Was Ruqaiya Begum Really Responsible for Salim's Addiction to Opium And Alcohol?

In Jodha Akbar serial, Ruqaiya Begum has been shown giving opium, a nasha to Salim. While reel Ruqaiya wants to spoil Salim so that Salim, the son of Jodha and Akbar becomes her puppet, one doubts whether the real Ruqaiya would ever do such a thing to the future Mughal Emperor, even if she hated Jodha tremendously.

Here are some of the reasons why Ruqaiya Begum Could Have Never Attempted Such A Thing and why it is not appropriate to Degrade Ruqaiya's Character Further Only To Keep The Show On...

Ruqaiya was a Blue Blood Mughal Empress

Being the Granddaughter of Babur and a Timurid Princess, she obviously might have craved a son who could become the next Mughal Emperor after her husband Akbar. However, since she couldn't give birth to a heir, and Akbar was only blessed by a son after many years - it will only be a stupid thing to imagine she spoiling the Future Mughal Emperor' which she and her husband waited for so long. Being a blue blood princess and also a childless Begum-E-Khaas even in her wildest dream she wouldn't imagine getting a crown prince addicted to drugs as it may hamper the security of the entire Mughal Khandaan in the future.

Ruqaiya and Salim Shared a Good Relationship

Since, Salim was Akbar's first son who survived after lot of hardships, he was loved and adored by all. Not just his biological mother but also by Akbar's chief wives including Ruqiya Begum and Salima Begum. Salim was everybody's favorite and that is why no matter what he demanded, he always got. Perhaps this universal love in the Palace made Salim haughty and adamant - He knew the entire ladies of the harem would support him, no matter how things turn out.

Ruqaiya Is Praised By Salim in Jahangir Nama

Had Ruqaiya Begum spoilt Salim by giving all sorts of drugs, he would know the fact, sooner or later and would never appreciate Ruqaiya Begum in his autobiography. Contrary to what is shown, Jahangir Nama praises Ruqaiya. Also, if Ruqaiya was involved in spoiling Salim, Akbar would never hand over little Khurram (later Shah Jahan) to Ruqaiya Begum when he was just 6 days old. Neither would have Salim appreciated her love and care towards his son.

She favored Salim, out of love, even when he opposed his own Father

Salim from a very young age was declared as Crown Prince. This made him impatient to sit on the throne. And so he revolted against his own father in order to become the next King. If Ruqaiya had ulterior motives, she would never convince Akbar along with Salima Begum and Maryam Makhani to forgive Salim. It was only love that bonded Salim along with the wives of Akbar, nothing else

Salim's Addiction Is Because of His Own Bad Habits - How Can One Blame his Mother?

Salim's addiction to Opium and Alcohol was out of his own will. To blame Ruqaiya or even his own mother or father is not only insulting them, but also their love and care. Salim is himself responsible for all his negative habits.

It should be noted that though the serial might portray Ruqaiya in a negative light, it is only a fictional aspect of the serial. She feeding Salim with opium in his milk and laddoos can only be fictional!

Yes salim addiction is his own fault
he only admits in jehangirnama he was 18 years and lost and without food and water for long time so one of his commander gave him wine to drink. Salim drank liked and drank again till he was drinking 20 cups a day. So its his own making only. May be if Akbar had sent one of his mom to be with him in war field to keep an eye on him then he would not get addicted.
Akbar's 2 other sons daniyal and murad also died of addiction only. Kids especially teenagers get easily influenced if mom-dad not around to keep eye.
And then apart from these influences these princes were bored of daddy controlling every aspect of their life right from what they do, to whom they marry, to everything. So they thought life is better if we are in constant naasha only to forget daddy and his orders. Its typical teenager rebellion that went to extreme lengths and add to that not so great friends and chamchas to mislead you and keep you addicted to get benefits for themselves out of you. If you are not addicted you shall start using own brain and not listen to these free loader friends.
Further compounding the issue is sibling rivalry he got more commands, he became governor of bigger province, dad listens more to him than me etc etc
Akbar also did not help matters by giving preference to one son over others Salim till adulthood then giving preference to daniyal when salim got addicted etc it was literal musical chairs only. Salim thought dad loved daniyal and murad more than him, murad and daniyal thought salim got more preference etc one big kichdi of human emotions and relationships and all were totally confused of what was expected of them or who was most favoured etc all insecurities led to them drowning their fears in more wine and opium.
Salim and his brothers addiction had many angles and aspects to it. It was a big melting pot of fear, insecurity, not understanding father's expectations, not having the capacity to meet father's expectations, bad friends and screwing relatives etc it all led to one addiction after another.
