

After much maneuvering, he manages to spread a blanket on the khat and lays down, pulling Appu into his arms as she laid her head on his chest and covers them both with another blanket. It was a testament to how exhausted she felt that Appu slept off immediately after telling him to remove his glasses, but Shashank lay awake for a little longer thinking to himself.

I’m sorry Apurva. I know tumne mujhe maaf kiya par ye galti keliye, mein apne aap ko itni jaldi maaf nahin karungi. Isse yaad rakhungi so that ye kabhi repeat na karu. Kyunki mujhe tumhara gussa bhi chalega, par tume ese sad dekhna ya phir tumse baat naa karna bilkul bhi tolerate nahin karsaktha. Aur mujhe tumhare mooh se ese gussa mein Shashank kabhi nahin sunna. Jab tum mujhe Khadus bulati ho, mujhe accha lagta hai. I promise, aage se mein esi galti nahin karungi. Thank you for forgiving me.

He gently pats her head and places a soft kiss on the back of her hand before peacefully dozing off himself.

Next day morning:

After 3 days of disturbed nights, Shashank was lost to the world sleeping peacefully with his wife in his arms. He was so lost that he didn’t even wake up to all the laughs and giggles around him for a while. But once he did, he desperately wished that it was just a nightmare because he knew the teasing session that would follow as the whole family was standing around him.

Nikhil controls his laughter and steps forward: Kya baat hai saale saab? Aap yeha kya kar rahi ho? Neeche hum sab ke saath neend nahin aayi kya?

Amey: Arey kese neend ayega? Uski partner uske saath nahin thi right? Tum bhi na Kukki, ye picnic breakfast ka plan kahi aur nahin bana saktha tha? I mean terrace pe sab saath mein breakfast karne ka plan bahut acha tha, par lagta hai yeha hum kisika private moment disturb kar rahe hai.

Shashank was trying to make the bed swallow him whole but decided that this was just another punishment from the powers above that he couldn’t escape from: Amey Da, esa kuch nahin hai. Voh mujhe neeche garmi lag rahi thi toh mein terrace pe aayi aur phir Apurva bhi yehi aagayi toh hum log baat karte karte kab so gayi pata bhi nahi chala.

Everyone continued to giggle to themselves listening to his excuses.

Shashank: Acha, aap log breakfast ki baat kar rahi thi right? Mein abhi fresh hokar aata hu!

Shashank tries to dislodge himself from Appu’s grip to leave but Appu yells at him, still lost to the chaos around her in her peaceful sleep: Khadus, mujhe sone do. Tumhari vajah se mein do din se nahin soyi! Mujhe meri teddy chayye!

A thoroughly embarrassed Shashank pulls himself free and runs away and Appu wakes up to see the entire family holding each other up as they laughed their hearts out! Appu’s innocent confusion just made them laugh even more but there was also great relief and peace behind their laughter seeing that their favorite couple was back to normal, for now at least!

I love sleeping on the terrace, esp when I go visit my extended families in the villages...it has such an amazing breeze and peace that no amount of central AC can provide. ❤️
