Chapter 24

After hearing the song from Jodha, Jalaal couldn't help but feel she also has feelings for him. On one side it made him happy and excited but on the other side he wanted to make sure he is thinking right about how Jodha feels. So, now he was determined more than ever before to find out how Jodha truly feels about him.

'If she chose that song on purpose and this was her way of showing her feelings and if that's how she really feels about me then... I will make her mine forever. I will do anything to make it happen if she also wants this, I know we will have to face consequences but first I really need to know for sure what she wants. But how do I find out without jeopardizing our friendship?? I have to find a way!! I just have to!!' his mind played around trying to put all the puzzle pieces together.

This was the first time ever Jalal felt optimistic about their relation. His heart was suddenly filled with hope. That night he came to the conclusion that may be they can be together after all.

On the other side Jodha was confused thinking 'why did he ask why I sang that particular song and when I told him because I like it he was about to say something but stopped in between, what was he gonna say?? Has he figured out that I was singing it from my heart and I mean every word of the song and I sang it because that's how I actually feel. Oh god what if he has figured it out?? How will he react?? Will he get mad at me?? What am I going to do?? What will I say if he asks me again? Why did I sing that song?? I can get in trouble now. Ohhh I really hope I don't get in trouble and he doesn't ask me anything!!' The more she thought about it the more anxious she felt. 'I am driving myself crazy thinking about it, I should stop. Anyways there's a reason for everything and everything happens for good. I have always believed in it and no reason not to believe that now. I should just go with the flow and let things happen however they are destined to.'

Next day at Jodha's house

Jalal couldn't wait to see Jodha...throughout the way he was picturing Jodha's shy face...how she will react after singing this emotional and romantic song. Finally, he reached his destination...his heart was beating fast...he was feeling excited and nervous at the same time...after taking a deep sigh out he rang the bell expecting to see Jodha but unfortunately Jodha's mother opened the door instead of her.

Jalaal immediately shook himself out of the shock and then with well mannered, respectful way he greeted her with a smile.

She welcomed him with smile and pointing towards the room said "Please have a seat Jodha will be right out."

Jalaal wondered why Jodha didn't open the door today!! 'Maybe she's not ready', he thought disappointedly and sat in the room eagerly waiting for her to come.

A few minutes later Jodha came and greeted him but avoided looking straight in his eyes, then shyly in low tone she said "good morning Sir!"

Jalaal looked at her and greeted her back with a big smile. But as he looked at her he noticed she didn't look well, her usual glow was missing, her smile looked forced. He wondered what is the matter with her. He worriedly asked "Jodha, are you okay??"

"Umm ya I'm fine" she paused a bit and then continued "no actually I have a headache possibly because of the toothache that I've been having since last night" said Jodha in cranky tone.

"Why do you have toothache??" asked Jalaal concernedly.

"Why???" she said with irritated tone and with a look on her face, seriously you are asking me why?? After a brief pause...she replied in low tone "Because I'm crazy!"

"Huh?? What does that mean??" Jalaal replied in surprise.

"It's a long story I'll tell you in detail later but in short ... I am being punished for my carelessness" replied Jodha sulkily.

Before Jalaal could ask any further Jodha's mother came in the room with coffee. She offered it to Jalaal and looked at Jodha sitting upset and said "Don't worry we'll go see the doctor in the evening."

Jodha nodded her head in a yes in irritation.

'She must be badly in pain, I've never seen her like this' thought Jalaal sadly.

Soon the class started as everyone else came.

Jalaal thinking 'Why is it that whenever I think about talking to her, something always happens and I'm unable to talk' He felt disappointed but he was also worried seeing her in pain. 'Maybe I'll call her in the evening and ask what the doctor said!'

Jalaal kept looking at Jodha during the class, she was pressing her left temple a lot. He could tell that she was in pain. Her discomfort was clearly visible. She was in so much pain that she couldn't even concentrate in studying. He concernedly asked "Jodha are you okay? If you are not feeling well we can continue this in next class."

Jodha looked at her wristwatch and softly replied "It's okay we are almost done anyway."

After finishing the current topic they were doing Jalaal looked at Jodha with worry, and asked again "Are you okay??"

Jodha smiled at him and replied "I'm okay, I'll be fine once I see the doctor in the evening."

"Okay" Jalaal replied worriedly.

Then he looked at everyone else and asked "What are your plans for the holidays?? Are you all going somewhere or would you like to continue the classes???"

"I am going on vacation with my family" said Meenu.

"So am I Sir" Niti chipped in excitedly.

"I am not" said Jassi.

"Me neither" told Jodha.

"Hmmm okay then that means we can't continue classes during holidays" said Jalaal feeling disappointed.

'Oh no, this means I won't be able to see Jodha during holidays' thought Jalaal sadly.

Then composing himself he informed "So we will have one more class on Tuesday and then we'll start again in January."

"Sure Sir" everyone agreed and with this it was time for Jalaal to leave.

Jalaal reluctantly stood up, he wasn't feeling like leaving Jodha seeing how she was in pain but he didn't have a choice so picking his stuff from the side table he got ready to leave and slowly walked out from there. He turned back as he reached the room door to look at Jodha one last time. She was holding her head and her eyes were close. It was very painful for him to see Jodha in pain but he couldn't do anything about it. With heavy heart he turned and left.

The whole way home he kept remembering Jodha's painful expressions which made him feel even more sad and extremely worried. 'I will call her once I get home and check how she is doing and what the doctor said! But what did she mean when she said "Because I'm crazy", why is she calling herself crazy for having toothache??? She is so confusing sometimes!!'

Jalaal couldn't wait to get home and call Jodha. As soon as he reached home he wanted to call Jodha but saw Bhabhi was busy talking on the phone with one of her relatives and it seemed like they were talking about him, suddenly his ears were alert and he started listening to their conversation...he could tell on the other side someone was inquiring about him for marriage proposal. Jalal got irritated seeing bhabhi smiling and getting excited in the talk. He gave disappointed glance to Bhabhi and walked out of the room to his room. Hearing all these talks, he started to get panicked... he became more desperate than before to know what Jodha is thinking about him. Few minutes later he recalled her painful face... her toothache. So he decided to call her, but he still had to wait for bhabhi to finish her call. After about half an hour he finally got the chance to call Jodha. As he dialed the phone he thought 'I hope she is back from the doctor by now and feeling better.'

"Hello" said Jodha picking up the phone.

Jalaal felt relieved thinking she is back from the doctor. "Hello! How are you feeling now?? Are you feeling better?? What did he say??" He bombarded her with questions.

"Huh?? Sir?? What are you talking about?? What did who say??" asked Jodha confused!!

"The doctor Jodha, what did the doctor say??" Jalaal asked impatiently.

"Nothing I haven't..." said Jodha but before she could complete Jalaal asked surprisingly "Nothing?? He said nothing?? Why?? What kind of a doctor is he??" suddenly Jalaal felt really angry.

"Huh! No, no I meant I haven't been to see him yet" explained Jodha.

"You haven't gone yet??? I thought you already came back from there!! Why didn't you go yet?? Didn't you have to go??" Asked Jalaal.

"Yes I have to go and I will, in fact I have to leave in 10 minutes. I will go to Mumma and then go with her" explained Jodha.

'What is the matter with him? Why is he so hyper and freaked out?? It's just toothache, why is he making such a big deal out of this??' thought Jodha in confusion.

"So what time will you be back??" asked Jalaal.

"I don't know maybe 9, 9:30! Why are you asking??" Jodha replied instantly in crustier tone, more than she intended to.

"That means you can only tell me tomorrow what the doctor said!!" Jalal ignored her tone and asked in disappointing tonel.

"What's there to tell?? He'll check, do some treatment, maybe give me some medicine or something and that's it. No big deal." said Jodha casually but she sounded little irritated with many questions.

"No big deal??" asked Jalaal horrified with Jodha's casual tone.

"Wait, hold please" said Jodha as she heard her mother calling her. "Coming mumma" she shouted and then went back to the phone.

"Hello"

"Your mom's here?"

"Yes, I gotta go."

"I know, go see the doctor and tell me what he said."

"Okay, I will! Bye!!"

"Bye!"

Jalaal wondering

She was in so much pain in the morning and now she's saying 'No big deal', I just can't understand her sometimes!!' He shook his head in frustration. Then suddenly he remembered 'Oh no, I forgot to ask why she was calling herself crazy for having toothache?? I don't know if she is crazy or not, but one thing is sure, that she is certainly making me crazy. I hope she feels better soon. I wish she would call me tonight after coming back to tell what happened at the doctor's, but I know it's difficult...she can't call me this late at night, so I'll have to wait till tomorrow to find out what happened??

Jodha wondering

What was the matter with him?? Why was he so freaked out about my pain and going to the dentist?? He was talking like he had to go see the dentist and bear the torture not me. The way he was talking it made me laugh and I forgot my pain for some time, he is so sweet and too caring... I don't know if he loves me or not but I am sure now, that he really cares about me...she smirked at her thoughts and murmured silently...'I just love him...My first love.'

Suddenly she felt sad thinking he will leave soon and forget her. 'Not much time left now, I hope he at least stays in touch, but then again how would he stay in touch with me?? Emails?? Of course emails how else, I can't expect him to call me from there now can I?? Emails would be the only option if at all he stays in touch, that is. Ooh I will miss him! Will he miss me?? Maybe not! He will get busy with his new exciting life so no need to remember me. But he will stay in heart forever and I will cherish these memories throughout my life.

Jodha came back from the doctor around 9:30pm and wondered if she should call Jalaal and tell him what happened at the doctor. 'He was so freaked out and worried about it, but I don't know if I should call him this late at night. He might not like it and also, what will I tell mumma about why I'm calling him so late?? I think I better tell him tomorrow' decided Jodha.

They both were worried about each other and felt restless that night. Jalaal couldn't stop remembering her painful face and Jodha couldn't stop thinking about how freaked out he was seeing her in pain.

Somehow they managed to survive the night and got chance to talk next day.

Jodha Jalaal on phone

"Hello" said Jodha sweetly as soon as she heard Jalaal's voice.

"Hello!! How are you feeling?? How is your toothache??" Jalaal asked impatiently "I have been waiting since morning to find out" added Jalaal.

"I am fine, much better now" smiled and replied Jodha.

Jalaal felt much relieved hearing her normal voice. 'She does sound much better, thank god.'

"So what did the doctor say?? Why do you have toothache?? And why were you calling yourself crazy for having toothache??" Jalaal asked all the questions in one go, he was too eager to know everything.

"So many questions??" replied Jodha in astonishment.

'He really is worried about me, aww how sweet!' Jodha was in dreamland enjoying his care.

"Jodhaaa, what happened??" asked Jalaal confused thinking why Jodha was not replying.

"Sorry I was thinking something" replied Jodha. "The doctor gave me painkillers along with antibiotic medicine and asked me to come back on Wednesday. And only then he will decide what to do with my tooth."

"What do mean he will decide later what to do with your tooth?? What's wrong with your tooth??" Asked Jalaal not understanding what she means.

"OMG sir...take it easy...I am not dying...it's just a toothache" Jodha giggled, after a pause with serious tone she continued "Okay let me tell you in detail...here's the long version!! I have cavities in my teeth and a couple of weeks ago one of the fillings came out. I should have gone to the doctor to get a new filling done but since the exams were coming I kind of ignored it and thought I'll go later. But before I could decide when to go that tooth started hurting. I didn't know it would be such a big deal if I delayed it for a few weeks, but apparently it is a big deal. So now there's a bit of infection in it and after I finish the antibiotic course he will check the condition of the tooth and decide accordingly" explained Jodha.

"Oh, I didn't know you could get infection in your tooth too" said Jalaal feeling surprised. "But then why were you calling yourself crazy??" asked Jalaal confusingly.

"Oh that! Because I didn't even mention this to mumma, if I had she would have taken me right away as she knew I could get infection. She got mad at me for ignoring this and I was irritated and in pain, so I called myself crazy. Anyway it is kind of my fault, I was careless and now I'm getting punished for being careless" added Jodha sadly.

"Ohhh, uh I have no idea about all these procedures but I hope everything will be fine soon" Jalaal said trying to be supportive.

"What do you mean you have no idea?? You have never been to a dentist??" Jodha asked astonished.

"No I haven't" said Jalaal cautiously, surprised at Jodha's astonished sound.

"Wow your teeth must be super healthy then. I have 4 cavities, well 3 left now! Guess you don't eat much sweets, I love chocolates, hence, the result" giggled Jodha. "Anyway, it's a good thing you never needed to see a dentist, its not fun...you have to sit with your mouth open for so long while the doctor checks your teeth with lots of tools."

Jalaal was just quietly listening to Jodha, all this dentist talk was new for him.

"I'm so sorry you have to go through all this" said Jalaal sympathetically.

"Why are you saying sorry?? I'm the one who ate so many chocolates and sweets. Its okay, first I enjoyed all the sweets and now I have to bear this. Anyway, I am sure he would just do a new filling and that's it, nothing to worry about. I'll be fine." Said Jodha trying to convince Jalaal that all this was not a big deal but she knew it wasn't gonna be this easy.

'I'm sorry for hiding this from you but I don't wanna scare you. I will tell you the worst if and when I know for sure it will happen' thought Jodha sadly.

Monday morning in lab

Jodha reached the lab, as usual she was the last one to enter. She got shocked seeing Jalaal holding their answer sheets. She looked simultaneously at him and the papers in his hands with wide eyes and thought 'He checked the papers so soon? How?? When?? Oh my god, did he take them home to check?? Why didn't he tell me my marks yesterday when we were talking on the phone??' Then she looked around and the whole class seemed freaked out as nobody was expecting to get the results so soon. She looked back at Jalaal and he was smiling at her. She gave him a reluctant smile and sat on her seat.

Jalaal asked the whole class "Why are you all looking at me astonishingly?? These are your answer sheets only, I am done checking them so I thought I'll distribute them but seems like you all were not expecting them so soon!!"

'How could we expect the result today, we were told we won't get the report cards till after the holidays. Why did he check the papers so soon?? Kohli Sir haven't even touched the papers yet and accounts was the first exam we gave. Oh god I hope I got good marks, I don't want him to get mad at me!! This might be the last time he will check our papers before he leaves' Jodha was lost thinking while Jalaal was observing her.

'Why is she always nervous before getting the results?? Usually everyone freaks out before exams and she is the only one who is all composed and calm. But when it's time to get the result she freaks out. She really is different from others.' Jalaal thought and smiled, then he looked around and said "You all did pretty well, I am very satisfied with your results. Don't worry!!"

Then Jalaal started distributing the papers and as everyone received their paper they were relieved as most of them did good.

'Where is my paper??' wondered Jodha. 'Why does he always gives my paper in the end??' Jodha cribbed in her mind.

'So I can do this' thought Jalaal. Then he announced "And now Jodha's paper with the highest marks 67 out of 70" and he handed the paper to Jodha with a big grin and feeling proud.

Jodha smiled and took the paper excitedly and started looking through it.

"Have a look at your papers and we will discuss all the questions over the next two days before the Christmas, New Year holidays start."

After a short pause in serious tone Jalaal said "You all have done pretty well in pre-board and your project files are also ready now, along with the soft copies. I want to tell you all that you all are ready for your board exam. I want to let you all know that some time around the end of next month I will be leaving the school forever. But you all don't have to worry about anything, you guys are all set for your board exam..."

It took few seconds to dilute and suddenly the silence got filled with murmurs and before he could say anything further all the students started panicking and bombarded him with questions...

"Why Sir?"

"Where are you going??"

"Why are you leaving??"

"With board exams around the corner, what will we do if we have questions or problems??"

Jodha was just quietly looking, all her happiness for getting highest marks was gone, her smile got vanished. Jalaal saw her sad face and felt guilty for choosing this moment to announce the news of him leaving and taking away her smile. 'I should have announced tomorrow' regretted Jalaal.

"You all are more than ready for boards, so no need to panic. And if you still have any question, there are other teachers here who will help you, plus I will be available via email, you can ask me any question there and I will definitely reply" explained Jalaal in an attempt to calm everyone down.

"But Sir where are you going??" asked a student.

"I got a job offer in USA and I accepted it, now I am joining there next month" told Jalaal.

"Wow" "wow" many students exclaimed in surprise. Jalaal could hear "wow" coming from all corners of the class. Suddenly the class that was panicking a moment ago, was now in aww, gushing and going gaga over the news.

A smile crept up on Jalaal's lips, he felt relieved seeing them all excited for him. They all congratulated him happily.

"Sir don't forget us all once you leave" said one of the students.

"Of course not" said Jalaal smiling. But his smile didn't last long, as his gaze fell on Jodha his smile faded away. He noticed she was giving a smile but he could see she was trying to hide her sadness.

'He made the news official, he really is leaving' Jodha thought sadly.

The bell rang indicating the end of the period. Jodha quietly exited the class while Jalaal looked on sadly.

'I have got to talk to her, but when should I do it...I can't talk to her in school, neither can I talk at her house and I don't wanna talk about this on phone...but even if I was willing to talk on the phone I am not sure how good an idea this will be, I mean anyone can walk in on her and she can get in trouble or our conversation might get interrupted and I certainly don't want either of that happening!! Talking on phone about this is too risky, unless of course I know for sure no one would walk in on her but how could that be possible. Oh god what should I do?? The time is just slipping through my hands just like sand and I can't do a damn thing about it" Jalaal thought frustratingly.

At Jodha's House on Tuesday

All the girls came early as after finding out about Jalaal's departure next month they decided in school to meet early and plan for a going away party for Jalaal.

Jalaal reached as they all were planning for the party. They fell quiet as soon as they saw Jalaal entering.

Jalaal looked at them in surprise and thought 'how come they all are here today?? Usually they come after me' he quickly glanced at his wristwatch and thought 'no I'm not late, hmm so that means they all are early today. But why?? And what were they discussing which they stopped as soon as they saw me. What are these girls upto??'

"Uhhh good...good evening Sir" said Jodha stutteringly.

"Yes, good evening Sir" everyone else also joined in.

"Good evening" replied Jalaal looking at them suspiciously. "You all are early today, something special?? What were you all discussing??" asked Jalaal.

"Nothing" they all replied in unison.

Jalaal laughed and said "definitely something is going on."

Jodha trying to change the topic quickly asked "Would you like some coffee??"

Jalaal looked at Jodha smilingly and said "sure."

Jodha quickly ran out of the room to get the coffee. On the way to the kitchen 'I hope he didn't hear anything and hopefully the girls won't say anything and spoil the surprise.'

Jodha took the coffee and went back. Seeing Niti discussing some question, she heaved a sigh of relief thinking 'Phew our surprise is safe.'

At the end of the class Jalaal concluded by saying "Today was the last class of the year. Now next class will be next year. Hope you all will enjoy your holidays and have a very happy new year."

"Same to you Sir" they all wished him back.
