My Character & I
By: Shaheen Parkar
September 12, 2006
Rahuol Lohani
Is Bhola a typical village bumpkin?

He is that quintessential gaon ka chora who believes in simple living. He is honest, forthright and speaks straight from the heart. He can't fathom how people can play with emotions and bear malice towards each other. Bhola is a do-gooder, ever ready to help others.

But along with simple living, hasn't Bhola also had a taste of the high life?
All this is courtesy Esha (Monaz Mevawalla), the girl he loves. He just wants to please her and is willing to do anything to keep her happy.

She wants Bhola to be mod. He follows her to the big city and she is instrumental in giving him a makeover. He trades his dhoti-kurta for designer Western wear — it is all for Esha's sake. But he soon realises that Esha is playing with his emotions.

She lies to her friends that Bhola is from France when the fact is that Bhola comes from a small village called Devrinadiketeer that Esha refers to as DKKT — as if it were a fashion label.

Can Bhola fathom the urban-bred Esha?
He has mixed feelings for her. Though he has realised that she is just using him, he still loves her. He can't forget her nor can he give her a piece of his mind, as it will hurt her. Bhola is caught in a terrible dilemma now.

Why does Bhola go back to where he belongs?
Yes, Bhola has realised the futility of loving Esha. Her sister Aanya (Priya Badlani) has already explained to Bhola that Esha is on her own trip, yet Bhola being the do-gooder does not now know how to resolve the situation.

Can such a character exist in real life?
Yes, why not? There are many Bholas and Eshas in the world.

As told to Shaheen Parkar

PASSION PLAY

'LUST IS PASSION'

Says Priya Badlani who had a very awkward first date

HARSHADA REGE

Your first crush...
My first crush was an Australian guy. He was my cousin's friend and used to celebrate Easter with us. I used to be completely thrilled when he would be around.
Your first date...
Was very awkward. I had a lot of friends with me. (laughs)
Your idea of a perfect date...
A good conversation, good music and great wine.
What qualities do you look for in a man?
That's one thing I have never been sure about. I don't go out with a shopping list. It's just a question of clicking at that point. It can't be one thing, it's the overall personality that matters.
What was your first relationship like?
You learn from it. You learn not to make the same mistakes
again. (laughs)
What do you think about lust versus love? Both are equally important. Lust is passion and that is very important in a relationship.
What is romance to you?
I hate to admit it but I am a die-hard romantic, I believe in romance. It brings joy. But today everything has become instant. People are not willing to enjoy the moments that romance is all about.
Who'd you like to get dirty with on an island?
Who has an island? I can't think of anyone who'd have one! The only person who had an island was Marlon Brando.
Do you believe in the institution of marriage?
Yes, I do believe in it. But no one should rush into it because you are supposed to get married at a particular age. You can't force yourself into such a relationship.
Your take on infidelity?
I don't want to be judgmental. It depends on the situation. But I would be hate to be an situation like that. I would hate to be the reason for a marriage to break. I may be facing the same someday.

Shot at site!

Ranjib Mazumder

Priya Badlani and Sudeep Sahir in Jab Love Hua
Actor Sudeep Sahir aka Raghu, got his gift one day prior to his birthday, on the sets of Jab Love Hua. The actor had to shoot 20 hours at a stretch, driving a truck for the first time, to earn one-day leave on his birthday.

When contacted Sudeep said, "When I requested the production house for one-day leave, they asked me to complete my scenes beforehand. The scene required me to drive a truck on a hilly area. I had a tough time managing the gear and the clutch. At the end, I was supposed to stop the truck in front of the camera, but almost bumped into it. It was a narrow escape."

The actor also hurt his legs while doing the stunts. "I have never driven a truck before and I was nervous," Sudeep added.

But, there was a big surprise waiting for the actor at home. "My wife Anantika took me on a trip to Goa for celebration. It's been my best birthday gift so far," he said.

Jabb Love Hua catches on TRPs

It was a frantic day on the sets of Zee's Jabb Love Hua. We reached the sets and everbody was busy doing their bit to complete their scenes for the day. With the new years just a few days away and some actors planning a sabbatical on the eve, it was all the more work for the unit including the actors. After the initial chit-chat and waiting we managed to speak to the actors and other unit people about the show that has completed 138 episodes so far and is still going strong.

Jabb Love Hua's theme has always been of interest for its different flavour. Kudos to Tony and Diya Singh for the innovative concept. This is their next after Jassi which had been a resounding success story. Unlike Jassi, Jab Love Hua has been a modest TRP raker. The story of a village boy Raghu played by Sudip Sahir and the urban girl Aanya played by Priya Badlani is witnessing a lot of action packed moments to spice up the current track and gather more TRPs.

So, what better way to do this than to introduce a wedding angle. Raghu and Aanya who have forever been seen at loggerheads and bickering at each other are finally set to tie the knot. But, it's not so easy as the situation keeps getting complex by the day with Raghu's Grandma (Pratima Kazni) adding to the pre-nuptial woes by wanting him to marry Kangna (Poonam Gulati aka Shubra of Saat Phere fame). Adds the ravishing and vivacious Priya Badlani "My character in the show has always excited me. After the marriage sequence, we expect a lot of drama to unfold. This is my first lead role and I am very lucky to be a part of it."

"Getting to play a village boy has been a great experience. And, the show has always given me a chance to do different things. I am quite happy with the way the show is shaping up" says Sudip.

Moreover, Raghu is doing a ghost act in the show to prove his innocence for being framed under a false case. So, he climbs trees, joins his own funeral in connivance with the villagers to scare his adversaries and finally succeeds in nailing the culprits.

Referring to his current ghost act, he further adds, "I had to climb a 25 feet high tree to do the ghost act and did as many retakes to get it right. But it was fun with a tinge of scare to be doing the stunt." Sudip has done serials like Ayushmaan and music videos like 'Channa Ve' apart from modeling for a range of products.

The show has been trying to catch up on TRPs and with its new storyline we hope it achieves the same

Amma-tter of modesty

Small clothes create a big problem for Jaanki Amma in Jab Love Hua.

Rameshwari's modest look in Jab Love Hua
Rameshwari aka Jaanki Amma recently had to shield her modesty while shooting for Jab Love Hua. Amma was not amused when she was asked to wear revealing clothes on screen. Obviously, the idea of her preening in skimpy, itsy-bitsy shockers was hardly befitting to her character.

According to a production house source, "The story takes a turn where the protagonist Raghu is getting married in Mumbai and his family comes to the city for the marriage. So, the production house wanted Rameshwari (who plays Raghu's mother) to become the Mumbai mem and wear skimpy outfits. Rameshwari was offended and refused to wear the outfits. Then, a heated argument followed."

Rameshwari confirmed the news of the fireworks on the sets. She says, "I was really put off by the way they were giving instructions. They did not even bother to ask me and I certainly did not like it. In fact, their demands were almost threatening."

"We were given a few backless modern outfits, which I found very obscene, both for my age and character. I don't have a problem in wearing simple western outfits as I wear them off-screen. But, those skimpy clothes were too much! Moreover, they didn't seem clued in to the fact that they are killing the essence of the show. The serial is based on rural life and we all have only worn 'decent' Indian costumes so far. I finally settled for a regular western gown that suited my age and character," Rameshwari adds.

The senior actress tones down her outspokenness by adding, "I have got a good feedback for my role in Jab… Apart from these small problems, things are almost fine."

Quest for creativity

Suhasini Mulay with co-stars in Virasaat: Motherly roles
Suhasini Mulay with co-stars in Virasaat:
Motherly roles

"It's surprising that an actress of her talent is getting recognition so late in her career," says Mrinal Sen, the doyen of Bengali cinema who first cast Suhasini Mulay in 1969 in Bhuvan Shome, one of the most path-breaking films of the past half a decade.

The then 16-year-old Mulay went on to win a national award for her powerful performance. She had to wait for an unbelievable 30 years before she could display her immense talent in Gulzar's Hu Tu Tu which too fetched her the National Award.

Since then, Suhasini Mulay has become a much in-demand actress and has been seen as Aamir Khan's mother in Lagaan and Akshay Khanna's mother in Dil Chahata Hai and Bobby Deol's grandmother in Humraaz.

Besides, she has started accepting roles on the small screen and is doing Puja Ka Ghar on Zee TV and Virasaat on Sahara.

But, by the look of things she's headed exactly that way. And unless a gifted writer like Gulzar, Javed Akhtar or Ashutosh Gowalikar comes up with some bright ideas, she has no choice but to accept the mother of all roles!

My favourite co-star is Ram Pyari'

No, Priya Badlani is not talking about another actress, she is referring to a buffalo who's become very popular with the entire cast.

HARSHADA REGE

Priya Priya Badlani's serial Jab Love Hua has completed an year and though the actor is fond of her cast there's someone whom she cannot do without. "That has to be Ram Pyari," laughs Priya. "And though we did have a rocky start I have found my way around her," says Priya. But what about her other co-stars? "I get along well with everyone, but being an animal lover I am very fond of Ram Pyari," says Priya. Remembering the first time she had to shoot with a buffalo, Priya says, "I remember the buffalo had stepped on my toe and it hurt like crazy, but things have changed since then." According certain reports many of the actors in the serial were upset with the frequent change in the time slot given to the serial. What does Priya have to say about it? "I think, changing the time slot does affect the viewership. But I think, as an actor my job is to act. And the change in the time slot doesn't bother me," she says. Speaking about the oneyear long run of the show Priya says, "I think Anaya was a good role. Any girl who has been brought up in a city can probably identify with the trouble that the character has while adjusting to the rural settings." And though shooting has been an exciting experience, there have been some problems too. "The hay is my biggest trouble. I am allergic to hay and have had lot of trouble while shooting," she laughs.
Considering this is the only serial that Priya has been doing over over a year now, doesn't it get monotonous? "Yes, at times it does get monotonous, But the story keeps changing and new characters are added to the serial that keeps the excitement level high. There's never a dull moment on the sets and I like it that way," she says.
So, what does Priya do when she is not playing Anaya? "I am busy running my household errands and catching up on sleep. I have no life apart from work. But I am not complaining," she says.

Kavita Shyam

A still from Jab Love Hua

Jab Love Hua has so far changed its timeslot thrice. And its actors are dejected with the channel. The show has had kids as its target audience and because of the reshuffling in the timeslot (three times at last count) it is losing its target audience. Worse still, the TRPs are not up to the mark. Jab Love Hua initially started with an 8.30 pm timeslot, then moved onto 10.30 and now has an 11 pm slot which is far from being called a primetime show.

"Actors are disappointed with the current timeslot as it becomes too late for kids to watch the show. We lose out on viewership and it really affects the show as it loses its fanbase. Many actors also have the worrying question whether the show is going off air since the timeslot keeps shifting," says Pratik Chavan, executive producer on the show.

"It's up to the channel and the
production house to decide what timings suit the show. We actors have no say in this. The initial time slot was meant for kids and the TRPs have got affected as the kids do not get to watch the show late in the night. Nevertheless, the TRPs are still pretty decent, I believe," points out Sudip Sahir aka Raghu.

Reportedly, Rameshwari aka Janki amma has also been very upset about the changes in the slot.

On being asked about the changes in the timeslot, producer Tony Singh says, "The channel decides the timeslot. The show is meant for kids but the storyline is altered according to the slot keeping the base of the show intact. None of the actors should be saddened by this as it is not actors or the production house's prerogative. Besides, no actor can guarantee a good TRP with any timeslot. None of these
actors can guarantee a hit. Actors should simply perform irrespective of the timeslot." When asked about rumours that the show might go off air, he adds calmly, "There is a first and last episode for all shows on air. We haven't yet been informed if the show is going off air."

Mohit Malik's spooky experience!

The actor recently shot for his serial in a haunted fort in Jaipur

HARSHADA REGE

Mohit Malik popularly known as Rahul of Jabb Love Hua was shooting in Jaipur recently. the actor who was there to shoot for Star One's Shh Phir Koi Hai, says there is a certain mystery around the forts that they were shooting at. "It was a story about haunted places and we shooting at the actual locations. That made it an exciting experience," says Mohit. And though Mohit didn't have any scary experience, he says one does get a eerie feeling. "Thankfully, the unit had put lights in the area that we were shooting at. Also, we were told not to venture into certain areas. And I followed the advice that was given to me," he laughs.
The actor is currently back in Jab Love Hua. "I am happy with the way my role has shaped up though I was
not a part of the story for about a month," says Mohit. When asked about the recent reports about actors not being treated properly on the sets, he says, "It did happen to my friends, but I wasn't a part of the unit then."
After playing a positive character, Mohit is now playing a baddie in Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan on Star One. "This is an absolutely negative role. The role is that of a spurned lover. I am having a great time playing these roles. With positive character you can only portray certain emotions, but negative characters offer lot of scope," he feels.
In many TV serials what begins as a lead role is later turned into a side track. Does that irritate Mohit? "That's the rule of the game. One can't really complain about it. As long as I am not out of a serial for a long time, I don't mind it. Like Jab Love Hua, for example, I was not doing the show for a month, but that didn't worry me. But had I been out of the show for four-five months, I would have had a reason to worry about," he says.
