Part 7
"Hello" Dev says in an angry voice.
"Hello, Dev"
"Yes, who is this," Dev asks
"Dev, main bol rahi hoon,"
"Kaun main, who is this???" Dev is getting frustrated now.
And then what Dev hears, takes all the life from his face, and leaves an expression of mere disbelief and shock. It was as if a bomb had exploded in his ears. He couldn't believe his ears,
"What, who the hell are you, and what do you mean." And for a moment Dev is silent as if listening with all his attention to the other person,
"Where are you?" Dev asks, and Kaajjal could feel a sudden strangeness in his voice, he gets up, leaving Kaajjal on the bed, "where are you"
"What, outside the gate" and Dev stumbles on the table,
"Dev," Kaajjal immediately runs for him,
"Watchman, bring the lady in," It seems like whoever the other person was had given her cell phone to the watchman. And Dev disconnects the phone. Kajjal could see the blood running out of his face, he is shocked and lost, all of a sudden pale and lifeless …. a moment ago the passion that she had seen in his eyes is no more there; instead there is a strange kind of astonishment.
"What is it Dev," Kaajjal grabs his shoulder from behind.
"Nothing," Dev mutters, looking at something in the air, don't know where, and Kaajjal knew that there is something wrong …. What is this pain on his face, where did it come from … whats going on … she asks her self …
"Dev, tell me what is it." Kaajjal insists,
"I don't know Kaajjal, I don't know!!!" and Dev gets out of the room.
"Dev who were you talking to," Kaajjal grabs her dupatta and runs after him. So many questions are crossing her mind while she is following Dev, what happened? Who was on the other side? Why is Dev so disturbed? Dev is moving quickly towards the main door, as if what he is about to see will change his life forever. Kaajjal is still on the last step when Dev opens the door. In an instant Kaajjal senses his body freezing, as if something had held his feet and he is in a state of shock, his eyes are wide open, and his face is a perfect picture of disbelief.
A very pretty girl is standing there, with an eager look on her face and the moment she looks at Dev she runs and steps into his arms. She holds him and starts crying. Dev is totally stunned to see her, he couldn't believe his eyes, how is this possible? How is this true? is she really …. ?????? And he is just standing there with a million thoughts crossing his mind, while the woman is still holding him and crying. Kaajjal has Dev's back towards her and she can't see his expression, but she can surely see his body tensing. She is wondering whats going on,
"I am sooo glad to have found you Dev. I am so happy to see you!!!" the woman says while still holding him close to her. As she speaks, Dev comes back to his senses, and gets himself out of her embrace.
"Who is this woman and why is she holding Dev like this, and why is Dev so tensed?" Kaajjal mind is racing at the speed of light. The noise had awaken almost everyone,
"Dev, yeh shor kaisa," NT comes down the stairs, and sees Kaajjal standing on the stairs, "Kaajjal??" she looks at her and then she looks at the woman, and there, it was as if she had seen a ghost … a shocked look, and Kaajjal is now worried, afterall, who is she and why is everyone so stunned to see her. And then comes down chachi, Veer, Nandani, Ameesha, Karan. Everyone is behaving as if they have seen a phantom. This suspense is killing Kaajjal, she wants to ask who is she but stays quiet.
And then NT speaks, "Payal," and Kaajjal wished she had never heard it, for it totally tore Kaajjal into pieces, 'Payal' the word echoed in her mind. And she feels as if her legs would not support her, and she grabs the bannister to support herself.
Payal is still crying, and Dev brings her to the sofa, and makes her sit down. He looks up and sees Kaajjal, and Kaajjal sees a strange kind of something in his eyes, as if he is worried, and totally stressed. The flashes of the lovely moments they just shared crosses their minds, and then Dev looks back at Payal.
Everyone is looking at Payal for answers that are crossing their minds like crazy. And Payal starts speaking, "when I had that accident, I was with my friend. Since I was not feeling well, she was driving. We were crossing the bridge, when a truck hit us, and I fell down the bridge into the water, and hit my head hard on a rock. I don't know what happened after that," Payal looked up at Dev, who is sitting there just listening to her, "when I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital. But I realized I had lost my memory. I had no idea who I was, or where I belonged." She looks up at everyone once again and continues, "I was told that a man, Sahil, saved my life and brought me here. I was totally helpless and lost, I didn't know what to do or say. All I could do was cry and Sahil didn't want to leave me there with no hope and nowhere to go. He took me home with him and he and his mother took care of me, looked after me day and night. I had almost started a new life with no memories of my past when eight weeks ago Sahil convinced me to undergo the operation to repair the traumatic brain aneurysm which had caused my sudden memory loss after the accident. Ths operation was a success and this time when I woke up, I knew I was Payal. I still don't remember all the details, but every day that passes by brings back the memories of the times we spent together and the moments we shared Dev. for then I knew I was Dev's Payal." At this, she looks up at Dev and hearing her call herself Dev's Payal, Dev anxiously looks at Kaajjal, and Kaajjal is totally shattered. How could she endure someone else calling herself Dev's!!!! Had she been someone other than Payal, Kaajjal would have killed her, but Payal …. Dev has always been Payal's … and this thought totally destroys her.
"What's wrong, are u not happy to see me" she looks at everyone, "ma, chachi, Nandani bhabi, Ameesha bhabi" she looks at almost everyone, and finally looks at Dev, and everyone who is lost in their own thoughts comes back to reality. What are they supposed to say? How will they face Kaajjal? what will happen now? These questions are killing everyone. And when no one speaks for some time, Payal gets up and walks to Dev, she holds his face and looks into his eyes, "aren't you happy to see me Dev. Look I am your Payal," and Dev doesn't know what to say, he is completely shattered, torn apart, he feels as if his heart is breaking, and he doesn't know how to tell her that today Kaajjal is his life, today Kaajjal is his only happiness, today Kaajjal is the reason for his existence. At this he looks at Kaajjal, and can easily see her breaking, and that's it, he can't see his life breaking down like this. He leaves Payal where she is and moves to Kaajjal, and stands next to her, "Payal, this is Kaajjal, my wife." These words send an electric wave to the entire room. Payal is shocked at hearing this, she looks at Kaajjal, and then looks back at Dev, and Dev takes a step towards her, "Payal, mai nay tum say bohat pyar kiya tha, and I spent the last 2 years only loving you, but than Kaajjal came, and everything changed." He is now standing in front of Payal, a little bent, and looking deep into her eyes, for he has no confusion left in his mind that who he loves, and wants to spend the rest of his life with. At the same time he doesn't want to hurt Payal, but that was inevitable, for someone was bound to get hurt.
And then NT took control, "Payal, idhar aao, meray paas betho," she makes Payal sit on the sofa, and narrates the entire two and a half years to her. "Aaj hi Dev aur Kaajjal ki shadi hue hai," she finishes her story with this last sentence. "Ab tum hi batao, aisay halaat main kya kiya jayay." There is a silence in the room for another 2 minutes and then Ameesha takes the lead, "lekin mom, hum Payal kay saath bhi tu na-insafi nahi kar saktay na, aakhir yeh Dev ki patni hai" and hearing this, Kaajjal takes a step back, sobs, and runs upstairs to her room. Dev sees her and runs after her, but Karan stops him in the middle, "nahi Dev is waqt tumhain Payal kay paas hona chahiyay. After all she has come back after a long time, and she needs you, don't forget, she is your wife." And Dev is totally devastated. He doesn't know what to do. He wants to run to Kaajjal, but he doesn't want to hurt Payal, for he knows he has an obligation towards her.
