Sentiments are a mixed bag... rarely just ever one feeling in them... when Akbar defended himself by mentioning about the 'children' he was helping, one part of it was to put her off his scent... another was probably his ego, wanting to have the upper hand and show her she was wrong... then, there was surely another part of him too that didn't want her assuming something wrong about him, at least over something where, he'd done no wrong...

That's why he questions himself in last chapter too 'What was the need to justify yourself to her? To tell her about the charity work etc...'
