Vrish,
as per DP, once on Mandarachal mount, all the Devas were present. Narad asked Shivji, the Tridev's upasana makes a jeeva reach the ultimate goal, even Indra etc have worshiped the Tridevas to get what they have today. But whom do you 3 pray? Please enlighten us.
Hearing this question, Shivji went in samadhi, had Goddss Paramba's darshan, said The Pure, Eaternal, Prakritiswarupini, Bhagavati Jagadamba is the Para-Brhma, we pray to her. She is formless but takes a form & creats this World, nourishes it, in the end destroys it. She has created Brhma, Vishnu & Shiv & gave them Tridevis to help in their respective work. She is ParaShakti. Aadi Shakti is her active aspect prevailing in the World.

My understanding from the answers above is that Ma Durga is a form of Parvati, who herself personifies Adi Shakti. Whereas the one who created Shiva or who he meditates on is Param Shakti

Purely etymologically, 'Para' means 'the highest' and 'Adi' means first.

Now, the concept of 'Shakti' has been dealt with in two ways and we come across both the approaches in various scriptures.

In those texts, where the Devi is worshiped as the Supreme Power, she is referred to as 'Para Shakti'. In such cases, though she may be eulogized as Lakshmi, Narayani, Kali, Sharada, it refers to her various attributes rather than relationships with the male gods. It is a conceptual thing- the idea of Divine Mother- Maha Devi. In such cases, it becomes meaningless to argue "Why is the Devi being addressed as both Gauri and Narayani / Does this refer to Mrs Vishnu or Mrs Shiva?" The idea is one of the Highest Feminine Power- who according to her believers is the creator, sustainer and destroyer of the three worlds.

Now, in the Puranic stories, the distinction becomes very clear - because the stories revolve around incidents rather than abstract concepts. Hence it becomes clear whether it is Mrs. Brahma, Mrs Vishnu or Mrs Shiva. In such cases, Parvati / Devi is almost always the wife of Shiva. I will be surprised to find something to the contrary.

"Adi Shakti" is a generic term referring to the "First Lady" ( no pun intended). It can refer to Durga or Lakshmi depending on the text you are reading.

Tarakiri,

First of all, there is a difference b/w avatar and roop. Avatar is a manifestation for a specific purpose- sometimes killing of a demon / asura, sometimes in answer to a devotee's prayer, etc. 'Roop', on the other hand is a form / description based on the qualities (physical or spiritual) of the deity.

Let me give you an example to make this clear. Krishna is an avatar but Murlidhar, Radhika- Vallabh, Giridhari are his different 'roops'.

In case of Adi Shakti too, some are avatars of Hers. For instance she manifested as Lalitha to kill the demon Bhandasura. She manifested as Shakhambari when the whole world was afflicted with severe famine.

But names like Shailaputri, Aparna, Girija, Shivaa are epithets given to her. The Lalitha Sahasranam lists a thousand names of the Goddess- and not all of them can be counted as avatars.

My question:

since, Sihva refused to get married and wanted to remain a TAPASVI all his life, the TRIMURTI would never complete. it was necessary that he get married. but bcoz of his nature, his wife had to possess certain qualities which only MAA DURGA possesed like Patience, tolerance, etc. so, on brhama's advice, his son DAKSH performed tapasya to please MAA DURGA who agreed to be born as his daughter and get married to Shiva. thus, SATI was born. but as sati and shiva could not have a happy life together, sati took the form of parvati and was born again. so, MAA DURGA only wanted to complete the trimurti and fulfil her bhakt's desires...thats all...thats what she does..SHE HELPS EVERYONE...without her, LIFE WOULD BE INCOMPLETE for every1 including the GODS WHOM MORTALS WORSHIP!!!!
