Summer vacation is a long forgotten story and gruelling tuition schedules await the poor students. The students of standard nine are preparing to throw themselves in the sea of new mathematical equations and concepts. They need to work hard, they have been told by the seniors that Maths will be the toughest subject of all. Its the first period, Mr. Panda, the maths teacher is busy writing equations on the board. All the students, except one, are trying hard to figure out - what these Xs and Ys are all about? That exception among these busy students is sitting on the last seat of the fourth row. This 13 year old girl is busy staring out of the window probably admiring the scenery. She is still lost in her world when something hits her in the head. The slight sting is enough to bring the girl out of her stupor. She immediately turns to face the front of the class only to find the strict Maths teacher glaring at her. Of course, the slight sting was because of the chalk aimed at her head by the teacher.
'Ms. Singh, please stand up' bellows the teacher. The girl gulps, tucks her hair behind her ear...the damn strand always escapes her french braid, no matter...'Ms.Singh, I don't have the whole day' thunders Mr. Panda. The girl hurries to follow the command. 'Ms. Singh, please inform the class what got your attention? We all are eager to know, aren't we?' mocks the teacher. Some of the new students diligently nod their heads while old students are passive as they know the drill. It isn't the first time Jodha is caught in this fix. Battling the embarrassment, the chastised girl stutters an apology, ' Sorry sir, I will pay attention'. Mr. Panda frowns at her and says 'Ms Singh, you apologised several times for the same mistake when you were in standard eight and seven, my response has been constant over the years, you know what you are suppose to do. Please get out of the class'. Jodha stares at her feet while taking the steps towards her freedom and finally she is out of the class. Jodha knows she should feel some remorse but all she feels is...relief. Her intention is never to disrespect her teacher but she loathes the subject. She and Maths have real compatibility issues. If not for her friend, she would have failed her Maths final exam in 7th as well as 8th.
Twenty minutes later...
Jodha is restless. She hopes Sir decides to leave the class immediately after the bell. Alas! She has no such luck. Sir continues with his lecture while another teacher exits the room at the far right. Jodha pales 'Shucks! Now they will all tumble out of their class'. In the next instant her prediction comes true, like always..he is the first one to come out of the said room. His head turns to the left, their eyes lock and a huge smile breaks on his face. He hurries towards her with a mischievous twinkle in his dark eyes. Jodha sighs and resigns to her fate..The handsome boy stops right in front of her and teases 'it's a hat-tric. I told you Jo. I told you'. Jodha glares at the elated chap 'Fine. You were right' says the girl acidly. The smile on his face got wider. 'Stop gloating Jalal' snaps Jodha.
