I didn't know quite what to call this take ... hence the cryptic title
I know the show is at a sad phase ... the death of the twins is hanging, the sadness of Jodha and Jalal is hanging, and even worse the curse is hanging ... but we all know Jodha and Jalal will come out stronger for this ... as in the end of the day, a curse can only be a manifestation of destiny ... but not be a driver of destiny. Just read these verses:
These two unique pearls of the ocean of holiness, returned to the ample domain of the other world after one month. They flung down the coin of their lives for their father. H.M. felt grieved at the departure of those two early fruits, but trod the pleasant path of acquiescence and resignation, for to the farseeing there is no remedy save submission and resignation against the inevitable Divine decrees.
And in the end, this is the journey of realization and evolution that matters. So, let us today celebrate the journey till date of Jalal ... in Tamil.
Because it is Anjali's (harrybird) birthday this week and I had told her I would do a Tamil song post for her ...and so here it is a little late, but still for your birthday my Anjali, Anjali Pushpanjali π€
So, here it goes, starting from where it all started
1. One of my favorite songs is Kalyana Malai ... from the movie Pudhu Pudhu Ardhangal (New Meaning) composed by the maestro Illaiyaraja.
The song starts as follows
Kalyana Malai Kondadum Penne
Oh girl, celebrating her wedding
Enn Paatai Kella Unmaigal Sonnen
Listen to my song and you will learn some truths
And no, I am not singing it for Anjali (she is too smart even for meπ) ... and no, I am not imagining Jalal singing it for Bakshi Bano π ...
But there is one line in the song that begins ...
Azhagaana manaivi, Anbaana thonaivazhi ...
A beautiful wife, a loving companion
And the singer in that movie, as he sings these lines, chokes up... As he reflects that his own life was empty of this though he was married ... And such was the life of Jalal. Full of people, yet empty of companionship. I still remember that moment when Jalal looked out alone from his balcony window, when Hamida Bano walks in and tells him that there his life will one day find that in someone ...
And indeed he did find that companion ... he found Jodha and that one look changed his life. The day he saw Jodha, and she saw him.
2. Nee partha parvai oru nandri ...
Thank you for that one look you gave me
Another immortal composition by Illaiyaraja (it is one of Anjali's favorites as well so how could I leave out π³) from Hey Ram... and that one look changed Jalal's life ... as he was determined to marry her ...
And in the early days of the marriage ... there was initial hate but truly and surely it melted into attraction ... after the hatred reached its height in the Ruquaiyya Miscarriage track and then Jodha reaching the brink with her attempted suicide ... finally, Jalal had to face that he cared for Jodha ... and with the Mohan (tiger) episode saw early glimpses that Jodha cared for him as well ...
And then started the phase of love ... shades of love, of course starting with Jalal's favorite shade
3. Pachai Niramai , Pachai Niramai (The shade of Green) ...from the movie Alai Payuthe (Waves) ... by A.R. Rahman (The title song of Saathiya) in Hindi
Green has always played a special role for the Jodha-Jalal love story ... the Green dress that Hamida Bano gifted Jodha the day of their Mughal wedding, the famous "push-pull" that happened later, the divorce offer that ended with a distinct I like Green, keep wearing it, and of course, the Green dress she wore for him during Sukanya's wedding π³
However, their love had multiple shades as it goes onto describe all the shades that Jalal experienced with Jodha ... the red of anger to the the white of peace (who can forget the day before Holi, in Meena Bazaar, when Jalal gifted Jodha the white dupatta, only to have her colored pink by her herself ... our Jodha is smarter than we think π)
And then over time, the attraction became something stronger ... where there eyes spoke more than anything else.
4. Mounamae paarvaiyaay pesi kondom ... is a beautiful, lesser known song that describes how The look of silence speaks ... as did the looks of silence between Jodha-Jalal speak volumes.
The song is from the movie Anbe Sivam by the music director Vidyasagar, who I feel is one of the more underrated music directors. Please check this song out!
That was a beautiful phase of silence that started with Angoori Bhaag and the Badal-Kajri track ... where only eyes were enough to speak dialogues between Jodha and Jalal.
And then there love grew stronger, till they were inseparable.
All of us remember that endearing morning after scene.
5. And the perfect song to describe that moment
Innum Konjam Neram Iruntha Thaan Enna
If you stay a little longer, what will happen
Yen Avasaram Enna Avasaram Nillu PonneWhy the hurry, stay back
Another more recent song by A.R. Rahman from the movie Maryan ... that describes how much Jalal did not want Jodha to leave him ... and it is a scene we have scene much a time.
So, that was a special take for the weekend ... for Tamil song lovers, hope you enjoyed and please share your favorite Tamil songs. But, hopefully, it was an enjoyable journey down memory lane for all.
Would love your thoughts on the take, the journey, the songs, and perhaps, more importantly the journey moving forward!
