Is being a non-dancer a requirement?

Dear all,

I am a silent member on the JDJ forum but have been around India-Forums first as a very active member and part of the Dev Team and then a silent member for years now so seeing such angst against story lines, performances and the ideologies each of us bring in with us on a public forum is not alien to me.

While we all have our favorites, including me, I fail to understand one comment that is being put forth by many people on this forum. While I understand you might be a Isha-Salman fan and might not like Karan Wahi. Or you might adore Bharti's comic timing but not her dance. Or Rashmi might be a wild-card and hence not deserving enough or whatever other reason you may have to like or dislike a particular contestant.

Who has told you, the viewer, that Jhalak Dikh Laja is about non-dancers turning into dancers? Is it in their official description or is that what Colors proclaimed when they announced the celebrities? This isn't Dance India Dance or So You Think You Can Dance. It isn't about how well you can learn to dance, it is about celebrities getting an opportunity to present another side to themselves through a reality show. Sweet and simple.

Isha might be trained in a couple of forms and Rashmi in some others. Rithvik might have been a participant in DID and Karan may have done many shows. Gurmeet can be trained in several other forms and be stiff in a few others. But the point is why does this have any bearing on your opinion of who must stay or who has an advantage?

This show is about giving a choreographer the opportunity to 'DANCE WITH A STAR' and mould them the best possible way they can! The show's title speaks for itself. Which actor today is not a trained dancer? It could be a couple of years of Bollywood or ten years of Kathak but then training is training.

Is Sudha Chandran not allowed to take part or has an unfair advantage because she is a dancer first and an actor second? Or is Mona Singh allowed to win because she is non-dancer? Or is Sandhya Mridul not allowed to win because she is a dancer and can pick up dances more easily?

This show is about a star, his following and how much he can convince the viewer and have fun whilst at it. This show is about a choreographer getting to dance with a star and the star showing another side of their personality.

Who told you that a celebrity has to be a non-dancer for this show to be fair?

Really good post and I'm glad that as a silent follower of IF you decided to post something.
I too mostly silently follow India Forums but over the years certain topics have made me speak up and post because like yourself I too agree that people sometimes seem to forget simple premises of a show or reasons behind certain creative choices etc.

No where does it say (and this according to the indian version) that JDJ is only for non-dancers.
It is like you mentioned a platform for celebrities to showcase and try a different talent and bring that to the forefront. Through a show like JDJ we get to see seasoned or trained celebrities showcase their dance talent but also those celebrities who surprise us and pick up dancing like duck to water.

Isha is an actress but hasn't had the mainstream success like other actresses. We saw a glimpse of some of her dancing in Kisna and I always remembered her for that, but I had no idea how talented she really was in terms of dance. Something even Karan Johar admitted.

JDJ is a dance show but its different to the other dance shows, it gives celebrities the opportunity to learn new dance forms and showcase a talent that they may or may not have.

I love the concept of the show and for me this year has been great because alongside trained dancers we have also seen some amazing performances by those who aren't trained.

At the end of the day it is up to the individual celebrity and their choreographer in terms of how much effort they put in and it shows when they perform. The likes of Isha/Salman, Deepak/Rashmi, Rithvik and his partner even Bharti & Savio work damn hard and it shows in their performances. And we as audience members should appreciate that effort and unbiasedly show support. I have favourites everyone does, but as a dancer myself I tend to appreciate those that I feel really are bringing something new to the stage. I'm not a fan of the wildcard entries getting a kickstart but both Rashmi and Rithvik have worked hard and performed really well. I love Karan Wahi from previously but as much as I love him his overall performance hasn't impressed me but I'm honest enough to admit that.

However some fans on here won't admit that, they'll blindly follow their chosen celeb and would much rather they win even if they aren't as good as the other celebs and dance standards.

I think the judges this year have helped, they've been pretty good in terms of judging the performances and keeping things level but at the end of the day it's up to the audience and that worries me somewhat because I do feel that maybe we may not get a worthy JDJ winner

@TM, you know this has been said and read million times over multiple topics, but unfortunately people tend to ignore it. It can get quite monotonous to hear it from time to time. So I am glad to have a topic which clears this once and for all. Hope people can see the light now 😆 but then again some would love to simply close their eyes and then question the same thing all over again. With some it can get simply redundant.

I agree. Though I personally thought the judges began as being a little too lenient since the past many weeks they have upped the ante and that has made everyone step up too!

Glad to know there are people like me that exist here too and not everyone turns a blind eye to the real world, logic and the actual rules of the game.

Absolutely loving Isha do the many performances she does so amazingly well and though I am not a fan I can say it is one performer that I have seen performances of multiple times! But then again I have enjoyed the lifts Bharti has done as well since I can't imagine how one would go about them. All in love I personally love the mix of having people that have two left feet and others who take to dance as you said, like a duck does to water :)

I know but then that happens with all forums when the emotions of the people are high. I believe it was now imperative to make this clarification since we are reaching the fag end and though we have our own likes and dislikes, the winner or the top 5 or top 3 shouldn't face backlash because they have rhythm and movement in their bodies :)
