CHAPTER 8:

23rd December, to meet with Paresh Sindhu...

"I think this is the house. Jodha stopped the car in front of a rural brick house with a new roof of asbestos. "Let's try... She looked at Jalal. "Hey man! What happened?

Jalal was thinking something. He broke the static and looked at Jodha. "Surya was in search of Paresh Sindhu almost 2 years back. At the same time when he had planned to computerize all data. After that he started prospering very rapidly! Now thing is...

"First let us talk to the members of this family. Jodha opened the car door and came out. "Come on Jalal.

"Yes... Jalal followed her. Jodha went forward and knocked the wooden door. A minute of waiting, then a middle-aged widow opened the door.

"Hello. My name is Jodha Singh and he is... Jodha had only started, but could not complete as the woman started wailing vulnerably and violently as well! "Again! Again Singhs?? Why? Why don't you leave us? We listened to all Rajasahab ordered my son. What happened again?

"What? Both of them were severely confused.

"You're Rajasahab's daughter, aren't you? I heard Rajasahab's daughter lives in city and wears pant-shirt! (Jodha with an awkward expression ran her eyes though her outfit quickly! 😆 ) Listen to me, look... The panting woman clenched her hand suddenly in excitement. "I am like your mother, I am requesting you... please leave my son! He will never look at the daughter of your family, I... I give my words! He... he is not even in this village now! He has left for city...

"Wait wait wait... A confused Jodha held her hands. "I can't understand what you are saying... Can we talk sitting inside?

The woman gave them space to enter the house. The house looks very very simple. The sign of poverty is clear in each corner, still the clean and organized ambiance shows that the members of the family do have good taste. It can be also told that very recently the financial condition of the house is getting better. The newly made electric lines and the new fan and light and the new roof of the house as well tell this only. A wooden rack on the wall suddenly grabbed their attention. The rack consists of some medals... Out of curiosity Jalal went there and Jodha followed him. He picked up a medal... medal from school for exceptionally good result in boards.

"Rishav was a very good student! He is the hope of our family! Don't snatch him from us! The woman started crying again.

"Rishav? Jalal frowned. He has heard the same name very recently!

"Maa... Who's there? Has your son come back? A woman of Jodha's age came out from the attached kitchen; she is clearly expecting a child. She became perplexed suddenly looking outsiders in the house, then put on her veil on the head. "Who are they? She whispered to her mother-in-law.

"She is Rajasahab's daughter. The woman whispered, and the line of worry reflected in the pregnant woman's face. "Look, I don't know why you have come... But Rishav is not here. He has left the village and joined the new job in Mumbai. So please leave us. She was sobbing silently. "You can see I am expecting a child; for the sake of the child, please don't harm us!

"We have not come to harm you. Just we want to talk to you. Jalal came forward. "I am ACP Jalal Khan, coming from Mumbai Police...

"What... Ri...rishav... The woman screamed out. "Is he alright? What happened to him? I told you bahu something must have happened to him! He is not picking up the phone also... What... what... She started trembling in fear and cry.

"Please control yourself!! Jodha held her tightly and made her sit. "Nothing has happened to Rishav... I mean we have no idea about him. We have come for some entire different reason!

"Di...different reason?

"Yes... Jodha frowned. "Don't you know, Rajasahab is no more?

Both of them stayed silent. Jalal sat on a stool before the lady. "So your son is Rishav, who wanted to marry Rajasahab's niece?

"He... he is a young soul Police Sahab, he has done mistake... He has touched the feet of Kanha and promised me that he will never ever meet her...

"Don't fret. Jalal told. "Why and when he left for Mumbai? And from when you are not getting his phone-calls?

"Don't worry, we will not harm your son. We will rather help you. Please don't lie to us! Jodha touched her shoulder.

"Rishav was teaching in a collage of nearby town. Sukanya Singh was his student there. Then... they... The young woman started speaking instead of her. "Then Rishav wanted to marry her, and so he met Rajasahab to ask for her hand... then... She started sobbing. "Rajasahab insulted him badly and also threatened him... then my husband was sacked from his job of the farm; our own land was seized, also they threatened to send my husband in prison by implicating him in the charge of theft. We had no way but to send Rishav out...

"He told that he will never come back and will contact us! Rishav's mother started crying again! "And he even didn't receive a call after reaching Mumbai!!

"I see! Jalal uttered. Jodha sighed hearing the whole story.

"Anyways, we had something else to ask...Jodha told after a moment. "This is Paresh Sindhu's house, right?

The women stared at her with wonder. Then she nodded her head. "He was my husband!

"I want to know everything about him. Can you help me please? Jodha told.

"He left us almost 20 years ago... Rishav was only 8 then; and Bibhas, my elder son was only 16... She wiped out the tear from her cheeks. "I can't tell how much I had to struggle to establish my sons! Fortunately Rajasahab gave my elder son the job of his father...

"He was a farmer working under the farm, isn't it?

"Yes... He was the leader of the farmer's association. She told. "He had an intimacy with Sujamal Sahab, Rajasahab's brother.

Jodha and Jalal looked at each other. This was unexpected information. "Sujamal kaka had friendship with your husband? Jodha frowned.

"No... not friendship... But Sujamal Sahab used to come to our house. He used to talk with him for hours. My husband and his followers had many problem and allegations regarding land-divisions, amount of payment given from the farm and many things. Sujamal Sahab used to hear patiently and tried to solve that according to his ability. She suddenly became slower and silent. "Sujamal Sahab had come here many times the month my husband died. They used to talk for hours...

"When your husband passed away? And how?

"That was on the month of January. The coldest night of the month... His friends carried him from the farm. He was constantly vomiting blood. The memory of old days again brought tear in her eyes. "Everything was finished in some minutes; even I could not call the local doctor!

"What was the reason of this sudden death? Didn't anyone tell you about that? Jodha asked.

The woman shook her head. "But... she talked after a moment fighting with the hesitation. "I did remember one thing... Sujamal Sahab used to come to my house after that ample of time. He used to request me to go to police. She gulped. "He suspected that my husband did not die normally, he had been killed!

"Why didn't you go to police that time? Jodha asked.

"I had no idea what to do! I didn't even think to go to police and get into all the problems! And then after only 4-5 days Rajasahab himself gave my Bibhas a job in farm... after that why would I like to invite hazards! She gave excuse.

Jodha frowned. "After that? Didn't Sujamal Sahab come to your house after Bibhas got job?

"Yes... He was severely angry on me. He tried to pursue me thousand times to go to police, and he himself will bring justice to my husband! But I didn't pay heed. She sighed. "After that too he used to come, used to ask me several questions about my husband's works and all... but I knew nothing. He had told me once that my husband was fighting for right, so he has been killed, I should stand up against wrong like him too! And after that he too left the world forever!

"Do you have any idea that about what your husband and Sujamal Sahab used to talk for hours? Jodha asked excitedly.

"I don't understand much. Only he used to tell me that Rajasahab wants to snatch everything from the poor farmers just to increase his property, and he will revel against it till the end! Sujamal Sahab used to discuss on same topic... He used to instigate my husband against the authority of farm! I heard many times he is telling him to stop the peasants from signing the documents given by Rajasahab... She was fetching facts from her memory. "I still remember what he had told me some days before he passed away. He told me that the container of sin of Rajasahab is already full, now he will give him right punishment. And he also told that from then on none will dare to humiliate the women of our land!

"And then??

"Then... he left! She sighed again. "But... what happened? Why are you asking these after so many years?

"Was there anyone who had asked you about these incidents before? Jalal suddenly asked, without replying her.

"No... Wait... Yes... The women answered after thinking about it. "Almost two-three years ago, Surya used to come in our house frequently; he used to ask a lot of things about my husband and Sujamal Sahab.

"Surya? Do you know him?

"Yes... He had an acquaintance with Rishav in college. And also Bibhas works under him in farm. She replied. "Though he never had that much intimacy with my sons, but two-three years ago, I remember, he started to be much friendly with our family all of a sudden. Bibhas and Rishav did not use to stay, but still he used to come almost every day, used to chat with me and used to ask me many things about him. I told everything to him that I told you today...

"Hmmm! Jalal stood up. "Okay, Mrs. Sindhu, we are going today. Don't worry, your son will be alright. He assured.

The women walked with them to the door. Before closing the door she coughed a little to show her hesitation.

"Do you want to tell anything? Jodha asked.

"I don't know if I should tell or not... but... The women lowered her eyes and murmured in an almost muted tone. "My son Rishav had gone to meet with Rajasahab to talk about Sukanya and his relation. He insulted him badly... and... she took a long breath before talking. "Rishav had told me that he had threatened my son...by...by telling that... She gulped again... "That if he does anything which should not be done by him, he will face the same consequence of his father...

Jodha and Jalal looked at each other with meaningful glare...

"I don't know what to do!! I am very much scared about my son! He is my piece of heart I can't afford to lose him!! She started lamenting again.

"Nothing will happen to him! The man who gave him threat is no more... Jodha patted on her hand before turning back.

...

"What an unexpected turn! Jodha exhaled deeply after coming back in the car. Now Jalal was in driver seat. He did not reciprocate, only put his sunglass unmindfully on eyes and lost in a deep thought before starting the car.

"I didn't ever imagine that Sukanya's lover will turn out to be the son of a former worker of the farm.Jodha commented while gazing at Jalal from the corner of her eyes. "Everything became more mysterious after this encounter! Paresh Sindhu had been killed by my father, as he was protesting against some particular sinful actions of him! But what? Is it connected to this murder after 20 years anyway?

Jalal idly speeded up the accelerator, did not reply.

"What are you thinking all the time? Even you did not ask anything while interrogating Paresh Sindhu's wife? Jodha asked being impatience.

"No... Jalal looked a bit cautious. He frowned looking at Jodha. "Something is pinching in my mind. A little doubt... I am missing something!

"What? Jodha asked...

Jalal bit his lips for a minute, and then suddenly increased the speed of the car. "Let's go to police station... I need to check the reservation chart of trains again...

23rd December, In Local Police Station...

Parking the car right in front of the police station, ignoring the salute of the constables and the endearing offer of tea by Mr. Sahani, Jalal stormed in the cabin of the SI and sat down. "Show me the reservation chart of the train again! He asked in an excitement.

It took only 30 seconds to bring the reservation chart in front of him. Jalal swiftly ran his eyes though the list of passengers. His eyes stuck at one name. "Here is it... He showed Jodha. Jodha read... The train from Mumbai station reached at Wathar station around 7pm. Wather is the nearest train station from Madhubani and it takes only 1 hour maximum to reach Madubani from there... And in the passenger list, name of Rishav Sindhu is very much present!

"Rishav left Mumbai and came here right at the evening Papa was murdered? Jodha exclaimed.

"I noticed the name in morning itself; it caught my attention as I noticed the surname Sindhu, though I did not pay heed. Jalal frowned. "Things are not so simple as I was thinking before. It's complicated.

"Maybe Rishav had come to Wather; does it mean that he had come to Madhubani that evening?

"No... but still, it is tough to imagine everything as a co-incidence! I was just thinking... Jalal looked a bit lost now. "That... Rishav knows that his father was killed by Mr. Singh. He himself has claimed it while threatening him! Also it's not very tough for him to connect the dots of the mysterious death of his father... is it?

"No!Jodha eventually sighed, perhaps thinking about his father's shameless sins!

"Then... who knows... he can also desire for revenge! And with that he had another reason of doing this. Sukanya... Your father was going to marry her off with a criminal; no lover would bear this fact!

"Very much possible... Jodha nodded. "But... Is it possible for him to get a knife from kitchen as a murder weapon??

"You forgot about the fingerprints on the rain-pipe and the footprints on the wet soil outside. Jalal smiled. Jodha stopped and nodded after a moment, frowning deeply.

"But Surya?? She asked after some time. "Why he is vanished midway? Has he any connection with Rishav?

"Right now Surya is like a riddle! Jalal sighed and looked at Sahani. "Order your men to go to the station and interrogate people about Rishav Sindhu's activities after reaching Wather. I want to know where he went after reaching at the station.
