"Jodha Begum, you are pregnant."
The words kept ringing in Jodha's ears as their meaning sunk in. She was pregnant. She was going to be a mother. There was a life growing inside her, a tiny baby that needed her protection, her warmth, her love. Someone solely dependent on her for its own existence. Someone who would complete her life, someone who would bring a smile to her face, someone who she would laugh with, someone she would cry with. Jodha could not measure the happiness she felt when the Hakima told her the news.
She had never been so happy before. The last time she felt she had been the happiest was on her first wedding anniversary, when Jalal had finally let her know what she meant to him, how much she mattered to him. That was the night they had claimed each other, like no other, one year after their marriage. Jodha blushed at the mere passing thought of those passionate moments.
But, now it was all different. The fact that she was going to have a child of her own was so powerful and joyous, that every other seemed to fade away. Flashes of the bright future ahead of her appeared before her eyes - she would hold the baby in her arms close to her heart, forever protecting it from the worldly evils, she would make sure her baby gets the best of everything; education, behavior, manners, art and skill. She would always support her offspring in everything and teach valuable lessons. Nothing could go wrong. She would play with him or her, boy or girl; she would shower her baby with loads of love.
She touched her stomach with her hand. She could feel something. She could sense something different and that broadened the smile on her beautiful face.
Another thought came to her mind. Shehenshah. She would have to tell him. For years, he had been earning for a child. He would be pleased beyond measure. She could just imagine him sitting before her happy that she could give him the joy he had never had before. But, she would tell him privately. It would be their moment. Private. Personal. She was very selfish. He would be the first person to know.
Her reverie was broken by the announcement.
"... Shehenshah Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar tashreef la rahe hain!"
"Ekanth"
Jalal rushed in as the Hakima and other maids were leaving. Barely acknowledging their salute, Jalal almost ran to Jodha's side. She was lying down on the bed, looking tired yet strangely pleased.
"Jodha Begum!" He came to her and sat on the bed, gently placing his palm on her forehead, patting her.
"Are you alright? I heard the Hakima had been summoned? Are you unwell? What happened? What did the Hakima say? It is nothing serious, I hope? Let me ask her myself. You have a very bad habit of hiding things from me. Hakim Sahiba?"
The words rushed out of his mouth. He was extremely anxious about Jodha's health. He hated seeing her on the bed. The last time he had seen her so was when she had drunk the poison to save him. The mere memory of it was so poignant, that he shuddered. Brushing such thoughts away, he was looking at her for any sign of discomfort and abnormality. He could find none. Instead what he saw threw him off his feet, she was pleased and content.
Why would she be happy when the Hakima had come in? He could think of no reason. A wicked smile was playing on his beloved wife's lips, she was teasing him. Is she... Was he? The sudden realization dawned on him, the worry lines on his face were replaced by a smile, a reconfirming smile, and his eyes posed the question that his voice couldn't frame, she nodded confirming his assumption.
Jodha Begum was pregnant. She was going to have a baby. He was going to be a father. Finally, his longing for a child would come true and what made it more pronounced was the fact that Jodha Begum was giving him the ultimate joy that anyone could have ever given him. They were going to be parents.
His eyes filled with tears of joy as he moved forward to kiss Jodha's forhead.
He could not make any coherent response and neither could Jodha, having shared the news with him now. No words were required. None exchanged. The silence conveyed it all.
Jalal held her hand in both of his, conveying how much pleasure and joy Jodha had given him. He could already see the glow in Jodha's face, something he had never seen before - a glow of a mother.
