Chapter 1

As she laid back, she felt more and more contractions, they seemed to get quicker and longer, she felt her insides tearing apart...tears rolling down her cheek, she grabs the side rails..."Honey is there someone we can call to come and be with you?" she hears the nurse's voice in the background, she begins to sob...the nurse looks at her sadly... "don't worry, I'll be a call away, if you need anything just use the buzzer" handing her the call light "it will go on for another 2 to 3 hours, you are half way there now" she nods and winces in pain as another contraction hits...the nurse runs her hand around feeling her large belly "this is going to be a large baby...do you know if it is a boy or girl?" the nurse asks ... "I really did not want to know...I don't really care as long as I have a healthy baby" she sighs...The nurse pats her on her shoulder saying "its ok, I love to see parents faces when I announce the sex of the baby" she sees Jo's face suddenly sadden and exclaims "Oh! I'm sorry, are you a single parent?"...Jo closes her eyes, tears continue rolling down, "it's okay...the baby dad and I are not in contact...it will be easier that way" she gets hit with another wave of pain...she had watched the Lamaze video a hundred times over and nothing prepared her for this...she was beginning to freak out, she was in LABOR, she was all alone, no one to hold her hand, no nervous husband, father, mother, boyfriend, sister, brother to pace back and forth anxiously like she had seen in the movies...she had only two friends and they were busy with final exams, she did not want to disturb them...everyone in her class including the teachers looked at her with sympathy, they all avoided her like a plague, she did not want any pity from anyone... After she had gone through counseling sessions, she had decided on her own that she would have the baby ...she refused to have an abortion and refused to give it up for adoption.

The doctor walks in checks on her down below...says a few medical lingo...sounded like "almost 100% effaced, fully dilated...it could happen quickly now" she was offered epidural or narcotic for pain ...Jo opted out of narcotic and took the epidural...the next hour passed by quickly ...she screamed and cursed... she heard voices in the background, "push, push" a sudden pain ripped her apart and almost instantaneously she feels relief of pressure and a loud cry "it a boy" the nurse said loudly as she placed him on her chest...Jo stares at his wrinkly, bloody body, she feels his warmth on her belly, he was absolutely the most beautiful baby she had ever seen ...she felt no more pain, only joy...immense peace...she will never be alone...he will always be with me ...tears of happiness flow down her cheeks as she leans forward to kiss his precious little wet slimy head..."you have a very large tear...he's a massive baby, he tore you up coming out...he weighed 9 pounds" ...she looks at the doctor as she spoke..."I'll have to get a plastic surgeon sew you up...my girl you will have rough time having s*x for the first time after it heals...will be almost like you are a virgin...Jo closes her eyes, scene of the past begins to flash and quickly opens them again refusing to allow her brain to dwell in the past...The nurse brings the baby all clean and wrapped up in a bundle, taking him in her arms, she feels an instant bonding as she holds on to his little body "my bundle of joy" she sighs kissing him, he opens his eyes and looks at her...she gets the shock of her life...she looks into the exact pair of eyes she hated the most ...the eyes she wanted to avoid the rest of her life...her little baby had his daddy's eyes she couldn't hate them anymore. She and unwraps and checks every inch of his little body, she could not stop kissing his tiny fingers, toes, his hair, his precious smile, his little ears, ...she whispers into his ears "Salim beta...I am the happiest person in this world today because of you, Thank you for coming into my life." Salim Nuruddin Mohammed was the official name he was registered on paper, but she introduced him as Sony Rai A few hours later her two friends come and visit her Shafik and Aliyah...they bring her a bunch of yellow roses and a box of Lindt chocolate...The nurse come and takes the baby to the nursery ...Jo falls asleep while talking with her friends, tiredness takes over...they sit for a little while and leave ...They had tried their best to get Jo to open up and talk about her life...they could not succeed. Jo was a very private person. Jo wakes up to a crying baby...the nurse walks in and hands her little Salim who seemed quite hungry...as she embraces him in her arms his little head moved frantically till his mouth settled on its food source...he snuggles against her chest ... She whispers in his ears "Salim beta, I promise to always do what is best for you" he falls asleep on her chest, she lets him rest on her enjoying the feeling of comfort. Jo was beginning to feel overwhelmed...

19 yrs old and a single mother with no real family around for support...that was by choice...no one in her family knows about her pregnancy, as far as her family was concerned Jo was busy studying ...Jo was an extremely smart student, who scored 100% on her SATs and got into Princeton University with a fully paid scholarship...she was proud of her achievement, grudgingly her parents agree to let her leave India to study abroad on a condition ...Jo had to agree to an arranged marriage and engagement before leaving the country. A quick engagement with Surya...she left for the US...Shafik was a nice middle eastern guy she met during college registration, he had a crush on Jo when she joined college, during her first week of classes ...he stalked her like crazy...Jo was not ready for a relationship and she made it clear to him she was engaged, very quickly he said "ok then lets be just good friends. By the end of her first week of college ...Jo begins to feel sick, headaches, nausea, stomach cramps ...one day walking back to her dorm she almost passed out...she goes to visit the student health center thinking she might have the stomach bug ... a mandatory pregnancy was test on all female students that visited the health center irrelevant of the complaint... "I am not pregnant, I know because I came on my cycle 3 weeks ago...just a bit of spotting very light due to stress I think ...but it came" chuckles talking to the nurse...Jo gets a shock of her life when her pregnancy test comes back positive. Jo was 18 yrs old almost 19 had been in America less than 6 weeks...

Lying wide awake on her bed in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, she rubs her lower abdomen and feels a level of comfort she never felt before...begins to cry, the next few days flew by fast. After the initial freak out about the whole pregnancy thing, Jo had adjusted well... she met with counselors, doctors, and after lengthy discussions decides it would be to have an abortion...it was scheduled quickly...Jo went into planned parenthood for the procedure, she signs in ...and walks out, she could not do it...she decides to have the baby...she was far away from home, her family did not have to know anything about it...teenage pregnancy was common in America ...it was not looked down on...she got good support local health center and her two friends ...esp shafik who was always by her side for every doctor's visit, mood swings, weird appetite, her first sonogram...she concentrated on her studies, she took summer classes and stayed back in the US much to her family's disappointment and now finally little Salim had entered her life...she took a one bedroom student apartment outside the campus set up by the student family housing center for single moms, she worked part time on campus at the day care and got free daycare for Salim while she was in school full time...Shafik was a good friend who fell in love with Salim the minute he saw him...he was uncle shafik and aunty Aliyah though a bit aloof, not too much into the baby scene ...was around shafik ...they were all Salim and she had as family. Jo does not return to India during her three years of study...convincing her parents "I am taking too many classes, I will graduate, early so I can return soon" ...time flew by quickly ...salim was almost 2 years old...Jo had graduated and was looking for a job. She did not let her family know, every time her parents called they reminded her about her engagement and made it clear to her they were anxious to arrange her wedding...thus Jo avoided going back to India and she did not have the guts to tell her parents the truth... she did not keep in touch with Surya...she had planned to continue with the masters program parallel with working ...she missed her parents, brothers, sister...but she loved Salim more, she brainwashes herself into thinking Salim has only me ...my family have each other.'

"Jodha...Jodha..." the female voice calling her name sounded so familiar...Jo was almost scared to turn around and look... "Jo...I can't believe this...after all these years fancy finding out" Jo turns around and almost faints to find Bakshi walking towards her, her arms wrap around Jo shoulder grabbing her into a tight hug. Jo hugs her back nervously..."hey what happened, you are not happy to see me?" Bakshi questions...Jo a little flustered says "no ...I'm fine, just surprised...I'm glad to see you" Jo says a quick prayer as her heart begins pounding...please let Shafik take Salim outside the store...Bakshi unaware of Jo's uncomfortable predicament continues "I am married, I moved to New Jersey last year and was hoping to run into you...I heard you were attending college here..." Jo's concentration was elsewhere ... "so what do you say...don't you think it will be awesome?" Bakshi looked a Jo sounding excited...Jo had not heard a word...Bakshi's sudden appearance had thrown her off... "why did you cut off all ties with me, never answered any of my emails...you deactivated your facebook and other social media accounts ..I could not track you down at all" she sighs "I missed you Jo, I miss our friendship, our long talks ...I was thinking I should finally give up..." Jo looks away ..."I'm sorry Bakshi...I was too busy with school and could not find time..." suddenly "mommmyeee" before Jo could react ...he came crashing into her legs... "mommy pick me up, pick me up" shafik was right behind trying to catch him...Jo carries him, kisses his little face as he wraps his arms around her neck "I miss you mawmy" Bakshi had a stunned look on her face...she narrows her eyes, tilts her head, shakes her head and says "Jodha Rai...we have to talk" she continues to stare wide eyed at Salim..."I can kill you for this...I feel like I just got hit with a ton of bricks" ...Jo stands in silence...dumb founded...unable to say a word...Shafik walks recognizes the tension Jo briefly introduces him to Bakshi, realizing the weight of the situation he says "I'll take Sony to the pond, you girls catch up" taking Salim from Jo's arms they walk out...Salim turns around "bye mommy" runs back and gives her a hug..."give this aunty a hug too" Jo encouraged ...Salim looks at her briefly, gives Bakshi a hug and runs to Shafik...Jo sees Bakshi's eyes fill with tears ...

"OMG Jo, ...OMG...I can't believe this...he is ..." Jo closes her eyes ...this is something she wanted to avoid very badly that was the main reason she did not go to India at all..."Jo" Bakshi's voice breaks into her thoughts ..."he is isn't he?" Jo composes herself looks up and asks angrily "he is what Baks?" ... " he is my son"...she sees Bakshi's mouth gaping open in awe as she questions "how is this even possible, I can't believe he messed with you, I'm going to kill him..." Jo figured out exactly what Bakshi was talking about...she recognized Jalal in Salim..."Baks I have no idea what you are talking about..." Jo begins to answer when she gets cut off "he is Jalal's... look at him a spitting image of Jalal..." There was no way out of this, she knew she could not lie...anyone that has seen Jalal would recognize Salim...she could not lie her way out...could not deny his parentage. "Jo does he know...?" She grabs her by her shoulder shakes her "Jo you better answer me...does my brother even know, he left you after...he ?" Jo shakes her head... "stop it Bakshi...he does not know, I did not want him to know...I have not seen him since I left your house after I last met you" Bakshi looked surprised ... "no one was home that day...just you and me...so when did you see him?" Bakshi looked hurt, painfully she says "how could you hide him away from us...he is my little nephew...how could you Jo?" Jo stares at her blankly...she could not breath, her world was suddenly falling apart..."I don't want him to know"
