Chapter 4

Jodha prepared a sumptuous feast for her devar, much to Jalal's dismay. He sat in the dining chamber with jalal, hamida, gulbandan jiji anga. Ruqaiya and salima were present whilst Jodha served him lunch.

Hakim - wah subhan allah Jodha bhabhijaan - kamaal kar diya, kya swadisht bhojan hai - jee chahe toh aapki haath choomloo.

The others laughed but jalal was consumed with envy.

Jodha - toh aur lijiye devarji, yeh sab aapke liye, suna hai ki aap kheer bahouth pasandh hai. Yeh badam wala kheer lijiye.

Hakim polished off every bit whilst jalal's mouth salivated. He loved kheer especially when jodha made it.

Hakim - Jodha bhabhijaan - you have satisfied my soul, the food was infused with your love; I could eat food cooked by you every day.

Jodha - agar yeh baath, toh agya dijiye, aap meri devarji hain, khaas hai, isiliye agar aap hamari banai hui khana itni pasand hain toh hum roz aap keliye khana banayenge.

Jalal - burning with jealousy he shouted nahin - bilkul nahin

Everyone looked shocked, jalal realized what he did, recovering he said in a lighter tone

Arre begam jodha yeh kaise ho sakte hain, yeh mera bhai hain, roz apne bhai ke liye daawat aur jashn hogi aur hum yeh sab intezaam kar diya

Jodha - understanding jalal's reaction she said -teek hain lekin kheer toh banna sakte hain.

Hakim - bhabhijaan ki jai, waise bhabhijaan aapko koi jurwaa bahen hain kya joh bilkul aap jaise

Jodha - aap aise kyu poochti ho devarji

Hakim - humara nikaah abhi tak nayi hui naa, isliye he said winking at jalal.

Jalal - agar yeh devar bhabhi ki baath katam ho, to chale he said looking sternly at hakim

Hakim planned to stay only two weeks in Agra - he was on a special mission here, unknown to everyone else, except Atgah sahab.

A grand jashn was organized for hakim's arrival, jokers, singers, poets from all parts of the country were summoned. Hearing of Hakim Mirza's arrival from Kabul, Benazir withered in fear, feigning illness she begged to be excused from the jashn.

The night passed off very well, with all enjoying the jashn. All the ladies of the harem especially enjoyed meeting hakim mirza, he was jovial, free spirited, maybe not as handsome as jalal, but there was love and kindness on his face. He was instantly drawn to his Jodha bhabhijaan, such a humble, loving personality, the beauty of her soul showed on her angelic face. He insisted on personally escorting his three special bhabhi's to their respective chambers. He noticed Ruqaiya had not changed much but being his eldest bhabhi he was polite. He was more carefree with Salima and he loved Rahim. Joking along the way he bade ruqaiya a restful night since her chambers came first. After extracting a promise from Salima begam to recite one of her poems to him tomorrow he also bade her good night. Next was jodha chambers - jalal had been walking behind all four of them watching hakim's antics with his special wives.

Hakim - lagta hai ki jalal bhaijaan hum par shakh hai jodha bhabhijaan

Jodha - aise kyun kehte hain?

hakim - dekhiye naa voh humare piche piche aah rahe hain

Jodha - smiling broadly haan yeh toh unki swabhav hai,

Jalal fumed at how well jodha got along with his brother

hakim - lijiye jodha bhabhijaan aapke hojre mai agaye. Kal hum aapke sath voh purana mandhir aur masjid joh aapne phir se teek bana diya dekna chahte hain. Shubh ratri bhabhijaan.

Jodha - arre vah aap humari baasha main bolthe hain, hume bahouth acche laga. Shabba khair devarji.

Watching jodha's and Hakim's interaction stung jalal, jodha never made any attempt to wish him good night in urdu, hearing her say shabba khair so eloquently, the words rolled off the tongue so innocently yet to the lover in him there was a sensual passion in it. If their relationship was not so strained, he would have carried her off and kissed her senseless.

Jalal spent yet another restless night in his chamber, his thoughts with Jodha as usual, the queen had made her way into his heart, she was the life breath coursing through him. Jodha's chamber was directly opposite Jodha's , unable to sleep he went to the window. He saw Jodha also at the window staring up into the star lit sky, why was she still awake he wondered. It was rather late for her to be up, thinking to himself he decided to go to the chambers to check if all was well. Forbidding the guards to announce his arrival he entered the hojra. He overheard Jodha's conversation with Moti

Jodha - moti tum rakjumar hakim ko kaisa laga?

Moti - aacha hai, Shahensha jaise sundar nahi, lekin dil to saaf hai

Jodha - moti sundar chehra ka koi mol nahi, lekin sundar man param avashk hain, haa yedi dono hain toh voh kismet wali hai. Mujhe devarji acche lage hain, voh hum itni izzat ke saath pesh kar rahe hai. Ammijaan koh kitna pyaar aur maan de rahe hai, shahnesha se bhi behetar.

Moti - Jodha please don't compare the two brothers.

Jodha - kyun nahi, joh saach hain, tum use chupa nahi sakte. He tmade attempts to know about our culture and traditions and see how well he greeted me, even speaking in our language. Ammijaan tells me that he has many Rajput alliances and friends. Itni hasmukh hai, uske saath baath karna, aacha laga hain hume.

Jalal could take it no longer; he felt hurt, jealousy coursing through his veins. His brother had not spent even a full day in Agra and here jodha begam was already singing his praise, comparing him to Hakim. She calls him devarji with so much respect and love although he is younger than her.
