It is not just about me forming an opinion - you yourself said that he he had absolute powers!

A dictator is a ruler who wields absolute authority. A state ruled by a dictator is called a dictatorship - Wikipedia. But i guess Akbar (made endearing by RT) is the only character where a sense of fairness and pragmatic assessment fails you.

As for welfare of people - i dont think there are historical evidences to support it was the most prosperous time in sub continents history, its just that he allowed greater degree of religious reedom( which was anyway the case in society prior to his and other Islamic invasions of India). It is the magnanimity of Indians who have considered him great despite being an invader such examples of acceptance and tolerance are rare in world history.

You are free to form your own opinion !! History is a testament and a dictator will not be so revered. All historians call him not only brave and strategist but an enlightened king who always thought of the welfare of his subjects - His social reforms are IN-THING even today.

My dear dear Chitra @chitterati, an invader is one who is born in a country and then invades another country and uses the wealth of the country he invades for his own purpose - and Akbar does not fit any of these aspects - he was born in India and was the first to concieve the idea of a nation state - these are not my words but those of Swami Vivekanada and Pundit Nehru - and he never plundered Hindustan - so let Akbar not be called an invader - he is as much an Indian as the rest of us today are - lets not forget that the original inhabitants of India / Bharat / Hindustan - the habitants of the Harappan Civilization are very few and we can only claim ancestry to the invading Aryans - so if Akbar is an invader or descendent of invaders then so are we.

for me Akbar was never a lover boy..his love stories are not mentioned at length but his achievements are..i think his stories with birbal are more popular than with muz or even with ruk..his love for begums and beauty was inevitable and one will come across one or two pages at the most about his personal life but what we get to read is his political and expansion of mughal empire in india and him being secular in approach towards other religions!

whether his 9 gems made him or he listened to muz but the ultimate decision was his..he was a good listener but used his brain and far sightedness when it came to making or mending the laws..he lapped up all the good that he learnt from people around him and changed his ways how he looks at life for the betterment of his personal being and awaam..he was a keen learner and here if we claim that someone was a positive influence then yes he did have many people in his life who were a good influence on him and were honest and loyal to him!

he was a good judge of character and got into spiritualism in later life as well...and if we say that the whole credit of him being great goes to muz then i have yet to read that paragraph anywhere..i think he was a workaholic..he only slept 4 hrs..spent most of his time in the battlefield and sometimes accompanied by his harem..but all in all he was a one man army and that is how he is known in history..does not matter what the serial or the movies cash upon but for me Akbar will be more known for his great achievements than love stories and i will measure his capabilities on the extraordinary qualities he possessed and not on how much he loved whom and what time he spent with whom..let his personal life rest in peace and let us all enjoy reading and learning what we can from this great personality who had his flaws and greatness like any great personality would!

and i think his real love was hindustan he was passionate about extending boundaries and working in harmony with the people of hindustan and that is where his secular thinking helped him achieve that harmony to some extent and the laws that he changed which made him great were mended with much thought and consultation rather than abruptly as shown in the serial!

how i wish the cvz should have created a better and a realistic NR that weaved the advices of muz and 9 gems logistically and realistically in changing the administration for better and how i wish polygamy should have been treated with more delicacy and respect rather than making his first wife a monster!

anyway! these are my thoughts on this great personality..may he rest in peace and may his achievements be justified and respected and given the due credit rather than blindly following what the show caters..thank you!

YOUR ARTICLE IS HISTORICALLY AND FACTUALLY FLAWLESS. YES AKBAR THE GREAT WAS KNOWN, NOT FOR HIS LOVE STORIES, BUT FOR THE FOLLOWING -

1. AMONGST THE MUGHAL KINGS, HE WAS ABLE TO EXTEND BOUNDARIES THE MOST. HE FOUGHT THE MOST WARS AND HE CONQUERED THE MOST LANDS AND BROUGHT THEM UNDER THE MUGHAL EMPIRE. UNLIKE JAHANGIR, WHO ALREADY HAD A LARGE EMPIRE TO RULE, AKBAR ACTUALLY MADE HIS EMPIRE FROM SCRATCH.

2. HIS ADMINISTRATIVE ABILITY WAS BRILLIANT. HIS REVENUE COLLECTION SYSTEMS, HIS MANSABDARI SYSTEM AND OTHER STUFF WAS MUCH BEYOND HIS TIMES. HE CERTAINLY WAS A VISIONARY. UNLIKE OTHER MUSLIM RULERS AND PLUNDERERS, HE WANTED TO SETTLE IN INDIA. HE FELT AT HOME HERE AND WAS THERE TO RULE AND NOT ONLY PLUNDER

3. HIS TOLERANCE FOR RELIGIONS ON THE COUNTRY, IN THOSE TIMES, WAS UNPARALLELLED. HE ALSO HAD A GENUINE INTEREST IN ART, MUSIC AND SUCH ALLIED ACTIVITIES. THE FACT THAT HE COULD TAKE TIME OUT FOR SUCH PURSUITS IS ITSELF AN INDICATION OF HIS ASTUTE TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS

WE KNOW ALL THIS ABOUT AKBAR FROM BOOKS AND NOT FROM THE FILM OR THE SERIAL

YES HE HAD A LARGE HAREM AND MANY WIVES. TO THINK THAT HE WAS MONOGAMOUS WOULD BE FUTILE, AND TO ALSO THINK THAT HE BECAME MONOGAMOUS AFTER MARRYING MUZ WOULD ALSO BE EQUALLY FUTILE

JODHA

IN THE AMAR CHITRA KATHA TITLED AKBAR THERE IS A MENTION OF JODHA BAI. THAT SHE WAS AKBARS RAJPUT WIFE. IT WAS AFTER LOSING SEVERAL CHILDREN THAT SHE WAS SENT TO THE ASHRAM OF SALIM CHISHTI TO BEAR HER CHILD WHO WOULD BE THE FUTURE HEIR TO THE THRONE.

ANOTHER FACT ABOUT JODHA IS THAT SHE WAS BURIED CLOSE TO AKBAR, NEAR SIKANDRA. TO ASSUME THAT SHE WAS HIS FAVOURITE WIFE WOULD AGAIN BE A MATTER OF OPINION.

JA FILM AND SERIAL

I LOVED JA THE FILM. THE ACTORS, THE STORY, THE CHARACTERIZATION, THE JEWELLERY, THE SETS, EACH AND EVERY ASPECT OF THE FILM ENTHRALLED ME AND I BECAME A HUGE FAN.

I STARTED WARCHING JA THE SERIAL ONLY COZ OF MY LOVE FOR THE FILM. ALSO A FRIEND HAD PRAISED THE ACTING AND THE SETS AND HENCE I BEGAN WATCHING IT.

IT WAS ACTUALLY MY FIRST EXPERIENCE OF A TV SERIAL IN HINDI COZ EARLIER I HAD ONLY WATCHED STAR WORLD SERIALS

BUT BY AND BY I STARTED LOVING IT AND ACTUALLY BECAME ADDICTED

RAJAT AND PARIDHI WERE STRANGERS TO ME. I HAD NEVER SEEN THEM EARLIER NOR WATCHED ANY OF THEIR WORK. BUT THEY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION, ALONG WITH EVERYTHING ELSE.

ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE SERIAL

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A FIRM BELIEVER OF THE FACT THAT SERIAL WATCHERS AND FANS SHOULD START WATCHING ANY SERIAL AT THEIR OWN RISK. MAKERS ARE NOT LIABLE TO MOULD THE STORY AS PER FANS WISHES. THAT IS WHY THEY SHOW THE DISCLAIMER AT FHE BEGINNING. IN SIMPLE TERMS THE DISCLAIMER IS A WARNING TO WATCHERS, FANS AND ADDICTS LIKE ME AND SEVERAL OTHERS ON THIS FORUM. IT JUST PLAINLY TELLS US TO WATCH THE SERIAL, BUT DONT HAVE AN OPINION ABOUT IT. AND IF YOU DO, REST ASSURED THAT THE OPINION DOES NOT MATTER

SO WE FANS SHOULD NOT GET TOO BOGGED DOWN BY SAD AND SHITTY TWEETS LIKE TO ONE FROM SHAURYA SINGH. AFTER ALL WHAT WE ARE WATCHING IS A STORY AND EVERYONE HAS A SIFFERENT APPROACH TO IT

EXAMPLE

WHATEVER I HAD READ OR HEARD ABOUT RHE TITANIC MADE ME BELIEVE THAT IS WAS A CATASTROPHE. A LARGE SHIP WAS MADE AND IT SANK. BUT THE MOVIE TOOK SUCH A HUGE LEAP AND MADE IT INTO A LOVE STORY

NOW WHENEVER I HEAR THE WORD TITANIC IT CONJURES IMAGES OF LOVE

SO ENJOY THE SHOW. ITS NOT HISTORY, ITS NOT FACTUAL, ITS JUST A STORY

Agreed Adi, however where Akbar's allegiances lay atleast in former part of his rule is an open ended question(atleast to me), reason being although he was born in Umerkot , his parents were not natives of this land...Akbar himself was raised in Kabul and had very little affiliation to India except political, there is no evidence that he considered India his motherland. Not to draw a parallel by Hitler was born in Austria but did consider himself a German and did take over (forced into surrender) Austria.

In all this i do not intend to take away Akbar's accomplishments and yes he did accept Hindustan as his own, and given his predecessors and successors , his rule was by far the golden era of Mughal empire. Dictatorship was the only feasible way to rule an empire as large as his, and his acceptance of natives was as much his higher order intellect as his pragmatism.

The point is now that i am out of EK's bullshit spell am looking at these characters in a very practical and different light, personally am convinced of a non existent epic love with either of his wives, and also his ridiculously exaggerated divine goodness of heart. His life like any other ambitious ruler of his time was as much power as possible - and yes he was smart and daring enough to turn his ambitions into reality. At the end of it he did all that it took - violence , compassion, treachery, intelligence to realise HIS dream of HIS empire - and for that he does deserve respect.

My lovely ladies who all are agreeing with me the sad part is Akbar even though tried hard to be a part of the masses was and is still considered an outsider despite his excellent administrative policies and liberal views and in today's time and age all the corrupt politicians are accepted as they are not outsiders even though they are looting their own country and sending money to foreign banks...if he would have not been successful all the blame would have gone in his kitty and no muz would have shared it since he was more than successful now the credit will go to all except him? Now what sort of fair world is that. .will Ashoka take all the credit for his greatness or will his wife share it for maarg darshan maybe not because he was not an outsider. ..a sad situation indeed where we do not want to open the closed compartments of our mind and let the air in..how i wish we had even an ounce of that religious tolerance quality that Akbar had!

Infact adi, people living in bundelkhand and Bastar region of Chattisgarh are the original inhabitants of this land from the times of Ramayan, I read somewhere - It is another matter their lands are being taken away in the name of development. By this account, I am actually an invader in this land !! 😉
Unilateral declaration of Akbar being a dictator is something I am hearing from the first time. And what's his wrong if he had to be brought up in Kabul as there was a fear of attempt on his life from his own family. By one account the wealth taken by British from India was put as 5 trillion $ - This is a recorded fact.
But Mughal kings built all landmark construction in Hindustan and not in Kazakhastan from where Timurs originated. And we need to remember that Hindustan those days included Afgan, Pak and today's India. So a monument in Delhi, Agra and Kabul itself prove that they are not invaders who loot away and send to their homeland - Infact there is no mention of any of these Kings doing anything in Kazakhastan.
But one thing EK's JA has done , there are n number of versions of Mughal, Akbar and JJ story - I will say like always - To each their own !!
