I'm not very sure myself, but it is the celebration of the 9 forms of the goddess Durga or Shakti, over a period of 9 days; the 9 forms being - Parvati, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga, Nainadevi - I can't remember the rest 😭

Another version has it that Parvati comes to her maika or parents home during Navratri and on the last day, the day of the visarjan, she goes back to her husband Shiva.

And I also read somewhere that on the first 3 nights of navratri you are supposed to worship Parvati; the next 3 nights - Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and the last 3 nights you are supposed to worship Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge.

Hope that helps 😊

Happy Navratri everyone. Yes, you said it right, Hansa, we do pooja of nine Devis and fast for 7 or 8 days and feed Parsad to Kanjjaka ( Girls under 10 yers of age) and then the family memebrs who are fasting for 8 days start eating ANN i.e wheat floor or other vegetables. If you are keeoing the fasts for 8 days you are not suppose to eat Roti or Rice. You can have potatoes or milk products. Some people do Kanjjka on Ashtmi and some people do on Navmi( 9th day) which is also called Ram Navmi.Ram Navmi is also celebrated as Shri Ramji's Birthday and Dashmi or 10th day is Dushehra which is a SYMBOL of VICTORY OF GOOD OVER EVIL. 20 days after Dushehra we celebrate Diwali to Welcome Shri Ram to Ayudhya. ( She Ram's Banwaas of 14th yrs ended on Diwali night.

I think Bengali's do more of Kali Pooja and Gujrati's do Amba or Durga pooja and Punjabi's do All devi's and Shri Ramji's pooja in Navratri days. We consider to read Ramayna in Navratri week is very Holy and lucky. I am the lazy one and I only read SUNDER KAAND from Ramayna and DURGA Stuti from Devi pooja.

No Neelam, Bengalis are famous for their durga puja. Durga puja is our biggest festival. In fact Bengalis don't call navratri - navratri. They call it Durga Puja.
