Hiding Behind A Stranger( a novel by Lashy)How the novel unfolded so far...(continues from p 1)Chapter 11. The Betrayal.."The queen took proud strides along the line of maids as she spoke - 'So, it is understandable that we want his bride, to be a princess... to possess wealth and status that matches ours... to come from an illustrious family...' she exhaled 'Harka bai is only a Mansabdar's daughter... that too, with a disability..."'Maasa...' he raised his palm 'please... we shall discuss this later...' having shushed his mother's cries, he turned to face their royal guest 'I accept this alliance, Maharaj... I will wed Harka Bai on the next auspicious date...'At a Hukka Joint.."Getting my hands on some important information.
Past sunrise, wait for me at the Hukkah joint beside..."
'Where is Faizan now? Is... my... informer... dead?'
At the Guest quarters, Aidabad..
Shaking off the stupor, Heera bent down and picked up the urn, holding it protectively close to her chest 'As a child, I was the one who used to like hiding in urns and planters... now you've been hiding in here all these days, jiji... maybe it's time, you came out...' she sighed with a heavy heart. Pulling her veil low, she eventually relented to fate and gave the ladies the order 'Let's leave'
The Stables..
...Watching her in a state so crestfallen - with drooping shoulders and head bent low - was not a pleasant sight. It was a striking reminder of how vulnerable she was now. A striking reminder of the grim reality behind her seven troubling words 'There have been threats to my life.'
Akbar turned away, a faint tug toying with the hollows of his chest. A tug that was more than just plain bystander's sympathy. A tug that encompassed a confusing mix of emotions - some of which he understood, like pity, empathy and guilt. But some of which he couldn't even begin to understand.
Manaswar..
He leaned back, majestically crossing his right leg over the left 'Everything has worked out favourably though... and I shall soon be getting what I've wanted all along...' his brow gradually rose into a proud frown, a faint smirk emerged at the corner of his lips 'Parnagarh!'
"Today, Harka Bai is the sole owner of a land that is more precious and powerful, than status or prestige... a land that'll help me gain great authority at court... probably help me cut a deal with the Shehzaade... so... I tell myself, that I'm doing this for a greater good...''"Apart from being the most stunning lady I've come across... Harka Bai is humble and meek... a combination that is difficult to turn down... which means, it would be easier for me to take ownership of Parnagarh with Harka by my side, than it would have ever been with Durga... so if anything, these turn-of-events have actually worked out in my favour... for which, I must thank the old man...'
...
..After all, she was his prized courtesan "Get me a drink!"
'I hear you will be wedding the beautiful younger sister... does that mean you'll forget me, when the new bride arrives?'
Her question compelled Mahendar to grin through the drink he was sipping 'Now THAT depends... entirely on you...'
Chapter12. Theft in Haveli-Enquiry, Trial and Judgement!
'Why are we inviting Mughals for this lunch... when it's a traditional feast, in honour of Durga baisa?'
This being the first instance that she was hosting such a significant occasion by herself, Heera was supervising the arrangements with remarkable efficiency, as expected..
The Main Haveli..
'Did you do a count, Ibrahim?' he asked
'Yes...'
'And how much is missing?'
'60 silver coins... the red pouch is missing!'
...
'Sayyid... Azeez... his brother will either be at his house... or at the shop... you'll find the 60 silver coins with him... drag him here... and the truth will be known ... quick!'
"Did you assume that since I wouldn't be home this morning, your crime would go unnoticed?''
...this was just another day, just another incident, in the dangerous life that he led.
Chapter 13. Bitter memories of Akbar's childhood
Guest quarters..
Heera went on to reveal the significance of the 13th day feast to the Mughal man, concluding her explanations with a personal invite 'And that is why I would like you to come, Chacha Sahib'
'This morning, Akbar had an accident when he was out on some work... Bahadur's been injured gravely...' he paused 'Our Hakim is away, in a distant town... would you be able to take a look at the horse for us, Sahiba?'
At the Stables..
'Harka Sahiba?'
It was the first time he'd taken her name - and my, had he done it with flair. A short sigh later, she turned around 'Yes?'
The man was facing the direction of his injured horse 'You may go ahead... and examine Bahadur...' he announced.
'We are hosting a feast in honour of my sister this noon, Khan Sahib...' she mentioned cordially 'you are welcome to join us...'
Main Haveli..
He was absolutely famished.
However, when he got to the kitchens, there was nothing.
The pots sat in their corners, untouched. The plates hadn't been moved from their shelves. There was no sign of food anywhere. Not a single morsel. Not even of leftover bread.
'So you weren't joking when you said, you've grown tired of cooking for me, Chacha jaan?'
His flashback..
Many years ago, a boy used to stand the same way in the empty kitchens of his Abbu's mansion, his weakened shoulders leaning against the wall, while his eyes scoured the place for signs of food..
Yet, no one would care. All, except one - Abbu's old servant, who swept the kitchens.
'Chacha jaan...' the 12 year old would smile with gratitude ever so often 'when I grow older and become a big man... I'll take you away with me... I'll care for you... and I promise... I'll eat no one else's food, but yours... I've become so used to your delicious dishes...'
( Will continue..)
Karkuzhali.
Periyamma... you are amazing.
Was a woman's innocent smile always this intoxicating? And this contagious? After all, he'd never met an innocent woman before, and he'd never cared to observe anyone's smiles either.
...Don't you realise that the ground you're treading on, is extremely risky? One step more, and you'll fall... worse, you'll pull her down with you. The Sahiba doesn't know the truth... but YOU are aware of the truth, aren't you? Then, why are you indulging her smiles...' he heaved a few more dashes of water on his face - possibly so the rough reminders would hit home harder 'What are you trying to prove, Akbar Khan? And, to WHOM?'
'I have to leave tomorrow morning to catch up on my work... wouldn't return to Aidabad for two days... hopefully, the Sahiba and her party would've left the haveli, before I get back!'
"Forget about all this for now... tell me, my dear friend... any news of the Farmaan yet?'
Following a tense pause, Ustaad placed his cards, facing down, on the table 'Not yet, Huzoor!'
'That darned Farmaan! Have the cursed fires of Hell swallowed it?' 'nevertheless... any news about the Sahiba? I mean... any news about the younger heiress, Harka Sahiba? Any updates... or thoughts on her?'
ANY thoughts on her? Well, he had plenty. Plenty of news and updates too that he could convey if he wanted to, as part of idle talk. After all, he'd stumbled across quite a few small facts about her over the past two weeks, which they hadn't known about at the start...
'I am blind... actually, partially blind!'
'Ustaad Akbar Mahmoud Khan!'
...
The Shehzaade studied his officer's face closely. There was something different about the Ustaad's behaviour today. He was sure of it now. Of course, he wasn't aware of what it was that was playing on the man's psyche - but, he had his own ways to find out.
Manswar..
'That worthless degenerate has called off the deal...' he downed its contents in one go, letting the bitterness burn his throat 'He blames me for it... blames ME... can you imagine? I'd given him all the details of the haveli... explained everything... but that pervert messed it up... and now blames ME for misleading him! And this Ustaad... WHY the hell is he involved in the Parnagarh mess now?'
'Khalil was so determined to get his hands on the Farmaan... at least by being a part of this plan, I thought I would gain something out of it...'
Aidabad..
No, poor Bahadur hadn't understood a word of what she'd said, though it did love listening to the sweet rhythm of her words.
But what it DID hope was that the Lady would eventually understand its gesture-of-gratitude, when it'd stood beside her to coddle her palm 'Thank you kind lady... for the changes you've brought in my dear master's life... changes that I hear in the livelier tones of his voice, every passing day.'
Chapter 16. "Just Stay Safe"
Yes, it was undeniably HIM.
'Khan Sahib? But...What's Khan Sahib doing here?'
..
'DON'T move... Sahiba...'
'Sahiba...' he spoke over her 'when I say move, just jump forward immediately... DON'T look back... alright?
...
Alas! The very next instant, the scorpion's lethal tail had found its mark - on an exposed part of his hand.
'Arrrgh...'
'Don't worry about me...' he scoffed 'I've grown immune to such poisons and venoms...'
Internalising the unbearable agony caused by the first toxic droplets coursing through his veins, Akbar casually removed the wrapped scarf from his fist 'Just stay safe, Sahiba!'
Sometime later...
'Don't worry about me... I've grown immune to such poisons and venoms... just stay safe, Sahiba!'
Those three lines had told her more about the man than anything her own guards had uncovered, than anything her own maids had found out about him in the past 10 days, leaving her with mixed feelings - both, good and unsettling.
Night- at the Safe House..
A dull ache abruptly needled through his chest - an ache distinctively different from all the other physical pains he was enduring right then.
'Hundreds' he smirked at the never-ending ironies in his life through a bout of raspy cough 'Hundreds of women this warrior turned down... and the one woman that he wishes to protect, he can't...'

Once again I'm late to this, but I meticulously went through all the comments and compliments, and most importantly your explanation of this book cover. Not sure which one epithet would be the best to praise, I'll rather say what all I like about it...
One, the eyes. The most significant part of a potrait, they express the sentiments perfectly well. Uncertainty in hazel, speaks all the words that Manasi quoted, to those pacifying blacks. Two, the contrast of situation to surroundings. Though "trapped" is the situation, "tangled" are thoughts, the ambience feels like "how a real home should be". Third, the brightness of the entire picture compared to mysterious, half lit profiles of the previous montage. Be it there attire, the backdrop, I loved the use of warm shades - crimson, gold, chrome, the olive greens, all in all it's all "lit up", and it's beautiful. Fourth, that thanks to their heights and builds, she's actually "looking up" to him and that, what is "trapped" is also "shielded and protected".
And last, it was your earnest imagination and thoughts and the maker's sincere efforts to bring to canvas your mental pictures, that were most profound, I loved those the most. Now... What are you waiting for? Update soon, Madonna! 😉
