At the hospital
Ragini entered the hospital.
"Good morning Ragini!" she heard Devika's voice who was coming towards her.
"Devika..! Good morning! I'm so sorry Devika..tumhari scooty..tum hospital kaise aayi?" said Ragini as she kept her hand on her shoulder.
"Ragini! Tum bhi na..koi problem nahi hai..it happens! Aur mujhe yaha..RK ne drop kiya hai..Dr. Neil ne use bataya ki meri scooty kharab ho gayi hai. To isliye RK mujhe lene aaye the ghar pe. Aur unhone apne driver ko bheja hai..scooty repair karwane. Shaam tak repair bhi ho jayegi..Don't worry!" Said Devika
Ragini sighed a breathe of relief and smiled.
"Accha Ragini.. Ab mujhe ek patient attend karna hai..ok? Bye dear!" She said bidding a good bye.
"Bye..!" Ragini said as she made her way to the reception to sign in. As she was signing she saw that Dr. Neil K column was not yet signed for today.
Ab tak nahi aaya? Aaj hospital nahi aana hai kya? her thoughts were disturbed as she heard a husky Hi. She immediately turned around and was unconsciously delighted to see that man.
"Hi! Miss Ragini Patel." again the same husky voice as he signed the register.
She just smiled in reply. He was wearing a white shirt with a black blazer. She registered this and turned to the receptionist.
"Suno, Woh saare newly admitted patients ki register mere cabin me bhej dena thik hai?" she said as she picked her purse to leave.
"Ragini.." called Nachiket as soon as he found her ready to leave.
She turned around to him.
"Chalo na..tumhare cabin me chalke baat karte hai" he said as he himself made his way towards her cabin.
Ise kya hogaya? Mujhse kya baat karni hai? She thought as she walked behind him towards the cabin.
In her cabin
"Kya hua Nachiket? Kya baat hai?" said a worried Ragini.
"Ragini wo actually kal Karna aur Dimpy ki marriage anniversary hai"
"Haa..yaad hai mujhe Nachiket. Tum yahi yaad dilane ke liye aaye ho?" she said as she cleaned the little mess on her table.
"Offcourse not! Mujhe say is..mujhe kuch sujh nahi raha ki un dono ke liye konse gifts lene chahiye. I mean Karan ke gifts to phir bhi main manage kar leta..par Dimpy! I really don't know mujhe kya khareedna hai..I'm just so confused Ragini!" he said coming towards her.
"Nachiket.. isme main kya help kar sakti hu? Tumhe dene hai gifts..you decide. Tum chaho to I'll give you ideas so as what to buy.."
"Ragini.. usse kuch nahi hoga. I'll get even more confused." He said sitting restlessly on the chair.
A moment of silence passed away.
"Ragini.. if you don't mind, tum chalogi mere saath..shopping karne? Tumhari choice sabko pasand aati hai. Koi tension hi nahi rahegi mujhe.." he said at last breaking the silence
"Nachiket.. main..iss waqt..tumhare saath.." she didn't know what to say. This was unexpected.
"Agar tumhe time ho to..aur agar tumhare pati allow.."
"Nachiket... Main yaha ki Admin head hu. Aise hi nahi jaa sakti. Mujhe sir se puchna hoga.." she said dialing a number on the landline.
Nachiket shoved his shoulder as if to say "As you wish"
She had a conversation with Dr.Aman. She looked contented as she hung up the call.
"Kya hua? Tumhare sir ne permission nahi.."
"I am coming!" she didn't let him complete his sentence and straight away agreed to go.
"Seriously?" he said with an astonishing expression.
"Haa! Karan aur Dimpy ke liye...! Ab chalo! Nahi to aate aate bohot der ho jayegi." she said as a slight smile crept on her face.
"Let's go then!" He said with enthusiasm.
They both left for the shopping mall.
At the mall
Nachiket and Ragini entered the mall through the grand entrance. The mall had total 7 floors. The top-most floor
was completely devoted to the grand food court that offered large number of cuisine. The mall had a number of
international coffee houses. Also, there were umpteen number of game options for the kids and adults both.
They both arrived near the lift. As they entered the lift, there were two more people along with the liftman.
"5th floor.." said Ragini.
The lift started. Suddenly everyone of them got confused when they heard liftman chanting a mantra.
"Om jai jagdish hare,
Swaami jai jagdish hare,
Bhakt jano ke sankat,
Das jano ke sankat,
Kshan me dur kare,
Om jai jagdish hare..!" The liftman was praying to god wholeheartedly with his eyes closed.
Everyone of them exchanged confused looks.
"Bhaaisaab..aap thik to hai? Achaanak se bhagwaan ko itna yaad kyu kar rahe hai aap?" asked Nachiket
"To aur kya kare saab! Yeh lift hai hi aisi..kabhi bhi band pad jaati hai.." said the liftman
"Kya??" said Nachiket with a giggle.
He looked towards Ragini. She looked scared..very scared.
"Bhaiyya..sach keh rahe hai aap? Yeh lift band padti hai?" she asked the liftman with the same scary expression.
"Arrey kya bataaye memsaab..badi hi ajeeb lift hai..chalte chalte band padd jaati hai, aur jab out of order ka board lagta hai..to achanak se chal padti hai. Mujhe to lagta hai, ki yeh lift shaapit hai!" said the liftman widening his eyes.
This scared everyone a bit even Ragini ; except Nachiket.
"Arrey bhaisaab! Kyu logo ko dara rahe ho? Shaapit wagaira kuch nahi hota. Technical problem hai yeh. Aur agar aapko itna hi darr lagta hai, to aap bahar hi baitha kijiye!" advised Nachiket.
The 5th floor came. The lift stopped at the right place. Ragini took a sigh of relief!
Nachiket saw this reaction. Ragini bhi na, kabhi kabhi bacchon jaisa behave karti hai..lift se bhala koi darta hai! he chuckled at his own thought.
They both come outside the lift and started their shopping in the various shops. They purchased a lot of things for Karan and Dimpy to make their day special. They purchased a good personalized wedding anniversary plate. Nachiket chose a couple of T shirts for Karan as he most comfortable in the T shirts. While Ragini purchased a beautiful yellow saree from an another shop for Dimpy. Apart from the gifts they happened to purchase many little little things for themselves also.
They came outside the last shop as they were done with the shopping. Ragini was carrying two bags in both her hands while Nachiket had to bear with 4 such bags.
They arrived near the lift.
"Nachiket.. Mujhe lift se nahi jaana. Chalo na, seediyon se chalte hai!" She said as started walking towards the steps.
"Darr gayi naa?" He said with a wide smirk. She stopped and turned around.
"Main darr nahi rahi hu. Lekin jo kuch bhi uss liftman ne kaha hai, uske baad seediyon se jaana hi logical hai." She said again coming towards him.
"Ragini! Tum us liftman ki baaton me aa gayi! Arre in logo ko kaam karna accha nahi lagta hai. Issiliye logo ko darate hai..taaki kaam na karna pade. Ab tumhi dekh lo..wo liftman to hai bhi nahi iss lift me. Use pata hai..ek baar sabko dara diya to waapas koi nahi aayega..aur tum jaise log darr bhi jaate hai"
"Nachiket.. Maine kaha na! Main nahi darti," she said with the stubborn characteristic of Miss Ragini Patel.
"To chalo phir. Agar nahi darti, to chalo!" He was no less
"Thik hai!...chalo..ch..chalte hai" she said with a hesitant and worried voice.
Lift waale bhaaisaab ne to kamaal hi kar diya..meri sherni ko jo daraya hai thought a naughty Nachiket.
They began walking in the direction of the elevator. Ragini blinked, and followed. They stopped at the elevator, pressing the button for it to open. She glanced up at him momentarily, curiously, before diverting her attention back to the now open elevator. They both stepped in, silently.
It wasn't until now that she noticed that the lights were flickering. Ragini's eyes widened for just a second as she took this in, but she quickly dismissed it. It was probably nothing. Well, that was what she thought, until the lights in the elevator went out, and the machine immediately came to a stop. It shook vigorously for a few seconds, and she clutched the wall in surprise. She glanced over at Nachiket who looked just as surprised Ragini suddenly felt mild nervousness bubble up inside her as her eyes darted to and fro.
The lights flickered on again, and she was finally able to breathe. She exhaled deeply, her gaze once again landing on Nachiket. Neither said a word to each other. Suddenly, that silence was broken by two words.
"It stopped." Nachiket stated simply. He blinked, his mind fully registering his words.
"Ragini.. Lift...it stopped " His eyes widened, and so did hers.
She gasped quietly, placing a hand over her mouth "Nachiket!!! Oh god."
Nachiket stepped forward to the closed door of the elevator and began banging his fist against it, "Hello!!! Koi hai? HELLPPP!" No response from outside.
He looked at Ragini. Shock was dawned on her face. She was just staring at the floor.
"Ragini.." he said coming back towards her
"Kaha tha na maine...kaha tha maine! Suna tumne? Nahi! Kyuki tumhe to humesha apni mann ki karni hoti hai..ab dekho phass gaye na! Nachiket!!! Tumhe samaj raha hai iska matlab? Lift me phas chuke hai hum! Bahar nikalna kitna mushqil hai pata bhi hai tumhe??" she was all worried, irrirated and teary eyed.
"Ragini.. Suno meri baat..itna darne ki jaroorat nahi hai. Hum 5 minute main bahar nikal jaayenge!" said Nachiket as he continued to jab at the lift buttons..quite vigorously.
"Nachiket..." she approached the lift buttons where he was and took a deep breath to boost up the confidence a little.
"Itna zor se karoge to aur kharab ho jayegi..Hato..let me try." she gestured him to give way for her hand and he did.
She started pressing and holding the open doors button, waiting for the doors to open, but to no avail. Then she tried jabbing at the rest of the buttons, hoping that if it wouldn't open, maybe the lift would atleast move.
They both waited for results, but none came. She tried the emergency call button but got no reply from the other side. She finally gave up and turned back frowning at Nachiket.
"Main bhi koi technician nahi hu!" her frown softened after hearing what he said.
Nachiket again started jabbing the buttons with various presure patterns hoping that at least one pattern would work.
She glanced at the shut doors of the lift, then at Nachiket jabbing the buttons, then back at the doors.
"Maine kaha na..usse kuch nahi hoga! Come help me try force these doors open.." Nachiket looked at her with a surprised look, as if he was thinking why he hadn't thought of that, and came to where she stood infront of the doors.
They simultaneously hooked the ends of our fingers at the edge of each door in the micro gap between them and started pulling at opposite directions. It seemed like they were sealed shut because they wouldn't budge no matter how hard they pulled. When they finally gave up, Ragini walked angrily to the other side of the lift and cursed with frustration.
"Nachiket!! I need to get out of this lift!" she said as she got up again and started banging against the doors.
"Koi hai!!! Help! Hum yaha andar phass gaye hai...arrey koi to aao!!" She banged the doors so hard that the whole lift started shaking, causing Nachiket to get worried. He rushed to her and tried pulling her away from the doors but she ignored him.
"Ragini..!!!" He shouted as he grabbed her shoulders and pulled her off the doors with such force that she tripped backwards on Nachiket onto the floor.
She landed on top of Nachiket. Their eyes met..hers were teary, his were surprised..they both were shocked. After the shock of what happened passed, she managed to get up as she didn't wanted her blush to be caught by Nachiket. But he did see and that unconsciously made him delighted.
She started sobbing and hugging her knees on the floor.
He immediately kneeled next to her and apologised a hundred times. When she finally got a hold of her emotions, she looked up from her knees and looked at him with a dead expression.
There was an awkward silence for quite some time. He finally stood up from where he was and walked back to the doors. He looked intently at them, then all over the lift, looked at Ragini who was irritated to no bounds, then he sighed deeply.
"Ragini..I think we should try call for help with our phones." he said with his lips pressed tightly together in effort to keep a straight face, he took out his phone from the pocket and so did she. He looked at the empty signal bars which was not at all unexpected. He still tried to call Karan, but the screen flashed a sign that said there was no phone signal so the person he was calling could not be reached.
" Ragini hum lift main hai, no luck for us." he said sadly as he looked back at Ragini who was looking disappointingly at her own phone.
He dropped his hands back to his sides and huffed. "Lagta hai ki..ab jab tak koi humein bachane nahi aata, tab tak yahi rehna padega Ragini."
"Haa..kisiko to hamari yaad aayegi! Lekin tumne kisiko bataaya tha ki hum kaha jaa rahe hai?" she said with a scary expression.
"Haa..RK ko pata hai ki main yaha aane waala tha..lekin Ragini.. Usse to sham ko hi meri yaad aayegi...jab main ghar nahi phochunga...tab..." he said with his eyes wide which scared her even more.
"Shaam ko??" she somehow gasped in fear..."Nahi Nachiket.. Dr Aman ko pata hai na ki main tumhare saath hu..to agar hum dono hospital jaldi nahi pohoche to jarur woh RK ya Karan se contact karenge..At least shaam tak nahi rukna padega na?" She shared her feelings with a worried voice and a confused face. She hoped Nachiket finds her theory agreeable.
"Ho sakta hai..lekin Ragini.. Just accept...2-3 ghante to lag hi jayenge iss sab main." He tried to be as practical as possible. He didn't want to give her fake hopes as this was the worst situation in which they were stuck..hardly anything good could happen.
He proceeded to sit own against the wall of the lift and stare at his phone
again. She looked at him and sighed, thinking how 'fortunate' she was for today. She couldn't take it anymore, so she closed her eyes and focused on breathing, trying to clear her unrelaxed mind. After a few seconds, there was
no more noise. After a while of twiddling with his phone, Nachiket dropped it onto to his lap and looked up at Ragini. She opened her eyes and looked his way, only to be met by his eyes looking back at her.
His eyes were just as cute and pretty as she thought when they were teen. They were so full of emotion and meaning.
They stared into eachothers' eyes for a few seconds Ragini looked away breaking the stare, as if embarrassed.
They both stared off into space as he asked a question with a teasing grin.
"Are you scared?"
"Kya?" Ragini glanced over at him with a puzzled look. Nachiket shrugged her shoulders, and smirked as he turned to face Ragini.
"Are you scared?" he repeated. He
motioned towards the space as he continued.
"I mean, lights dim hai.. it's a small space, and I'm the only company you have." he tilted his head, shooting her a playful look.
Ragini bowed her head, her gaze settled on the ground. She compensated the question for only a second before she realized that she wasn't scared at all. Strange. Usually, anyone would freak out in a situation like this, but she found herself perfectly comfortable. Well, maybe not perfectly. It was still a kind of fear whether they will get out of here on time or not and moreover she was experiencing an awkward situation with this particular person.
"No." She spoke quietly, "Mujhe bilkul bhi darr nahi lag raha hai"
Nachiket sent her a pleasantly surprised look, along with a small smile.
"Tumhe darr nahi.." He was disturbed as a loud distant boom went off from the other side of the doors. The whole
elevator shook like an earthquake just happened.
"Nachiket!!!" Ragini gasped loudly and couldn't think straight as she was so afraid. As she held tightly onto the side railing above her, she felt someone's arms wrap around her securely, but she was too distracted to notice.
The lights started flickering and she prayed that they wouldn't go out. To their luck, they eventually stopped flickering and didn't go out. Her heartbeat had escalated and she was breathing heavily after the shock of what happened.
"Yeh kya tha !?" she whispered as she slowly turned to Nachiket, only to find his face inches away from hers.
Only then did she notice he had his arms protectively around her. She could feel his warm body heat from their skin contact which made her shiver slightly. Her instincts acted quickly as she shoved him off her right away.
"Ouuchh!" Nachiket banged against the wall after being shoved with such force and he looked so surprised as he was caught off guard.
She noticed this.
"Nachiket.." She said as she tried to pull him up by helding his shoulders. "Sorry! Wo main..mujhe.."
"Ragini Patel! Tum na bohot irrirating ho by god! Ek to madad karo aur upar se dhakke bhi khao..!" he said making himself sit in a comfortable position.
Ragini glared at him.
"Kya tha yeh??" she said to change the topic.
"Lagta hai badi hi ghatiya lift hai..kuch sahi nahi hai iss lift me toh..!" he said with an irritation again twiddling in his phone to check for the signals.
She did'nt say anything. It was he who forced her to go from the elevator knowing that the lift may be faulty. God had given a hint to them through the liftman..but no! Audacity of this man..!
She closed her eyes and rested her head at the wall. Nachiket looked up to her as he found no signal. He looked at her neatly, now that her eyes were closed and she couldn't see him seeing her.
She had a soft face, with rounded cheek bones, proportionally slim nose, soft pouty pink lips..her soft lips..! They were always tasty.. he thought.
Her rounded chin is complimented by her easy, charming smile. Wondrous oceans of blue.. gaze out in playful curiousity as she smiles. The most different and beautiful quality of her was her highly trimmed eyebrows. Her brows give her a smart look
Her beautiful hair..groomed and shining brilliantly, which crops her gentle face; with perfectly cut tips. The uniform hair spills down between her shoulder where the shortest strands just barely tickle the skin of her collar bone.
Though now she had her hair open, she had changed the hairstyle into a perfect beautiful bun which he adored. she looks very decent and classy in that bun
Just then, she opened her eyes. She caught him staring her. He quickly looked away and checked his phone as if he was busy with it.
She was amused but she didn't say anything. She just dug into her purse, remembering that she had packed some lunch for herself. From the purse, she produced a tupperware.
"Aloo ke parathe hai..tumhe bhook lagi hogi na? Khaoge?" said Ragini as she opened the tiffin.
"Wow! Obviously!" Nachiket turned closer toward her and was surprised to see what she was holding. And that is when the awkward atmosphere totally disappeared. They both ate happily, enjoying the food.
"Wow, Agar hum yaha se bachke bahar nikle, to maa se keh dena ki parathe bohot hi swadisht bane the" Nachiket said while hungrily stuffing himself with his share of paratha.
"Its a miracle you happened to bring these with you."
"Hmm..maa ne hi banaye hai..mujhe late ho gaya tha na aaj. And what? Agar yaha se bahar nikle to ka kya matlab hai?? Tumhe yahi rahna hai kya??"she said as continued to eat.
"Chodo na Ragini. Waise bhi koi fayda nahi jhagda karke..This is more than I would've hoped for in this situation. Mmm, delicious!" she paused from eating and watched him eat. She smiled with amusement. The way to a man's heart truly is through his stomach.
Seeing as he was too busy to notice, she took that opportunity to properly examine him. He was wearing a black blazer and that white shirt. The first button was open by now. He always managed to lure her into his charm.
His hair was its usual black colour, styled straight and short. Just how she liked it. Hey bhagwan! what am I thinking!? It looked so soft and feathery, that she was tempted to touch it. But she wasn't that crazy. Not yet.
She then proceeded to examine his face.His slightly frowning forehead, his eyes, his handsome nose, his cheeks, his lips. His soft lips. The ones that opened to reveal his husky voice that she always longed to hear.
"Ragini.. Khao na! Warna sab khatam ho jayega!" He said with a chuckle as he observed that she was not eating from the past 20 seconds.
"Haa..kha rahi hu..!" she said with a wide smile as she started eating the paratha.
After eating, they both sat back against the same wall, side-by-side, both not quite satisfied but grateful for the food. Nachiket turned his face to her and she too turned to him. "What now?" she asked.
Nachiket bit his lip and looked up to the ceiling..he thought something..decided something..then looked back at her.
"Ragini..hume yaha phase hue kitni der hui hai?"
She checked my watch for the umpteenth time.
"Nachiket, about 3 hours already."
Nachiket sighed deeply.
"How about we figure out how to get out of here?" he said looking back towards the ceiling.
