From films to serials
A star: Samir Soni Actors usually graduate from serials to films but in the case of Samir Soni it has been the other way round. Though he made his debut in Raj Kumar Santoshi's film about eight years ago, recognition has come his way only now. "I made my debut in the Hindi film 'China Gate'. This was followed by 'Lajja' starring Madhuri Dixit, and finally I got a chance to play Amitabh Bachchan's son in 'Baghbaan'. But only after seeing my performance in 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' on Sony Entertainment Television have people woken up to the fact that I exist. Television has brought me into people's life." Samir discloses that initially he was to act in only four episodes of "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin" but has now ended up acting in "60 episodes". Although Samir and Mona Singh, who plays the main character of Jassi in the serial, have a great on-screen chemistry, the former has made it clear that he would act with his co-star in new projects only if the storyline excites him. "According to a poll conducted recently, most of the viewers wanted Purab, the character played by me, to go back to Jassi. Although Mona Singh is a fine actress, I have to be fully satisfied with the script before signing any film or serial with her," adds Samir, who started acting at the young age of eight under the watchful eyes of theatre expert Barry John. On acting in serials, Samir says: "The line between TV and films is increasingly getting blurred. Even Karisma Kapoor did a TV serial when she was at the peak of her film career. For that matter, even Raveena Tandon and Amitabh Bachchan with 'Kaun Banega Corepati' were on the small screen. So I am not doing anything wrong by appearing on the tube." Samir says that even though television's reach is more than films, he prefers displaying his acting skills on the silver screen. "In serials because of time limitation and lack of a bound script the quality suffers whereas in films an artiste's creativity comes alive."
