FROM THAINDIAN

Gangtok, May 5 (IANS) As many as 50,000 SMS votes have been cast in the past two weeks for Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia from this Sikkim capital alone to ensure his win on Sony TV's reality dance show "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa".

With the competition getting tougher, people have started a mega campaign in Sikkim and in the hills of neighbouring West Bengal to garner support for the Sikkim football star.

According to Thukchuk Lachungpa, president of the social organisation Citizens Forum, vouchers worth Rs.150,000 were bought to vote for Baichung.

"Citizens Forum has taken the responsibility to ensure that the son of Sikkim wins the reality show. He has shown considerable commitment towards dancing and is doing everything that a footballer can do to be a dancer," said Lachungpa.

According to Lachungpa, the football player was lagging behind in the show because of lack of votes and that is why Citizens Forum decided to back him up.

The forum is being supported by local cable network, Nayuma Television, as well as organisations like the Tibetan Youth Club and the United Sikkim Soccer Club.

"It is a similar case to Prashant Tamang (winner of 'Indian Idol 3'). People from all walks of life voted for Prashant along with people in Assam, Dehradun and the West Bengal hills. We want the same response for Baichung," said Lachungpa.

Citizens Forum has planned meetings with the representatives of the Prashant Fan Club in Darjeeling and Kalimpong in next few days and will campaign in the northeast region where Baichung has a large fan following.

"Kolkata and the various football associations are voting for Baichung, which is not enough if we want him to win. Mass voting is scheduled for this Friday at Hotel Himalayan Heights where people are welcome to vote through SMS as recharge coupons will be provided by the Citizens Forum," he added.

The organisations that had supported Prashant for "Indian Idol" will now rally behind Baichung as well, he said.

"We have enough funds in place to carry out a large scale campaign for Baichung. What we need is more proactive support realising the 'urgency' and the same kind of frenzy, which was witnessed during campaigning for Prashant. We can do Sikkim's son proud by showing our support," said Lachungpa.

A grand musical extravaganza has also been planned at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok for the finale, which is scheduled for the last week of May.

A similar campaign was carried out for Debojit Saha, winner of Zee TV's "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005? and "Indian Idol 4? winner Sourabhee Debbarma too.

The third season of "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa" went on air Feb 27 with 12 contestants from different walks of life such as sports, films, fashion and music, among others, and they teamed up with professional dance partners to perform on the show. Out of 12, seven have been eliminated.

Baichung and his partner Sonia are competing with Hard Kaur-Savio, Parul Chauhan-Deepak, Karan Singh Grover-Nicole S. Alvares and Gauhar Khan-Himanshu for the title.

Before killing me....please read and try to comprehend my point....some of you will find my post long as an essay...I know so no need to tell me.

I respect that BB won and all the power to him and Sonia. This article proves that whoever lobbies for votes the best wins. Now the lobbying factor for votes may be a celeb's popularity or a celeb's regional affiliation. And I am not complaining as I know that this is the format...it's always 50% judges and 50% votes. So Baichung got more votes and he won....my only problem is that had Karan won....the same voting system would have been a contention of debate....and this dichotomy is quite unbearable to say the least.

I know many will say that BB could dance and Karan cannot.....to that I would say everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think both of them as dancers have good and bad qualities.

My only point is: It is always the voting that decides the winner....so whoever lobbies for votes and has maximum support will win period. And quite frankly the judges knew that Gauhar is far better dancer than BB...again my opinion..you can disagree...so why did they not blame the voting system now?

Also no where does the article mention dance...so I safely conclude that the majority of people from the North East were voting on the basis of regionalism.....isn't that blind voting as well? I am only asking because time and again I have been abused and called a "blind K-babe". So voting for Karan because of his so called "armaan" image is blind voting but voting because someone is from the same region as you is not blind voting?
Again I am not complaining that BB won...I accept the fact that the entire North East came out and voted so he won....no two ways about it. But I am just talking about principals here.

Please try to maintain a civil atmosphere here and refrain from name calling.
Peace.

that is exactly what makes the difference. Regional vote always plays a large role. No one would have anythign against Karan's popularity if they felt he deserved to win, but they strongly felt he didn't hence everyone had a problem.

For Baichung's case most agree that he went from total zero to something worth watching. I am glad baichung won. Thank you to the people who made sure of it. 😆

the point here is very simple.. it so happened in this case, baichung showed improvement.. if u look at his first dance, dance pe chance, and his last bangra, undoubtedly he has improved.. but the minute u compare him with the others in the show, he doesn't not even come in the picture.. but had that not been the case, even then, baichung would've got the votes he got.. remember prashant tamang? can anybody say that he was a better singer than amit paul? its become a routine now, with NE.. they ensure people from there win, and in many cases they r not the deserving.
and while most would say that baichung has got the scores to prove it, he is a very good dancer, this is again the voice of those who support him. the voice of the others who dont support him, nor any of the finalist for that matter, really fails to see the sense behind his scores.. personally, ive had this discussion with so many people, all having different favorites, but everybody fails to see the reason behind baichung being the highest scorer in the semis, and his tie with gauhar in the finale!

That's precisely my point...voting in the end decided the winner and had this winner been Karan....then popularity had been the thorn...but no one seems to be concerned with voting now...so as I said I earlier I have a problem with the principal in play here....voting okay for some finalist but not okay for others.

Anisha I want to be safe here and remind everyone that we are not against BB winning....here just to discuss the principal of voting which till some days ago was a serious thorn in some people's eyes including the judges.

I do agree there. Gauhar is amazing dancer and Baichung is not anywhere close to her. But given that popularity matters, and his improvement makes him a worthy candidate in my eyes. hence I have no complains. No matter how I try to look at it Karan didn't deserve to win. He doesn't have anything that BB or Gauhar doesn't have.
It is not just this show, but even in other. The degree of improvement matters.
Baichung is loved by his community. I believe he even has a stadium in his name. Now that's called love. 😃

well dear,i understand what you are trying to say here..I support BB,but I couldnt vote for him as Iam not an Indian viewer..what i feel here is people look in their favourites much more than their dance..some people loved karan not becoz of his dance..but they watched his dance and voted for him becoz they love him..the reason only they know..in BB's case also its the same..I never said that he is the best dancer in the show..noway..but we all love him for some reason..for me its his choreography plus the improvement he showed plus his simple nature..I was a fan of HK..But I had a clear reason in loving her..her dance! After she got out I first decided to leave this forum..But when I saw people bashing me I thought not to leave this forum..I decided to stay here and support my second favourite..And Iam happy that he won..😊
