As for romantic love, it is far rarer than it is made out to be, and also less important for the strength of a relationship than loyalty, affection, caring and trust. For one thing, contrary to popular fiction, it almost never lasts very long at the original level. What Ruqaiya has right now with Jalal is, as I had noted, far stronger than romantic love. She would not, I feel, be jealous of Jodha's looks, or even if Jalal falls in love with her, so long as she, Ruqaiya, is the one who is closest to his mind. But when that is threatened, she will hit back, and as she is very intelligent and knows Jalal inside out, she will be a formidable opponent.

Ahh but this show is all about romantic love ultimately...lol...that is the saga Ekta wants to sell here, even if she isn't glossing over the not so noble parts of Jalal's life.

I agree with the points you've made in bold otherwise...Ruqaiya is indeed the closest to his mind...but then that is the whole twist in this story...Jodha will rule his heart...and then it will come down to a battle b/w the heart and the mind.

I'm not sure if Ruqaiya is content with just being closest to his mind...I think she would like to win his heart as well...maybe at this point she is content for she feels Jalal isn't capable of more than that and has given all that he could give in terms of affection and regard to her...but when she sees him with Jodha and the contrast in feelings there, I think she will feel some kind of pangs.

The whole premise of the story currently is that Jalal is "heartless" and incapable of romantic love in that sense...and that Jodha will change all this...a transformation in Jalal then is inevitable.

Ruqaiya is in love with the current version of Jalal...she will have a lot to adjust with a changed version...lol...and yes I definitely agree that if threatened, Ruqaiya will be a very formidable opponent...poor Jodha...as if Mahamanga herself wasn't enough to deal with...lol

Which again begs the question...how comes there aren't power clashes b/w Mahamanga and Ruqaiya for control over Jalal?😆

Rendering me into a thirsty voyager who longs for the soothing breeze of your words, I salute you. A gratitude for indulging us all with your beyond brilliant take.👏

Agra , a city much favored by the Mughals, it has lived eons and witness many grandeur, the old city must be amused to s,ee the current world leaders pay their obligatory visit to Taj Mahal when they descent on Indian soil. But I am sure none loved her as Jalal, the Great Emperor. The streets , the palaces all bore a mark of a prosperity. A little note on the excited air , where eunuchs relayed the Emperor's journey to the harem dwellers, surely the son returned to his mother. For now the atmosphere was in complete contrast with the Rajputana, it will be quite a sight to observe Jodha challenge/adapt to the Mughlai society.

Bharam Khan and Maha angha- Oh this one is a very delicious battle, a widow taking on an old general. An observation, when Jalal marched, MA was a step behind him while Bharam Khan was relegated after her, showed the current political equation of Agra throne. Yes,Bharam Khan has been pushed further and would eventually be dismissed as well but it is very amusing to see in an era where even the women wanted to bear a male child, there was a widow who defeated the great general without raising a single sword. I feel Bharam Khan's problems lie in the fact that he is too old school, he has been the Chief political and Defence personnel far too long that he hasnt recognised Jalal as an Emperor fully yet, he considers him as a child in whose name he won multiple battles. MA wants to be the closet to Jalal, she knows thats where the power lies while Bharam Khan wants to control Jalal to gain that power, thats where he looses the battle.

Hamida Begum and Maha Angha- And that is what MA wanted all along, being the Mother and the only one in whose presence even the Great Emperor will bow his head, thats her greed. So, even while be particular of the court decorum , she knowingly took the right of a mother, and fed Jalal the sayyiyas. Letting both the Hamida Begum and the courtiers know just how much she influence she has on Jalal. But loved the grace with which Hamida handled the situation, retorting that irrespective of anything she will always be the dayyi ma not the mother who gave birth to Jalal, Like a true royal who has seen and battled many political adversaries she fought back like a Queen Mother should, yes she is shaken but I am sure as more time she spends with Jalal slowly and surely she will gain much love and respect from her son.

Props to MA for using one event and sending warring signals to two of her biggest foes. She was some woman indeed.

Ruqaiya Begum, what a brilliant lady, much like a younger Maha Angha. From the way she sipped that hookah to the slow walk to catch jalal's eyes and letting the rest of the harem women know that they can never have his attention like her. And the chess move, major pros to the Production house and Ekta for that scene, it showed the true regal splendor of those days, she knows so well that its not the scented perfume or scrubbed skin that holds Jalal's attention but its the wits and brashness that intrigues him. And that dialogue, she lost her heart and gained him, sums up their equation. Its so very " Les Liaisons dangereuses", they both enjoy the manipulations and scheming . They are very much in sync, and dare I say, considering this current Jalal I wouldn't hesitate but call Ruqaiya as his soul mate, both are brilliant, vindictive and with a touch of coldness, they like to own things so very similar hence they were always friends first. While Akbar would be Jodha's soulmate a man who will learn from her that there is more in life than winning , he will eventually loose to Jodha and thats where ,I feel his relationship with Ruqaiya will shift, he will give regard but they will become ideologically different and thats where a Maha Angha Part 2 will emerge from Ruqaiya. Ah the women of that century, they were somethings for sure, there is a reason why they remain as popular as their husbands such a departure from the Gupta and Maurya dynasties.

A minor issue- Jodha saying that Amer's king will be happy to know about the upcoming birth of his "grandson" was in a bad taste not faulting Jodha but the entire womenfolk they were so conditioned that even with all their brilliance and valor they still considered themselves as the second citizens of earth.

The harem politics will be fun to watch, i guess they all tried fighting for attention so as to taste a slice of power that was denied to their gender. in a parallel world I see Jodha, Hamida Bagum, Ruqaiya Begum and MA sharing drinks and playing cards while bitching about their husbands.

I am really hopeful about this Ekta show, the little subtle hints, it has a chance to finally break a ground with so many strong and smart women

Apt analysis!Yet again! 👏

It is to be noted that contrary to Bairam Khan's unfortunate tendency to overreach himself, Mahaam Anga is always very careful to pretend, quite ostentatiously, to stay within the role of Jalal's Daima. For example, before complying with Jalal's desire to drink the sevaiyyaan only from her hand, she looks across at Hamida Banu Begum for her assent. It is here that her superior tactics stand out, for Jalal would be convinced that she is being all that is proper, besides being apparently ready to die for him, and that is all that counts!

I noticed that too!So the director does believe in attention to detail afterall.

This was one scene;another scene was in the rescue mission episode. When jodha places a sword on his neck and questions him.He gives acutting reply, but then immedaitely bowed down!

she notes Agar main uski ma hoon to aap bhi to uski daima hain

Very well put.Wasn't it? I must say,the first few episodes, the technical team did tremble. But now,i can definitely say, they have made a MASSIVE improvement.

Ruqaiya and Jalal.

Such an interesting bond.Very intelligently shown, might i say.

For Ruqaiya Begum is that rara avis, a woman who can hold not just a man, but an emperor, effortlessly.

Couldn't have described it in a better way! 👏

I particularly liked the way the eye-lock was shown 😆 She saw to it that he doesn't look at anyone else, even as she she walked right past the others! Now,that show teh sort of control she had over him!

Its this thing about men, which holds good even now.The more you run after them, the more they run away! 😆 Stop running and they'll end up running behind you 😆

As all the other begums tried gaining his attention,he very politely ignored them and made way towards Ruqaiya's chamber. 😳

I for one found it wonderful that someone like Jalal could relate so well to a woman, treating her as a confidante and an equal. I do not know if he loves her, whatever that might mean, but what they share is something even stronger than romantic love.

Exactly. Its beyond just 'love'.I just feel their relationship is just so beautiful,so delicate as they've known each other since they were kids and yet so strong because they have known each other since they were kids!

And honestly,i don't understand why all the haala-loo about all those women being shown. Its a known fact. Moreover, they were only shown.Jalal clearly doesn't pay much heed to them!He hardly does.
Its only Ruqaiya he cares about. As for rest of them are,as you said 'trophy wives',well,he would care more about the guard he killed in the kaaragarh 😆 you know hat i mean 😉

I love reading your posts! I had been checking the forum every 5 minutes or so after the episode aired to see if you had a new post and of course the minute I see your new post, I get called by my mom. So here I am after 2 hours, having finally read your amazing post. Thanks! 😊
Ruqaiya is definitely an interesting character. The way she was sitting, smoking the hookah, and not running after Jalal like the others, but instead waiting for him to come to her... She is going to be entertaining to watch!

My dear Sorcha,

This is very flattering, but also rather alarming.

I do not at all want you to be getting frustrated because my post does not appear, or till it does; I would feel guilty about that. I cannot post after every episode - it might not be interesting enough, in the sense of offering material for analysis, like the one of Tuesday. Morever, my dear, it takes me till very late, around 2 am, to finish any post, as I can start only after 11:30 pm or so. I am not a fast typist, and editing the draft to polish it up often takes as long as the initial typing. I simply cannot do it any faster. Then again, I have my own preoccupations; I was a professional diplomat for 38 years like I retired recently at 60, and I still maintain an active interest in international affairs, This is a new and entertaining hobby, and I love it, but what with the posts and replying to all those kind enough to comment on it, my wonky left wrist is already beginning to complain vociferously!!

So, while I will try and cover all the interesting episodes, do not look for me till 2 am IST. I do not know where you are, obviously to the west of India, but you can adjust the time accordingly, and then you will not have to check every few minutes.

This said, I am delighted to be looked forward to! And yes, Ruqaiya is something else again. I hope she continues to get plenty of footage.

once again a really beautiful and insightful post

i am finding ur posts as interesting as the episode itself

both mahamanga and ruqaiya have many similarities they both know jalals weekness and utilise that to have a position in his life thats above others, mahamanga knows how he deep down yearns for motherly love so uses that to bind him to her and ruqaiya uses her brains to challenge jalal instead of her beauty as jalal has many other beautiful wives

Disha dear,

If I were to comment on your comments, I would merely end up agreeing with every line, so I will desist! Please consider it done. I am flattered to have my posts analysed in such loving detail!

I particularly liked your reference to Jalal in the jail; he always stays in character, head bowed and eyes down, right from the time the palki is set down. It must have been very difficult for one used all his life to commanding implicit obedience, but he had the self-control needed to do it. Lovely.

As for getting men to run after you by not running after them, that holds true in any age, but one more thing is needed. That is the IT factor, the indescribable attraction that makes men gravitate towards you. It is not just what is nowadays called sex appeal, which is a more commonplace, largely physical factor. It is some sort of personal magnetism, that, like presence and charisma, cannot be learnt. It just has to be there. Ruqaiya has it in spades!

I too am a Harry Potter aficionada, and as soon as I spotted her chessboard, I thought of the Chamber of Secrets and the board there, but the exact parallel is the chessboard in the palace at Fatehpur Sikri. You can see it still if you go there.

A delightful read👏👏👏 There is a constant tussle between bhairam khan and mahamanga...a momentary lapse, and their game is over...as of now, mahamanga is slightly ahead of ' khan baba'...

The way mahamanga claims her territory in front of Hamida begum is good enough to wreak havoc on a mother's heart...at this point, Hamida begum is just a helpless mother...

Jalal-ruqaiya equation is a complex one...I am still confused about it...😕

Harem- that's how the things were in those times...it's nothing but the truth...
