That is because husband is away 9 months a year so his wives/cocubbines would have affairs with other men(yes its true) so sometimes they would get pregnant and say to emperor/king this is your child. Then that child shall become a emperor/king who is not his family and heir. those days there was no DNA test to prove paternity. So instead this way they kept track of whether baby is their's or some other guys.

I doubt akbar ki kabhi waat lagi thi jaise serial mein dikhaya he was very clever to be fooled like jehangirrr. No wife/cocubbine shall have spine to fool akbar the great.

I doubt akbar considered all 300 as wives and 1000 cocubinnes as partners. He will have few favourites wifes and cocubbines whom he liked and visit only that many often. Others remain spinsters for life although married usually.

There is one more story i read after Jehangir became emperor he told his finance minister to increase the yearly salary to all his mothers. After 3 months he was reviewing finance and almost a crore spent on his mothers(Akbar's wives). Jehangir got shock how come i have only around 50-100 mothers no he asked? So it must be some lakhs not this much in crore.

So the minister told him Sir your father has 300 wives and 5000 cocubbines their allowances raised as you told sooo it goes into crores. Jehangir was shocked he have so many mothers and then he made distinction senior mothers etc grade system and only senior mothers got lakhs of rupees as allowance per year. 😆😆 warna Mughal sultanat ka ek-do saal mein hi diwala nikal jatha 😃😆

Jehangir got such a shock after that(that he had so many mothers, cocubbinee mothers etc and has to give crore in allowances) he said no building any building, places etc no architecture. I will build only gardens phool pathon ke liye paisa kaam lagtha hai. 😆😆😃
