From where Ragini was sitting, Nachiket and the girl were not visible. So, she didn't see when he pointed to her while he told the girl about his beautiful wife. He apologized to her and the girl laughed when he informed her that he was acting on a dare by a friend. She went away soon and Nachiket picked up a cup of tea for Ragini.
"Dad, mujhe aapse baat karni h," Ranbir pointed to a corner and Nachiket followed him, wondering what his son wanted to talk about.
"Kya hua, Ranbir?"
Ranbir paused for a moment, and Nachiket could see he was choosing his words. Finally, he spoke.
"Dad, I hated maa for 18 years because I thought she had hurt you," Ranbir paused. Nachiket was both confused and concerned. "I disrespected her, made her life miserable, because I had seen you being miserable because of her." He again took a pause.
"What do you want to say, Ranbir?" Nachiket asked, having no idea where this conversation was going.
"What I'm saying Dad is, I'll do the same for her too," Ranbir's eyes were bored into Nachiket now. Ranbir knew he couldn't falter now. Nachiket couldn't understand what he was talking about.
Ranbir continued, "I saw Mom's face when you went to take the phone number of those girls yesterday," Nachiket face had gone emotionless. "I love both Mom and you, Dad. And I don't ever want to choose between either of you, " He took another pause, eyes trained on his Dad's face, "But after yesterday, if I ever have to choose, I'll choose mom,"
Nachiket stood there for a long time, looking at his son, whose determined eyes told him that whatever he had just said, he had meant it. And he also saw something else, a disappointment. Unintentionally, in his anger yesterday, he had not just hurt Ragini, he had hurt his children too.
"I am with Ranbir Bhai, Dad," Suhani came to stand beside Ranbir. Nachiket looked at his daughter. "Promise us that you'll never hurt Mom again,"
The tea in Nachiket's hands was cold now. He looked past Ranbir and Suhani, at the table where his family was sitting. Ragini was laughing on something. He could see her, but she couldn't. And he realized something at that moment and smiled looking at his children standing before him. Now he knew Ragini would always be taken care of, and his children would never let any harm come to her.
"What I did yesterday was something I shouldn't have done," he started saying, "I have apologized to your mom, and I am sorry to you too," He said, looking at both of them. "I'll never hurt your mom again," he continued, "And you have my permission to scream at me if I ever do hurt her, intentionally or unintentionally," he smiled.
Suhani smiled back and hugged him, "Thanks, Dad,"
Ranbir thanked him too and asked them to go back to the table. Nachiket picked up another cup of tea for his wife.
