I completely agree with the TM. I have absolutely no idea as to what exactly was 'hatke' in their performance. Isha-Salman are overrated to the core, and everyone seems to love their performances simply because they haven't ventured too far out of their comfort zone, ever. Make Isha do an out-and-out hip-hop piece, or robotics, or just bollywood for that matter (we have seen how that one went) and see them tumble and fail miserably.
Coming to today's performance, they chose Tango. Now, Tango is one of the toughest latin dance forms. So I'm going to give them one brownie point for thinking of attempting it. The key word here is think, because the piece never rose beyond that initial idea and wasn't executed the way it should have been. Tango is no halwa, ki 2 hafte taange upar neeche hilai aur aa gaya. It has technique, grace, skill, posture and most importantly the feel, which unfortunately both Salman and Isha lacked. Tango is, essentially, a very sensual form of dance. Of course, there are certain differently flavored performances but they too have a subtle sensuality about them. And tango is always aggressive, it is never soft, no matter how you do it. Salman and Isha did it like they were performing a dreamy bollywood sequence. Bas background mein snowflakes aur moonlight ki kami thi 😆 And tango dancers sure as hell do not giggle in the middle of the performances 😆
See the reason why most Latin lovers opt for Salsa is plain and simply because it is the most learnable, for the lack of any other term, form of Latin dance. If you excel in Salsa, then other forms become relatively easier. Just like various other classical forms become approachable once you're trained in Kathak or bharatnatyam.
If you watch this performance:

You see how sharp they are, and how perfect their lines are. Now don't think I'm saying Salman and Isha should have been equally good. I'm just trying to put across a glimpse of what tango is supposed to look like.
Nicole Scherzinger did a Tango piece in Dancing with the stars, and hers turned out to be much more believable.

^And why do I have a feeling that alot of the movements were copied? 😕
Anyway, now the thing is. Even if we exclude all of the above and look at Salman-Isha's performance as a stand-alone performance, there were a lot of flaws. Isha lost her balance alot of times, the lifts were not clean. I could see Salman faltering in a lot of places. In fact I would say it was quite a jarring performance overall, even when I keep tango out of it. I have no idea why the judges failed to spot the flaws, or maybe they just didn't want to. I could have never imagined that the judges' initial response was a prank, I took it seriously and thought that for once they're being fair. But it turned out to be a phoos bomb 😕
When someone attempts a new style, there are bound to be problems and mistakes. All that is fine. It is not the mistakes I have a problem with - it is the judges' absolute ignorance of them that I definitely have a problem with. If Salman and Isha had been awarded scores that they actually deserved, I'm sure everyone would have been okay with it. But when they are put up on a pedestal and touted to be the best thing since Jesus's resurrection, then they automatically open themselves to criticism. If a judge compares their standard to an International one, then obviously their flaws will be magnified even more.
Personally, I never look forward to their performances. They're way past their peak and have become completely thanda and stale as a jodi.
