CHAPTER 3

YAADEN YAAD ATI HAIN

Jodha's residence:

"Tu kal kya pehen ne wali hai Jo?", moti asked her bestie who was in the kitchen, busy making dinner for both.

The day had been a long and tiring one for both of them. Starting with the introduction of the new CEO, followed by the ongoing preparations for the party, the following evening. Moti and Jodha had exhausted themselves completely.

Now, sitting in the dining table in Jodha's house, Moti tried to peep inside the kitchen after getting no reply from her friend regarding the previous question. Getting no success, she stood up and went inside the kitchen to see what was keeping her friend so busy.

"kahan khoyi hui hai?", touching her friend's shoulder to wake her up from her day- dreaming session, Moti asked.

"Huh!! Kuch nahi", was the reply Jodha gave.

"Chal, dinner is ready. Table pe chalte hai", pulling Moti's hand Jodha dragged her to the dining room with the bowl of curry in her right hand, only to keep it in the table and disappear again in the kitchen.

Moti sensed the nervousness in Jodha's voice not only this time but during their car ride together from the office but didn't question her as she was too much exhausted to do so. Moreover, she already knew what answer awaited her, if she had voiced her questions.

"Hey Kanha, kal main kya karungi? Aj toh Jalal jaldi ghar laut gaye isiliye I didn't have to face him again. Par kal kya hoga? Kal toh Salim bhi ayega. Dus saal baad na jane wo kaisa dikhta hai? Bohat bada ho gaya hai zarur", Jodha thought while arranging rotis in the bowl.

"Kaha rahe gayi tu Jo?", Moti's impaitient voice broke Jodha's thoughts and she ran to the dining room with the rotis.

"Aa gayi, chal khana start karte hai, bohat bhukh lagi hai mujhe", without giving Moti a chance to speak, Jodha started serving both their plates with curry and rotis.

Jodha's POV:

No, I can't be lost always in thoughts. Moti ko thoda shaq toh zarur hui hai. Yeh toh accha hai ki usne kuch nahi pucha warna agar puch leti, toh main kya jawab deti? Kisiko yeh baat pata nahi chalna chahiye ki Jalal meri ex- husband hai. I've to be careful from next time onwards.

End of POV...

Two friends continued their dinner lost in their own thoughts. One's mind was filled with questions regarding the unusual behavior of her bestie while the other one's mind was unsure about how to face her past once again.

Thus, they continued their eating and at the end of dinner, Moti bade goodbye to Jodha and went to her apartment.

Jalal's residence:

"dhong... Dhong... Dhong...", three loud beats by the old grandfather clock from the nearby church woke up the sleeping figure on the couch.

Rubbing her eyes, Ruquiaya sat up and looked towards the big clock hung behind the refrigerator on the wall.

"It's three already, Jalal still didn't come. Why is his phone switched off?", thought she.

It had been a long evening for her. First single- handedly arranging for Salim's birthday party as the maid took leave and then the whole evening her gaze continuously went to the gate to see whether he's coming or not. She even checked her phone time and again. But no, not even a single message or call from him came.

"tring...", the door bell ring broke the silence of the room.

Quickly wearing her slippers, she left the sofa.

"Itni raat ko kaun hai? May be it's Jalal!!", realizing that the person behind the closed door can be Jalal, she ran to the door.

Opening the door her eyes went to the figure standing on the other side and almost involuntarily her lips parted and a large gasp escaped her mouth.

Jodha's residence:

Her sleep broke as soon as the first rays of sun fell on her face. The whole night she had a disturbed sleep, with her past coming continuously in front of her eyes.

Flashback:

"Come, chalo mere saath", holding her hand an angry Jalal dragged her along with himself and threw her outside the main gate, in the heavily pouring rain. A moment later, a heavy trolley bag having her belongings was hurled at her by her mother-in-law.

"Maine kuch nahi kiya, mera vishwas kijiye. Ammijaan, aap toh mujhe janti hai na? Aapko lagta hai ki main aise kaam kar sakti hu?", cried a helpless Jodha trying to prove herself innocent.

"Har mujrim pakde jane ke baad yehi kehti hai Jodha. Meri ghar me ek chor ka jagah kabhi nehi ho sakti", answered an angry Hamida Banu. She could never imagine in her dreams that her beloved daughter-in-law is a thief.
