2nd season of celeb dance show 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja' begins Sep 28

New Delhi, Sep 20 : After a gap of nearly a year, another season of television shows featuring celebrities in their new 'avataar' as dancers is all set to send audiences all over India in thrall!

Close on the heels of Star Network announcing launch of third season of its dance reality show 'Nach Baliye', the Sony Entertainment television today announced the launch of second season of its celebrity dance show 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja'.

An Indian version of the highly successful US show 'Dancing with the Stars', a unique concept which pairs big celebrities not known for their dancing abilities with professional choreographers in a dance competition, 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja', in its second season, will feature celebrities like Indian Idol host Mini Mathur, famous dancer and TV actress Sodha Chandran, Punjabi Pop Singer Mika Singh, 'Bakra Boy' Cyrus Broacha, Music Director Aadesh Srivastava and former Indian Hockey Coach Mir Ranjan Negi.

To be aired from September 28 every Friday and Saturday at 9 pm, 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa II' will see these celebrities with ''two left feet'' swirl and master different kind of dance forms - from rumba to salsa, cha cha to waltz and jive to tango in their bid to outfit their competitors on the show.

''Keeping in view the huge audience response to the first season of 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa', which went on to become one of the most popular shows on Indian Television, we have made the show bigger and better. For, while the first season had eight celebrities vie with one another for the title of best dancer, the second season will present a line up of 12 celebrities paired with professional dancers who will take on the challenge. Also, the second season will present three new judges who will bring a new perspective to the show,''Executive Vice President and business head of Sony Entertainment television, Albert Almeida told mediapersons at a press meet here today.

Judging the participants will be an eminent panel of judges comprising of popular Bollywood actess and electrifying dancer Urmila Matondkar, India's leading choreographer Shiamak Davar and yesteryears' Bollywood dancing star Jeetendra, also lovingly called 'Jumping jack' for his dancing skills.

Hosting the show, which will fill the slot occupied by the music reality show Indian Idol, which reaches its finale this week, will be the winner of the first season of 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' Mona Singh (popularly know as Jassi of the popular show 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin') and successful TV actor Rohit Roy.

''The uniqueness of the show lies in the fact that you see celebrities striving to excel in a discipline that is vastly different from their professional field. The show is as much about dancing as their transformation during the course of the show which is what makes the programme stand apart from the other dancing shows on television.

And, with the second season having a longer run, newer dance styles, new look sets, fresh hosts and a bigger cast of talented celebrities paired with a dynamic bunch of dancer-choreographers, the dazzle and drama of this dance show will step up to another level, adding to the charm of the original.''Sidhartha Basu of Synergy Adlabs Media, who has produced the show along with BBC worldwide, said at the press meet where six of the participants of the show - Mini Mathur, Mika Singh, Cyrus Broacha, Mir Ranjan Negi, TV actor Prachi Desai (Bani of 'Kasam Se') and film and theatre actor Sandhya Mridul - and the judges were also present along with host Mona Singh.

Speaking on the occasion, Bollywood actor and show judge Urmila Matondkar said,''what is really interesting about this show is that it will have these celebrities, who are well known and adept in their respective vocations but who have never danced in their lives, shed their inhibitions towards dancing in face of tough competition from their fellow contestants.'' Punjabi pop singer Mika Singh said the show enabled him to try his hands at something he had never done before.

''For me, the great thing about participating in the show is that I get to learn dance for free,''mika said.

TV and film actor Sandhya Mridul also saw the show as an opportunity to enjoy herself Like the previous season of the show, 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa II will invite viewers to vote for their favourite dancing couple. The voting pattern will follow a 50:50 ratio for judges and audiences. One celebrity couple with the lowest scores will be eliminated every week. The voting lines will be open from the day of the performance to the next morning every weekend- starting September 28 at 9 pm to next morning 8 pm.

Mona replaces Shveta as anchor on 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 2'

MUMBAI: Remember the fireworks between Mona Singh and Shveta Salve during Sony TV's last year's dance competition 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa'? The battle hots up again as Shveta is ousted by Mona as the anchor of the second season of the show.

What happened? Shveta doesn't have a clue. But she isn't sulking either. "These things happen. Yes, I was looking forward to it. But never mind," Shveta said.

Last year, both the ladies were poised to take away the winner's crown. Shveta with her dancing skills and Madhuri Dixit features was the judges' favourite. But Mona with her perseverance and warmth worked hard on herself and sneaked the crown from under Shveta's nose much to everyone surprise.

Ever since, the two women haven't exactly been seeing eye-to-eye.

A year later, feathers were about to be unruffled when Shveta was signed to co-host 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 2' with Rohit Roy. The duo was to replace Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi.

Now in a sudden and surprising development Shveta has been ousted from the anchor's chair, to be replaced by Mona.

Apparently, Mona was seen to have a warmer and more viewer-friendly personality than Shveta, hence the eleventh hour decision to replace the original choice.

Rohit said, "I'm aware of the change. It will be interesting to see how the show goes."

Mona coyly refused to comment.

But 'Jhalak 2' seems to be going through casting dilemmas from the start. While the show is poised to resume from the last week of September, none of the judges from the first season, namely Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Farah Khan and Shilpa Shetty, have agreed to return on the show.

Only one judge, Urmila Matondkar, has been confirmed. The second judge is likely to be Shiamak Davar.

As for the third, your guess is as good as mine.

Mini Mathur, Cyrus Broacha, Mika, Sonali Kukarni are some of the stars who will be seen participating in the show.

Goal-maal on the dance floor

Former hockey coach, Mir Ranjan Negi, is having a very tough time shaking a leg in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Ranjib Mazumder

Mir Ranjan Negi matching steps with choreographer Marischa Fernandes

Dressed in a grey suit, slightly ill at ease about being surrounded by the paparazzi, the 51-year-old Mir Ranjan Negi does not really fit into the glamour world. The former coach of the Indian hockey team, has different goals to achieve here. Negi is rehearsing hard for shaking a leg in Sony TV's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, season two.

At a press meet recently, his entry sparked more applause and whistles than any other contestant. Call it the Chak De
India effect!

Very down-to-earth Negi decided to be a part of the glamorous show because he has a hidden agenda. The agenda is to garner support and lend sheen to the sport so close to his heart - hockey.

He says with a quiet confidence, "Glamour and glitz should enter hockey, as it will pave way for its revival. I think, Chak De
India has done a lot for the game and everyone in the country is talking about it. When I was approached for the show, I was pleasantly surprised. But, my participation in the show will definitely raise the awareness for hockey, since I am related to the game."

Never having been to a disco, learning to dance has been a very difficult task for Mir. He rehearses every day for three to five hours with his choreographer Marischa Fernandes. But, it's rough on him. He says, "My choreographer is taking great pains to teach me but she is a hard taskmaster. She started by teaching me hand movements followed by leg movements, but by that time, I'd have forgotten the hand movements. After much practice I managed to learn both. Then, she taught me, facial expressions. While mastering facial expressions, I could not recall the body movements. But, I will not give up."

Goof-ups are a daily occurrence during rehearsals. "There have been several goof ups, but the most interesting one happened a few days ago. I had to move my leg above her head, but I ended up hitting her head. Imagine! Most of the times, I do the opposite to what I am supposed to do. Actually, western dance forms are very difficult, and for my age it is really a big challenge," he says.

Another challenge is the age factor. While Mir is 51 and his choreographer Marischa is in her 20s. Is it a father-daughter chemistry? Mir snaps, "Please don't say that. She may be half my age, but this is not at all father-daughter chemistry. We are here to rock!"

Mir has had to take three weeks off form his work with the Bombay Customs as a superintendent, for the contest. "I am sure I will go into the finale. I am in a mood to take more leave from my company. Thankfully, my company is very co-operative," he says.

However, celebrity-dom comes with its own set of irritants. Negi is inundated with calls and he's seemingly irritated by the constant buzz. "In five minutes I get 50 calls. This is really annoying when I am practising," he says.

Being a sportsperson, Mir definitely has a good stamina giving his young choreographer Marischa, a run for her youth. He explains, "I have been used to long hours of practise, so I never get tired. Funnily, Marischa starts gasping at the end of the session," he adds.

The long dance hours are definitely taking a toll. But a true sportsman that he is, he is ready with a defence mechanism. "I have never danced, and the practise sessions tire me a bit. But, I have started doing yoga to increase my stamina. I am also swimming every day as it's the best form of exercise. I have lost a lot of weight too for the show," Mir says.

Although, being a part of the Gold Medal winning team, he has never been garlanded in his life. "I have never been garlanded, the reason being I have never been manipulative. I am here to prove a point, that we sportspersons have the true sportsman spirit. The game is what matters. I guess, the garland is waiting for me," he adds.

He thinks Sandhya Mridul will be his toughest competitor. "She has a lot of young energy in her. She would be tough, and Jay Bhanushali is the dark horse. But, I am sure people will vote for me straight from the heart," he says.

Mir, with his wife Vineeta and her 20-year-old son Nilesh, stays in Wadala. He lost his elder son, Niranjan, two years back in a motorcycle accident. But he still feels his presence. "I know my son is there in my new journey. I am here for my family and friends who are rooting for me," he adds.

Back to Section Stories Posted On Friday, September 21, 2007

Kavita Shyam, Ranjib Mazumder

Mona 'Jassi' Singh is tough nut to crack and Karan Oberoi realised this in his one year of wooing her. Karan's was ecstatic when Mona succumbed to his charms. Their love blossomed on the sets of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. The couple has been dating each other for the past one year and now it's time to make it official. The two have plans of getting married next year.

After much persuasion Karan spoke about their plans with divulging details. He said, "Yes, there are plans of tying the knot next year. As of now we are busy with our work commitments we don't get much time to meet up but we are constantly in touch with each other over the phone. We try to spend time with each other when ever possible. Currently we both are working hard for a successful career and then a lot of things have to be planned."

Currently Mona is busy with Jhalak Dikhhla Ja , Extreme Makeover, stage shows and her movie, while Karan is busy with Zee Antakshari, stage shows and his production house.

According to a source, "It will be a simple, traditional Sikh wedding at a Gurudwara. Karan is keen on a December wedding. The guest list could be an amalgamation of close friends and friends from the media. If all goes well then next year Karan's family will come down to Mumbai to work out the finer details with Mona's parents." Mona Singh was unavailable for comments.

Here's hoping the couple, who prefer to keep their personal lives under wraps, don't keep their wedding a secret and invite one and all to the wedding.

It's Mika V/S Rakhi on telly

The war between Punjabi singer Mika and Rakhi Sawant is about to begin round two. The animosity that began last year on Mika's birthday will now extend to our television screens as the item girl and the singer will battle for higher TRPs as they participate in two different dance shows.

"My participation is enough to push the TRPs but if on the other hand I have my student whose Godfather I am then I am sure the TRPs will also move up. You see I am not competing with anyone… I have already achieved a lot because I am no item boy. I am a singer who has had many hit songs. And sure the TRPs will go up…wherever Mika arrives the TRPs sure do move up… and where Mika's kids go there too the TRPs get better!"

But what made you want to pariticipate in a dance show? Was it because you knew Rakhi was also doing something similar?
"Look I am not trying to compete with anyone. The people who have come into this market for dancing are only famous today because of me. So no matter which show show you watch you will only remember me? If you watch my show you will have a lot of fun… if you watch other people's show then too you will remember me… so no matter where you go and what you watch you will only remember me!" says the singer.

Mika says he has a message for his nemesis. "I'd like to tell her that if you do win the competition do give some royalties to your Godfather who has helped you get such a big name in the industry!"

Things have taken a sour note between Rakhi and Mika since the time Sawant claimed that the singer forcefully kissed her at his birthday last year. Although Mika has always maintained nothing like this happened at the time of the incident it created a huge controversy followed which Mika released a song called "Bhai toone pappi kyoo li" poking fun at Rakhi who by then had gone sore claiming that the woman in her had been wronged by a man to anyone and everyone who heard her.

So with the two arch enemies a part of two different dance competitions right now things are only going to get hot…and not just on the dance floor!

All eyes on Rohit
22 Sep 2007, 1458 hrs IST,TNN
Rohit has vociferously refuted the allegations.
Rohit Roy is in the news for all the wrong reasons.Just recently there were reports of him pinching Dia Mirza's bottom during a film shoot. Of course, Rohit has vociferously refuted the allegations. But if you thought the actor is going to keep a low-profile for a while now, think again. Rohit continues to be in his element. At a Jhalak Dikhla Jaa event he was getting very pally with the young Prachi Desai. It was all in good fun no doubt. But, the focus is so much on Rohit right now that even his harmless flirtation is under scrutiny!

I've always played it safe: Tapur
24 Sep 2007, 0000 hrs IST,TNN

Tapur is prepared to handle controversies too.

In the seven years that she's been walking the ramp, model Tapur Chatterji has never had to deal with any controversies of any kind. But now that the Bengali babe has taken the plungeshe's one of the participants in Sony's reality dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Ja — how does she think she's going to deal with the controversies and catfights that might take place in the show, considering these reality shows always have a fair share of them?

"Yes, I'm sure this show will have its share of drama too but that's where your upbringing comes in. I'm sure that I'll handle any controversy that comes my way with dignity," says Tapur with a smile.

Considering the fact that she's been in the glam business for so long, how is it that she managed to stay away from the lure of acting on television or films? "I've always played it safe," says Tapur adding that she's never wanted to do anything that would put her career at risk.

But then, what made her change her mind for Jhalak...? "I was approached for the show a couple of times but I kept saying no because I have two left feet," she says. But it was a spur of the moment decision for Tapur to say yes to the show. "I had a meeting with the production guys and somehow, here I am!" laughs Tapur.

Now that almost three weeks of rehearsals are over, how is she faring as a dancer? "See I've never really danced. When my friends heard I'm taking part in this show, they were so surprised because I'm not the kind to dance even in a disc. But after this training, I'll just say one thing — I'm not so bad!" she adds. So now that she's taken the first step towards the small screen, would we see her acting on it as well?

"I'm not really looking at it as a step towards anything. I'm a non-dancer learning to be a dancer. It's a challenge and I'm trying to give my 100 per cent to it," she says. With late Hrishikesh Mukherji being her grandfather, it's natural to assume that she would join films someday. "I never say never!" she laughs.
