Yes Kathak is a distinct dance form...actually every dance form is unique in its own way. In Kathak, I noticed that there is not much use of the space/stage...as in it's dancing while standing mostly. In Bharatanatyam, there are more movements and bending to do. Also in Bharatanatyam, expressions and eye movements are very important. There is a difference between Mujra and Kathak as well. I think people are confusing the Kathak salami with Mujra. These two are very different 😊

Was that Kathak in the song from Umrao Jaan? I thought it was more like a combo of Mujra and Kathak. Many of the songs in Bollywood are like that...neither pure Kathak nor pure Mujra...

Now that I think of it, Sanaya's steps were partly Kathak...not fully. Am I making any sense? I don't think so

that's why its called semi-classical..NOT PURE CLASSICAL..pure classical would b very difficult for non-dancer to attempt also like shahid said it takes yrs still u dont get perfection..

Agreed...people learn them for years and still cannot perfect them. And here it's only one week or maybe even less 🤔

I've heard in Indian movies none of the classical dance forms shown is pure classical be it Hindi or southern movies, they are either semi-classical or they just wear the costumes and perform something else

I googled 'Mujra' and it says Mujra originated during Mughal era by courtesans. It incorporated elements of Kathak dance onto music like thumris and ghazals
