Chapter 3 : The end is near, and happiness is approaching

After having breakfast with Gungun, Anubav went to the lawyer recommended by an acquaintance.

The interview went very well, he thought he would have more trouble, but he hoped that Akriti would sign the papers without making a fuss.

He went to work and spent the day in a very good mood, but when evening came, he lost his smile. He had a big battle ahead of him, but he was determined to get what he wanted: the annulment of his marriage to Akriti and the validity of his marriage to Gungun.

BP was the first to see him return, his face was sad, but at the same time angry. He would never understand this man. He is the oldest in the family, when you say old you think of wisdom, but he sees no wisdom in his actions...

He loves his family, but this love should not become a burden, his duties and responsibilities towards them should not become a string around his neck.

He was going to take his blessings, and so was his father. He went up to his room a she did not see Akriti anywhere. He found her sitting on his bed, doing her victimisation, the kind of face he could not bear to see. He retrieved the papers from his bag and walked towards her.

"I would like this marriage to be annulled as it makes no sense."

He stepped back as she rose from the bed.

"Who said this marriage makes no sense? I didn't marry you so you could divorce me!"

"You know very well that you don't love me, you just love the idea of being married to me and that's two different things."

Anubav saw when she was going to lose her patience, and he just wished she'd come clean for once, but she loved the drama and believed she could manipulate everyone to get what she wanted.

"I would never sign that damn paper."

"I knew you weren't going to make it easy for me, after all, you think we're in a contest, there has to be a winner and a loser when it comes to life."

"Keep your moral lesson to yourself, I will destroy you."

"Let's say you're going to try, said Anubav in a firm voice. Except that things don't always work out the way you want them to. I advise you to do it quietly, but I don't mind making noise like you like."

He saw the look in her eyes when she realised she wouldn't have the last word. She walked out of the room and he understood that the rest would be in front of the family.

He sent a message to Gungun.

"Don't call me until I do, and please have dinner tonight. Don't make me worry about you when I have important things to do."

"Okay...But... could you still come to night..."

"I won't promise you anything, but I'll do my best. Remember, EAT!"

He heard cries and his name. He looked up atthe ceiling asking God for strength. Who knows, maybe a miracle might happen...

His mother had the annulment papers in her hands and she dropped onto the sofa. Her aunt Goli was shouting something. His aunt had a holy horror of men since her misadventures with her ex-fiancé, she was intolerant and closed-minded on subjects he would really prefer she wasn't...

Anubav heard the word "infidel" several times and it made him lose his composure...

"Who is the infidel?"

"You,shouted his aunt Goli. How can you do this when you haven't even been married a month?"

"I think you're mistaken about something!"

"Tell us everything, said her father in a calm voice. Anu, we didn't raise you like this."

"What does education have to do with love? You are here taking part in this drama when it only affects my private life.

"You are a child of this family so what ever affects you affect us," says BP in a harsh voice."

Anubav turns to him and looks him straight in the eye.

"That's the concern. I am a member of this family, but that doesn't mean I have to live by what you decide. I gave in to marrying Akriti because you were emotionally blackmailing me, that's how things work here!"

He heard his mother make a noise, but he didn't care about her melodrama. And continued his tirade.

"Who tried to calm me down when things were down? Nobody! You were all out there looking for a replacement for the woman who was to become my wife, either out of reputation or just to get even with the situation... Who wanted to know what I wanted?"

He turned to his father and continued.

"Until now I have always considered this family, my responsibilities to you have always been my priority, but now they lie else where and I do not expect your agreement, but your understanding."

"In this family the word divorce does not exist, BP shouted."

Anubav sighed and looked at him. He was about to say something nasty, but his uncle Golu put his hand on his shoulder.

"Tactfully Annu, he will understand."

"That's what I've been doing all along Chaachu. You are here taking in the so-called pains of a woman who is here acting, while I am your blood, you don't seem to see my pain."

"What do you mean Anu? asked Neeti."

She was one of the women who seemed to understand his heart better, but for some time she had been dancing to Akriti's notes, that he did not bother to answer her.

"I don't like Akriti, we don't have any relationship that is remotely similar to what a husband and wife should be. So it is only natural that I should ask forthe annulment of this marriage!"

"But..."

He lost his patience and pushed his father's hand away and turned to his mother who kept crying.

"A mother knows her child's heart, that's what you've been telling me since I was a child, and instead of supporting me you cry your eyes out?"

"Anu, shouted her father."

"What Anu? I have always been the master of my life, I gave in once, Gungun came into my life. Then again you put Akriti in my arms. But my heart, my soul had already accepted Gungun as my wife."

He took a deep breath to finally speak the truth.

"The person who filled Gungun's maang was me. On the day scheduled for our own wedding, at the appointed time, I married him. Admittedly, the situation was not what we would have wanted, but the play of fate did the right thing and here we are husband and wife."

This time it was the whole family that fell over something, but her mother was the only one who stood up. She was still crying, but seemed to have pulled herself together. She put her hand on her cheek.

"Anu...I understand, I understand."

She turned to BP and looked at him, wiping her tears.

"Let him do what he wants, as always, our Anu is what he does."

"In this family there has never been a divorce and there never will be."

Anu laughed derisively, but his mother took his hand.

"He is my son and only his happiness matters to me! You can say what you like, but I will support him to the end."

A weight left Anubav's heart, no matter what BP will say, he needed his mother's support. He was sure, no matter who was against it, he could get the marriage annulled and live his life with Gungun.

The evening ended on a note of despair, but Anubav felt that everything would soon be alright.

Chapter 4: Everything has an end!

It was acomplicated week. The house was split in two and Akriti was enjoying being a victim and this was up setting Anubav, but the lawyer asked him to stay calm and wait.

Today on his way home from work he saw a car in front of the house, he knew that trouble had come to his door.

He saw Akriti's father shouting at his family and this made him angry.

"Mr Saxena! shouted Anubav."

The latter turned towards him red with anger. But Anubav's family knew the boy, so they breathed a sigh of relief and resignation.

"So don't lecture my family, think about educating your daughter. If you taught her what is right and wrong, I don't think things would have come to this."

"Wha tdo you mean? Besides having no remorse, you think you're smart, Akriti's father replied."

"Your believes that she can get anything she wants because she has decided to."

Anubav turned to the drama queen, and gave a wry smile.

"Shall I explain to my family how we ended up married?"

Akriti's gaze turned wary, she believed Anubav was unaware of what she did.

"That party where my family was humiliated by Dr. Maya, should I tell them that you were a part of that?"

Anubav's mother put her hand over her mouth and Badi Maa let out a scream. Finally, the whole family began to look at Akriti with a different set of eyes.

"So it's true Bahu? asked BP, did I feed a snake thinking that she was so devoted to my family when she is wearing a mask!"

"No BP, began Akriti."

"Cut the crap Akriti! You don't love me, what you love is to have what Gungun has! You think you love me, but you are interested in possessing me. I am a person not an object, so I am asking you one last time! Sign the marriage annulment or I will have to file a complaint!"

"It is I who should file a complaint against your family, shouted Akriti's father."

"What's your motive? I have plenty of reasons, and I'm not sure you'd like your daughter's name to be sullied!"

The two men glared at each other, at which point Garima arrived and sighed.

"It's time to stop this circus, she said, walking towards her husband. You know very well that Akriti doesn't like Anubav, and I wouldn't want to say what happened at the wedding, so do as he asks."

"What happened Garima-ji, asked BP."

"My daughter doesn't like Anubav, she just wants to have what Gungun has. She thinks Gungun is taking everything that is supposedly hers. I am really sorry that things have come to this."

BP dropped down on the sofa, several family members surrounding him. Anubav did not feel sorry. He was the only one who believed that Akriti was the perfect daughter-in-law she liked to show off.

"Anubav, said BP in a small voice. You have my support..."

Anubav doesn't say anything, it's not like he's expecting her support, but if it calmed things down in the house it's already a good thing. Anubav's mother handed the papers to Akriti with a pen.

"Free my son! she said in a cold voice. It's time to stop all this!"

Akriti sought her father's support, but Anubav stepped forward.

"I'm telling you again Akriti, you can either do it nicely or I can help you do the drama you love so much! And you know what kind of society we live in! I could live my life the way I want to, but I doubt it for you!"

Akriti's ego was eating away at her, she wanted to get even, but the father calmed down when he saw Anubav's resolve.

"Akriti sign, he finally said."

"But Daddy..."

"One thing at a time, sign, we'll see what happens next."

"There's nothing next. You think you can control others, but you've got the wrong idea. Don't force me to show you who I really am!"

Anubav's mother and his gang stood aside and behind him was the whole Kulshreshth family against them.

Akriti signed the paper and sent it to Anubav, she went upstairs to collect herthings, she stopped at the door.

"You think you can be happy with Gungun? Don't count on it!"

"I don't care what you think, please get out of my house."

Anubav sighed as she finally left. There was still Garima standing in front of him.

"I'm sorry, she said. My daughter..."

"You don't have to apologize. This is all our fault. My family for believing that you can replace a person and me for not taking courage to refuse.

"I hope you will be happy with Gungun."

"Thank you so much for everything."

Garima gave him a smile and left.

Anubav hugged his mother, he finally felt free. Of course, too much had happened so he couldn't ask his family to accept Gungun yet, but he would work on it in the days to come.

His uncle patted him on the back, and he laughed softly. His team was always there for him. Now he had to tell Gungun the good news and the first thing tomorrow bring the documents to the lawyer.

"Anu."

Anubav turned to his BP, and he didn't like the look in his eyes. What was he going to tell him?
