His eyes slowly opened, his head whirling from several trips to the gates of hell and back.

Reminded me of what I wrote on the poem. Yes it's been 'hell and back' to our dear couple - No doubt about that. 😔

He recognised the smell of overgrown moss 'Underground'

A few blinks on, he recognised the dark stone 'Dungeon'

Then, he recognised the light.

'Heera?'

What? 'N... no' Certain he was hallucinating, he closed his eyes.

And opened them only after a while.

'H... Heera!'

But, she? Here? In the dungeons? Alone? 'No... n... no' Wasn't possible.

He closed his eyes. And opened them again.

'A... ai Kh... Khuda!' It WAS her. Cradling him, watching over him, like an angel from the Heavens above. God knew, the torrid fever raging through his flesh felt real. The caustic sting wreaking havoc on his back felt real. The weakness felt real. But SHE? She felt surreal 'M... my love...'

'Yes it's me... Khan Sahib... your love... your Heera... you've opened your eyes!'

He didn't hear what she said. Or maybe he did, but he didn't process all of it, for his dazed mind hadn't even come to terms with her presence there. 'Is she really here?' As a gentle test, he took his palm up to her face, letting his thumb lightly graze her cheek to catch the last tear before it fell.

The tear was real!

'Oh Lord' So, she HAD walked through the fires, for his sake.

Through the fires? 'N.. no... she shouldn't... shouldn't be here... not here...' This was the haunt of beasts and brutes - and a morgue for all others. This was no place for women. Definitely not for his beloved. 'Hee... y... you must leave...'

Reminders of ' another time , another place' ...

The Canal...

'Hey!' The guard tapped his spear on the metal bars, before pointing its sharp tip to the plate of food she was holding 'Stop!'

Heera's clutches tightened around the plate, at both edges.

'Sahiba... worry not... your husband will get to eat...' he rolled his tongue over his lips 'but, YOU go first, Sahiba'
