I LOVE the character of Ruqaiyya. I too, like all Ruqaiyya fans , first fell in love with Ruqaiyya after seeing Smiley play Ruqaiyya.
She managed to bring such subtle layers to Ruqaiyya that she begun to fascinate me & suddenly!
... I didn't want Jodha anywhere on the Scene. All I wanted was for Jalal to reciprocate her intense yet silent Love for him, for him to read the longing in her eyes & preserve her self-respect, her identity as a woman which was so naturally & completely bound by Jalal's.
But she still possesses all the Hope of Youth with the Entitled Arrogance of Mughal Royalty.
But of course I knew that Jodha HAS to come & steal away Jalal.. Which is why I feel EK had her replaced. People had un-consciously, begun to favour this Ruqaiyya with Jalal & then what would've happened to her Epic Romance?
Another reason why I feel I am sure that Lavina is made to act in such a loud,screechy & almost one-dimensional manner... So that viewers sympathies by default are routed towards Jodha! And it works like a charm , does it not. 😉
Ruqaiyya for me is the one who is trapped. Trapped in a situation, trapped in a relationship, in a marriage with a man that she has come to cherish, come to love passionately & madly, despite her trying NOT TO.
Despite Jalal's repeated , by turns, angry, fierce, subtle, mellow, sad ,declarations of not having a heart, of not believing in Love.. And so Ruqaiyya plods on ,believing the same... And yet, somewhere.. SOMEWHERE, she does not believe so. She knows that within Jalal there beats a heart, but with the naivete of Love, she presumes that if he did, it would belong to her. How can it not? When she has been his life-long & most faithful Companion since childhood?
If I step in Ruqaiyya's shoes , this is what I would feel -
Anger towards Jalal. For not giving me his heart, for taking me completely for granted, for not understanding that my love for Position is somehow, far more intrinsically attached to him than probably anyone, but he, will understand.
Bitterness towards him for cheating me of that very deewangee that I always craved for, yet did not know, but know now.... Towards myself for not letting my relationship stagnate by knocking my head to believe something that I never really did believe - That Jalal has no dil.
Self-loathing, self-pity.
This is what I feel Ruqaiyya would feel & is feeling.
If I was in her place, I would want to burn down the palace, Agra, and everyone who lives there
. I would feel angry; painful anger towards Jalal for DENYING ME what was MINE!
How could he? Can he not see that all these years I've believed a Lie? For his sake? For our relationship? For our Love?
Without realising that it wasn't 'ours'. It was just Mine.
The advantage of having a Painful Heart-Break where your lover leaves you, or cheats on you, are incredibly hard to deal with. But there is always the assurance of a New Day, of a New Beginning.
But, there are far quieter heart-breaks that occur , the kind that take place , every-day, and yet , we don't talk about them or let any-one know.
The kind that fester within, and naturally, cause the heart to ache & the eyes to shed little rivers. The kind where we have to see our Beloved, crying.. But those tears, that pain, that anguish & fear isn't really for me. They are for Her. The Beloved is a Lover, just not mine. 😊
Where does One go from those sort of Heartbreaks?
This , is what awaits Ruqaiyya.
What makes it far more painful & far more painfully difficult for her, is that she doesn't have the advantage of speed, of running away. Where does One run, from One's own family?
Jalal will be very sensitive. By turns, caring & loving.. Which would make it even more painful.
You can hate & harm the Bad, but how can One turn away from the Good?
