and of course harem politics mariam uz zamani must have been very shrewd and manipulative to survive in that deadly place
he had 300 wives and 5000 cocubbines and they would try their best to attract the emperor and try their best to kill the other woman's child from emperor because that will make her privileged. So Jodha's palace had rajput men gaurding it all the time(yes men guarded it). Jehangir mentions that in his palace rajput men guarded and he felt they were invisible because he was used to them from childhood.
i read if some woman dies they would not have funeral or mourning and woman would be shifted to the mourge and from there to burial.
Only important queens, mother, fav aunts and fav sisters had proper greiving and funeral ceremony in agra fort all others no one bothered when they died or to grieve for them 😕 indeed many would know after funeral that person died unless he was very important.

Tfs! 😊

Btw, I read that Rajput men and porters used guard at the gates of the harem and did not enter it. Then there are successive circles of women guards and eunuchs.

In the sixteenth century, all the rulers had many wives. Forget about rulers, even noblemen had many wives - be it mughal, rajput or from any other clan.

May be this badhshah had beaten other rulers in his no. of wives😉, but polygamy and keeping concubines was natural for any ruler.

In fact, in 18th century and early 19th century Bengal, men from upper caste i.e. Brahmins or Kayasthas used to have 100s of wives. And they were not even rulers or noblemen. Even poor or middle class men of upper caste used to marry many women and they used to visit their wives once in a blue moon. The wives lived in their own parents house.

Daulat Shad was a concubine...Not a queen in literal sense as RB,SB or JB...It was a Muttah alliance ...not a Nikaah...(BTW all his nikaahs after the 1st 4 were actually illegal as per Islamic law) and it was a part of the Delhi Royalty revolt submission plan...anyhow, it happened much later...in his middle age...

actually mughal soldiers gaurded outside like they show in serial standing
but inside apartments were rajputh gaurds once akbar started trusting them. before that it was eunch gaurds gaurding harem. maids is a different system.
its mentioned that 4 gaurds always stayed with akbar, jehangir, jodha or all close family always to protect them. these gaurds changed every 4 or 8 hours. there was one book on how harem and palace ran they mention all this.
in serial they show when akbar alone gaurds are inside his bedroom also with him
they never left emperor and his family alone (like important queens, children, kings mother) because always there is a danger of attack inside fort also. i guess akbar devised this system looking at all those attempts on his life and so many kids dying without real reason .

@ bold

It didn't happen in Akbar's middle age. It happened only a year after he married Harka Bai, Princess of Amer.

If you see the list provided by mypremview, the beautiful former wife of Abdul Wasi was Akbar's seventh wife whom he married in 1563.

Also, I read that Akbar made sure that the Ulemas and the Maulavis gave equal status to all his wives, including those who were married through Muttah marriage.

Because of Akbar's order, some clerics started to research and they did find a loophole( ie. writings supporting muttah marriage) in some book and the Emperor ordered that Ulemas should give equal status to all his wives based on these findings. Ulemas had no other option but to oblige.😉

I don't remember the details. It is written in detail in H.C. Burke's book.
