Beautifully put, and I could not have done it better myself. Especially "He is that rare person who has given consequence to every post he has taken up in life rather than be adorned by it". This was so, so true, especially for the Presidency. It acquired a temporary sheen while he was in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, a reflected glow from his luminous presence.
Plus he was such a fun person, and in this he was like the other human being I admire unconditionally, HH the Dalai Lama. Dr. Kalam's eyes were always twinkling, as if at some private joke. Foreign VVIPs who called on him expecting a brief proforma meeting were taken aback when he honed in on some one subject of special interest to the visitor and dug deep into it. I saw it when I accompanied the Canadian PM on his call on President Kalam. The topic then was nano-technology.
He had wired up all the display screens in the various rooms in the Rashtrapati Bhavan to display verses from the Tirukkural, of course with English translations. He asked me, as a fellow Tamil, whether I had noted it. Under his aegis, the Rashtrapati Bhavan became as wired up as Stanford!
Yes, we are indeed lucky to have lived in his times, even if not as one of his students. And I have my signed copies of Ignited Minds and Wings of Fire. I did not seek an autograph from any other President, Indian or foreign, though I have met over a dozen in the course of my 38 years in the IFS.
