Hey guys! Now that I've finished my huge exam that I've been studying for all summer, I wanted to start reading some good book now that I have the time. I was just wondering if any of you could suggest some good novels by Indian authors. I live in the states tho - so they'd have to be something I could access in English from here. I would love some ideas though! :) Thanks sooooo much! :)

my favorites are jane austens all novels , enid blytons, mill on the floss, and many more, list is endless,
and since u mentioned Indian authors,i liked anita desais coupe(sorry if spelling is wrong),vikram seth s suitable boy,and a few comedy novels names i dont remember 😕 ,shiv kheras and robin sharmas books are also good, arundhati roy is also there, but i didnot like her book,

Hey!! :) Thanks!!! I love books and read them all the time, so i completely understand what u mean when u say the list is endless! I have never read Indian authors though and would really like to start since they seem to be very popular these days! :) My roommate read and loved The God of Small Things and I tried reading it but it was too slow for me and I couldn't really get into it. So I really wanna try other authors. Thanks for the suggestions - will try them out!

As far as my recommendations to u go, right now, i'm telling everyone I know to read Kite Runner by Khaled Husseni and The Unwanted by Kien Nguyen. Read them - you'll fall in love!!! (and u'll cry! 😊 ) Let me know what u think of them if you do infact get around to reading them! :)

Chitra Banerjee, Amitabh Ghosh and Jhumpa Lahiri are also good. You could try their books - Sister of my Heart; Mistress of Spice; Glass Palace and Namesake.

Try reading the God of Small Things again after a couple of years when you are older. I think it is one of the most brilliantly-crafted books ever written. The story itself may not be new, but the way it is written is awesome. Arundhati Roy has the most original style of writing and even the language she uses is so original!!! It's as though she has invented a new language. Moreover, much of the book is written from the POV of 2 seven-year olds, which is a feat in itself!!! 😊

Wow, Jassi di and Hansa di...most of the books you have recommended are ones i have loved reading. I was really moved by The God of Small Things, although it was a little too distrubing. I haven't read Seth's A Suitable Boy yet; but i have read his An Equal Music, which is one of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching books i've read in my life.

Hansa di, i've been trying to get hold of Sister of My Heart for years now, but it is not available in my town it seems.

And oh....do try to read The White MUghals by William Dalrymple. It is a fascinating account of a real love story during the days of the British Raj. Sadly. i got it fromt he university library and couldn't finish it before the exams, so i had to return it after reading only about a third of it!

I dunno if you'll be able to get them in the US but i love reading Ruskin Bond's work, soakde in the purity of the mountains. They are perfect for gentle humour and love of nature.

If you are interested in the Partition, read Bapsi Sidhwa's Ice-cAndy Man. The movie "1947- Earth" was based on this but let me tell you, the film is NOTHING compared to the book!
