I think the popularity of Sikhism today owes some due to Akbar. Remember in his time Sikhism was a new religion. It was facing hostility from both radical Muslims and Hindus.The enthusiastic support of Akbar for Sikhism through his visit to Guru Amar Das Ji , donation of land for the Golden Temple etc was very beneficial for Sikhism. It increased considerably the stature of the Sikh Gurus and allowed Sikhism to flourish.
