Oh writer-e-khaas, what have you done? (Okay, before you think you have done anything bad, its just how your story and words plays with my thoughts and leave such a deep impact ... I have been thinking about it so much)
I am glad it took me a while to write this take because my reaction to the chapter unfolded in phases; maybe this will be similar to the stages of Harka's own acceptance of Akbar's truth.
Initially, I was likely going to add to Adwi's "Rudaalis". I felt the chapter was on the surface a bit like an Ekta-serial twist, making the truth come out in the worst of circumstances. My heart likely rolled like the helmet that fell from Akbar's hands, worried what would happen (see how I live the chapter?)
As I had mentioned, I had been having this "silly smile" from the last chapter as I imagined a first meeting as Harka awakes to see Akbar next to her. As Akbar himself had hoped, I expected he would tell her the truth but after a respite they both needed after their recent strain and pain.
Yet, what you brought to life in Chapter 28, was much more raw, real, and more epic for sure. At first glance, I thought it was ironic, that while the last few chapters I had been observing their closeness in distance, when they were in close proximity they seemed farther apart than ever before.
But, as is always the case with me, it was Chitti's perspectives that made me see things in a new angle. Perhaps, this distance was a "mirage" after all. Their conflict and distance was a mirage behind which hid the closeness between them. And that is indeed the theme of my take.
1. Behind the ruthlessness that made Akbar seem so distant was his love for his Sahiba. How could he not hurt and weaken Khalil after the pain he had inflicted on Harka? Khalil must never have the strength to do it again.
2. Behind Harka's shirking away from Akbar, was the image of Akbar she had grown so close to. Just moments before she was feeling him close to her as a wishful hallucination. Even after knowing his identity her first recollection was his "Just stay safe." Instinctively she knew he was her protector. Yet, this new side of him felt so different, he became a stranger. "Who are you?" was the only words she could muster.
3. Behind the weakness of Akbar, was Harka's weakened and empty state that pierced his heart to see. He knew he was the cause, yet it was not his intention. What no sword, danger, hunger, or pain accomplished, her words did. Only because the owner of those words meant so much to him.
4. Behind the strength of Akbar was also Harka's weakened and empty state. He must resolve and persist to tell her the full truth to save her from self-destruction; more than for him, it was she he wanted to absolve from guilt and pain. Amazing how the same person can be the source of strength and weakness, but strengh prevails.
5. Behind the outburst of Harka, was the anger, frustration, and disbelief of losing the Akbar who was her only remaining source of strength. What her jiji's death and banishment by her Godparents, his "betrayal" was able to reduce her to. The physical tension of how she went to attack Akbar was vivid. Perhaps, she wanted to attack this new Akbar feeling her old Akbar somewhere behind?
Looking at the confrontations Harka has had with Mahender and Khalil before and looking at her confrontations with Akbar now, there is a big difference. It reinforces how close she is to Akbar is and how much he means to her.
Also, she is at the moment sedated. Not quite the right moment for her to be rational and understand what Akbar has done for her. If he wanted to hurt her, there are many ways he could have done so before. He did not have to just get the farmaan, he could have just gotten rid of her as well.
What makes me even more excited is that it likely his love and dedication for Parnagarh that may help her rediscover his love for her. This is the very Parnagarh she feels she has betrayed for him at the end of the chapter.
I will end with what Ibrahim said, "Don't worry ... everything will work out eventually."
I felt it was you writer-e-khaas that was patting me on the shoulder and telling me it would be all okay. Now, how long is this eeventually?
Thanks again for a beautiful, compelling, and thought provoking chapter.
