Ragini stood in front of Nishi's bedroom. The door was closed, just the way Nachiket liked it. She also used to sleep like that but ever since she got the full responsibility of taking care of her family, she prefers to sleep with the door a bit ajar.
She sighed and knocked on the door. There was no response; she tried again but still no sign of his voice. Ragini hesitated a bit whether to open the door or not. What if he is awake and sees me there or what if I disturb him in his sleep. Nachiket did not like it whenever someone would wake him up from his deep sleep, because rarely he would get a good night sleep.
After a minute of thinking, Ragini took a deep sigh and turned the doorknob, opened the door very carefully and peeped in. Trying not to make any sound, she slowly walked up to him.
The view she was having now made her smile instantly. His head was turned to the side of the window where the rays of sunlight shined on his handsome and peacefully face. She stood there for the longest time, just watching him sleeping. She hadn't seen this for so many years. Automatically, her hand touched his face and caressed his hair. A small smile played on his lips as if he knew what was going on. Nachiket moaned a bit, enjoying every bit of it.
Ragini quickly took away her hand. She really did not want to wake him up but she had no other choice.
'Nachiket...utho'' She said in a whisper but this man would not wake up that easy. Again she sighed and tried one more time 'Utho Nachiket, subah ke 8 baaj gaye hai. Utho abhi'' and she shook him by his shoulder.
Nachiket moved a bit. 'Mmm, kya yaar Ragini, sone do na please''
This made Ragini giggle. It was almost impossible to wake him up from such a deep sleep. 'Come on, wake up. Mujhe bahot saara kaam hai'' She walked away but before she could move a step, he grabbed her by the arm and pulled her on top of him.
'Kya kar rahe ho Nachiket'' Ragini didn't expect this.
'Mein itne achi neend mein tha Ragini and you woke me up from it...iski sazaa toh mein tumhe doonga'' He said with a mischievous smile. Both her hand were on his chest which he had locked with his own hands. This made her unable to get out of his grip.
'Sazaa? Kyun?! I was trying to wake you up'' She said in her defense.
'Is this the way to wake up your husband? Na koi good morning smile aur na koi good morning...''
'Kya kar rahe ho...'' Not sure what he was up to.
Nachiket leaned a bit forward, his face and lips just a few inches away from hers. He looked at her face, slowly shifting his gaze from her eyes to her lips.
'Na koi good morning...kiss'' He leaned forward to capture her soft pink lips with his.
'Come on Nachiket utho na please'' Ragini whined a bit.
'Kya Ragini, sone do na. Kyun mujhe...'' Nachiket shifted a bit and turned around only to see Ragini standing next to him and not on...top of him.
His expressions were a mix of shock and confusion. Ragini yahan kadi hai lekin woh toh mere uppar...aur yeh saari toh usne bilkul nahin pehne thi.
'Good morning Nachiket'' She said with a small smile. 'Sorry, lekin I had to wake you up kyunki 8 baaj gaye hai aur mein late ho rahi hoon. Iss liye...'' She looked at Nachiket who still had that confused look on his face.
'Are you okay? Kuch chahiye tumhe?''
He tried to reply as normal as possible. 'No, thank you. Thanks...I am fine''
Ragini walked to the cupboard to get a towel and other toiletries for him. 'Yeh towel mein yahan rak deti hoon. Aur baaqi cheezein yahan bathroom mein hai. Take a shower, if you want''
She made her way to the door but was stopped by his voice. 'Ragini...'' She turned around, looked at him and waited for him to say anything. He also kept staring because he really didn't know why he actually called her name. 'Uhmm...kuch nahin. Nothing''
There was no way Ragini was able to understand this behavior of his. Yes, at times he could act weird but that was funny weird. Now he is just being confused and weird.
Yeh Nachiket ko kya ho gaya hai? Maybe because I woke him up... She didn't give her thoughts too much attention since breakfast needs to be ready before him. She made her way to the kitchen and started to prepare the food.
Nachiket got up and sat on the bed. Toh woh ek sapna tha? Matlab, mein actually itne saalo baad Ragini ko iss tarah se mere sapno mein aayi thi.
This thought made him quite happy. Obviously it was not the first time he dreamt of Ragini. In fact, he would dream about her very often, but after a long time he had this kind of dream. Nachiket just sat there on the bed for a few minutes thinking about his beautiful dream. It made him feel different; joyous. With a satisfied smile on his face he got up and walked out of the bedroom, his mind still occupied with the dream.
Ragini was setting up the table for breakfast and saw a smiling Nachiket walking into the room, still wearing his clothes from the night before. She noticed that he still hadn't showered.
'Kuch chahiye?'' She asked him.
'Mmm no, I just want to take a shower'' He replied absentmindedly.
'Haan theek hai, toh phir bathroom mein jao na. Yahan kyun aa gaye tum?'' She said with a confusing smile.
Nachiket looked around and all of a sudden he realized that he was standing in the kitchten. Mein yahan kya kar raha hoon? Yahan toh koi shower whower nahin hai.
This weird behavior of his made her giggle. Nachiket noticed and being a Khanna, he obviously couldn't take it. 'Hass kyun rahe ho? Haan theek hai na, toh bathroom yahan nahin hain lekin phir bhi mein yahan aa gaya hoon...kyun ki...kyun ki...kyun ki mein mere kapde nahin hain'' He quickly made something up but actually it was true. He had no other clothes than the shirt he is wearing.
'Kapde nahin matlab?''
'Matlab, I don't have any other clothes so toh mein kaise...''
'Tum jao andar, mein kuch karti hoon'' She signaled him to go back.
'Tum kya karogi?'' He asked confused. 'No no, I don't want anything from Dr. Aman. Mein ghar jaa ke nahaa loonga'' He said a bit arrogantly.
Ragini sighed. She had the solution for his problem only if he would listen to her. 'Mein keh rahi hoon na ke I will solve it. Tum baz jao, mein aati hoon'' And she walked into her own bedroom.
Nachiket turned around and went back to Nishi's room. Ragini kya karne jaa rahi hai. Kahin woh saach mein Dr.Aman ka shirt mujhe toh nahin degi. I rather walk around naked.
Ragini was in her room and took something out from under the bed. It was a very nice antique box. She looked at it and a sad smile appeared on her face. The key to her treasure box was in the last drawer of her nightstand. She unlocked the box and opened it; Photo albums, drawings, old notes from Nachiket to her, some cinema tickets, old toys of Ranbir and Agham, their very first clothes and many more. She had collected all these things and kept it safe in there for years. Each and every single piece meant the world to her, because it was some of the last memories she had of her two boys and those times with Nachiket. Whenever she would feel sad or miss them terrible, she would open the box and go through all those beautiful moments. It was her hidden box with all the memories which were a treasure for her...
Nachiket became a bit impatient now. Ragini had been gone for a good 10 minutes and there was still no sign of her with whatever solution she had for his problem. 'Ragini! Kaha ho tum, I'm still waiting!'' he yelled from the other room.
Ragini was so lost in her memories that she completely forgot about Nachiket waiting for her. 'Haan, aati hoon. Just a minute!'' She replied. Quickly she wiped away her tears. She couldn't let him know that she was crying, otherwise he would want to know what the reason was and somehow she didn't want to tell him about her treasure box. At the bottom of the box, under that pile, was a plastic bag. Carefully she took out the bag and took out a piece of clothing from it; it was Nachiket's old sweater...her favorite black sweater. During the separation she had packed this with her stuff as well. It was her only touchable memory of his...
Before Nachiket would go crazy, she put all the stuff back in the box, closed it and shove it back under the bed. Ragini composed herself and gave a quick look in the mirror. Yes, she looked fine and there was so sign of redness in her eyes.
She walked in to Nishi's room and saw an impatient Nachiket waiting for her. 'Ye loh...I hope this is good enough'' She handed him the sweater.
Nachiket unfolded the sweater 'Meine kaha tha Ragini, ke mujhe Dr. Aman ke...'' It was only then when he realized that he had seen this sweater before. After a good few seconds it hit him that this is his sweater, his black sweater. He looked at her but didn't know what to say.
'Yeh toh mera hai...toh phir tumhare paas...'' He was a bit taken aback with what he just saw.
Even she didn't know what to reply so she played it safe. 'Haan woh uhm...jab hum alag huye teh toh phir yeh shayad, ghalti se, mere saman ke saath mix ho gaya tha. Aur tab se lekar aaj tak, yeh mere paas hai'' She tried to avoid his gaze. To escape any more intriguing questions from him, Ragini quickly went back to the kitchen. 'Ab tum jaldi se tayar ho jao. Tab tak mein breakfast bana deti hoon''
Ragini Patel, ghalti se, kuch bhi nahin mix huya tha. You couldn't look me into the eyes, isse toh saaf pata chalta hai ke tum jooth bol rahi thi. Mein jaanta hoon ke tumhe yeh sweater bahot pasand hai, iss liye tumne yeh apne paas rakha. And he went in the bathroom with a happy smile on his face.
In the kitchen
Thank God, ke mein Nachiket ko koi aur mauka nahin diya aur sawaal karne ke liye. Warna toh usse aaj pata chal jaata ke woh sweater mein apne paas rakha itne saalon se.
With that relieved thought, Ragini continued to make breakfast. However, she was not sure what to prepare. Back in the days, both of them usually had a healthy breakfast since both were in the medical field so they were keen on eating good healthy stuff. It was only in the weekends, mostly on Sundays, were she would make something special for breakfast. She decided to go for the latter.
After 15 minutes - Nishi's bathroom
'Ragini! Ragini!'' He shouted from the bathroom.
Ragini was busy preparing the food and startled. Now what does he want. She made her way to Nishi's bathroom. 'Kya hai, itna chilla kyun rahe ho?''
'Mera towel bathroom ke bahar reh gaya. Tum please zara mujhe de do'' He replied back from under the shower.
Ragini sighed and shook her head. She looked here and there and found the towel in the same place where she had left it; on top of the dresser. She picked up the towel and knocked on the door. Nachiket unlocked it from the other side of the door and opened it. Ragini put her hand through the door, facing the other way. 'Yeh lo''
With his right hand, Nachiket got hold of her arm instead of the towel. The unexpected touch of his wet hand on her arm, made Ragini a bit conscious. His hand, which was right under her elbow, slowly slid down her arm toward the towel. The cold wet drops left Ragini with a warm feeling. A sensation runs through her body which made her warm from the inside. With closed eyes she enjoyed every second of the new unknown feeling...
All this time, Nachiket just waited for her to close the door so he could proceed. 'Ragini...Are you still there?''
Ragini was totally in lost in sensation and did not hear his voice at all. 'Ragini?!'' this time he asked a bit louder. With that she jolted out of her moment and noticed that she was still standing there. Even worse, she still had her arm stretched out. Quickly she too her arm back and closed the door.
Before she went back to the kitchen, she needed a few second to get her breathing under control.
Yeh kya tha? Achanak, mujhe kya ho gaya hai? Yeh eshaas, yeh dhadkanein, yeh mere saasein...Nachiket has touched me before, lekin jiss tarah se woh aaj mujhe chua. Nahin, yeh nahin ho sakta. Nachiket ko mujhse door rehna hoga, he has to stay away from me. In order to distract herself, she went back to continue with breakfast.
Accha, so my touch does still affect her. No, it wasn't done deliberately, but this was a good sign for him to know that their chemistry had not died at all. Nachiket stepped out of the bathroom wearing his, no, her favorite sweater. He gave a final look in the mirror and when everything looked good and fresh, he made his way to the kitchen. Breakfast was about to be served.
In the kitchen
'Good morning'' A cheerful Nachiket walked in and greeted Ragini.
Ragini was back to her old self but having him around after that 'moment'' did not make things easy for her. 'Good morning. Tum yahan baitho, breakfast is almost ready' She showed him the chair where he could sit.
Nachiket was and is still a man of a few morning routines; after his bath or shower, he likes to have his breakfast but that also in a particular way. At first, he prefers to drink a glass of lukewarm water preferably with a slice of lemon in it. After that, he will have his yogurt with blueberries and raspberries. And after that, he will eat a toast with eggs or something else. At the end, he wants to enjoy his morning chai.
In the very first years of their marriage, Ragini could not believe what she saw. A man who has all these kinds of routines is something which she hadn't seen much. But this was Nachiket Khanna for her, deal with it or not. She chose to deal with and soon she got used to his habits, rituals and routines even though some are still very weird to her.
Before Nachiket took a seat he asked for the morning paper. Ragini told him to check at the coffee table. He grabbed the paper, sat on the chair, poured a glass of water for himself and started to read the newspaper.
His face was toward the main entrance; therefore he couldn't see what Ragini was doing. For this moment, she was not doing anything. She had turned around and stared at his back. She felt a mix of emotions; a happy one since this was the view she was used to. A sad one since this is not how it is now. A confused one since this makes her happy yet scared... Scared of her own feelings.
Nachiket was engrossed in the newspaper but he was sharp enough to catch the aroma of herbs and spices. 'Badi achhi khushboo aa rahi hain. Kya bana rahi ho?'' He turned around.
She also turned around and walked up to the table with a plate in her hand. 'Aloo ke parathe'' She placed the plate in front of him and gave him a small smile.
He looked back and forth from the plate to her. 'Yeh mere liye hai? Kyun aaj Sunday hai kya ya phir koi khaas din?'' He asked joyfully yet a bit perplexed.
Ragini could not let him know that she wanted to make his special favorite breakfast. Somehow she chose for this because it was the first night he stayed over at her house. That was more than special to her...
'Uhm nahin toh...we eat very often aloo ke parathe for breakfast'' She replied as casually as possible.
That was such a big lie. Even after their separation she continued with the healthy breakfast during the week and only in the weekends, they would have the special ones.
'Oh really...well then you have maintained yourself quite good'' He winked at her.
This made her turn red and she quickly made her way to the fridge. 'You want some orange juice? Freshly squeezed. Just the way you...'' Yeh mein kya bolne jaa rahi hoon? Control Ragini, Maa ne sirf kaha thi ke theek se baat karo na ke usko spoil karo. Aur mein yahan Mr. Khanna ke siwa kar rahi hoon.
'Just the way I like it'' He finished that for her. 'Yes, please. Kya pata ke yeh VIP treatment mujhe phir se milega bhi ya nahin'' He said playfully.
'Did you sleep well last night? Koi pareshaani toh nahin?'' She asked him.
'It was okay. You know me Ragini, aise kisi ke ghar mein raat ko rukna mujhe zyada acha nahin lagta''
Ragini couldn't believe what she just heard. How rude to say kisi ke ghar mein, matlab mera ghar is also a strange place for him. This really hurt her a lot. She tried her utmost best to make him feel comfortable and here he was showing attitude.
Nachiket tried to hide his smile because he very well knew that she was fuming with anger now.
She came back to him with his glass of orange juice and put it on the table. Not trying to make any eye contact at all since she was hurt and very angry. She turned around to get something but before she could move, he grabbed her arm. 'Baitho aur breakfast khao. Saare cheezein hain table pe. Ab chup chap baitho''
'Good morning Ra...'' This was definitely not the morning he had expected.
Ragini and Nachiket both looked at the door and saw Dr. Aman standing there. He noticed that Dr. Neil was holding her arm.
Thank God, Sir aap aa gaye hain.
Dr. Aman agar aap Ragini ke husband nahin hote toh phir yahan aane ke ijazat mein apko nahin deta.
Oh no, yeh morning ab kaisa good ho sakta hai. Dr. Neil yahan kya kar rahe hai. Oh no, ab yeh mujhe hazar sawal poochenge. Please God, aaj thoda reham kar.
'Aiiye aaiye Dr. Aman, yeh aap hi ka ghar toh hai'' Nachiket invited him to come and have breakfast with them.
'Haan haan ji, zaroor'' He replied awkwardly and took a seat opposite Dr. Neil.
Ragini politely asked him what he wanted to drink. 'Sir, aap kya lenge? Coffee, chai ya phir orange juice?''
'Tum baitho na Ragini, mein le loonga'' He stood up to get himself some orange juice. Ragini took a seat which was closer to Nachiket than to Dr. Aman.
All this while, Nachiket was looking at them very carefully. 'Mein kabse bol raha tha apke patni ko ke baith jao, par woh mere baat sunti hi nahin. Lekin jab apne kaha toh woh aapke baat ko mann gayi. Lagta hai aapke baaton mein jadoo hai Dr. Aman'' He said sarcastically.
Ragini did not like this at all. Nachiket always used to behave like this whenever Dr. Aman was around. Couldn't he just leave him alone?
Dr. Aman, on the other hand, had to play along. 'Itne saalon se hum ek saath joh hain, kuch toh assar hogi nah''
This was painful for both Nachiket and Ragini. She knew that this was a lie but still these things would hurt her. And he, well for him it would always be hell to see her with another man.
Dr. Aman came back and noticed the plate of aloo ke parathe. 'Kya baat hai Ragini, aaj special breakfast? Aaj toh Sunday nahin hain, phir kya baat hai?''
Within seconds Nachiket looked at Ragini with an I-knew-it look. She could not look back at him; instead she kept staring at the table.
Oh God, yeh apne kya keh diya Sir?!
Nachiket was now in a teasing mood. 'Kyun Dr. Aman. Apke ghar mein sirf Sundays aloo ke parathe hote hain?'' He gave a quick side glance at Ragini.
'Nahin mere ghar mein toh very often aloo ke parathe hote hai. Sunday ka koi zaroorat nahin''
'Lekin abhi abhi toh apne kahan ki sirf Sundays?'' Nachiket asked not quite sure what Dr. Aman meant.
Dr. Aman and Ragini exchanged glances. She signaled him something and he thought that he understood.
'Haan nahin, mera matlab hai ke mujhe aloo ke parathe bahot pasand hai iss liye mein har roz kha sakti hoon. Lekin Ragini sirf Sundays khaati hain'' Dr. Aman gave an unsure look at Ragini not knowing what was going on but he just hoped that it would work out well for her.
Nachiket did not need to ask anything more. He just got his answer.
All three of them started to have breakfast, in silence. To kill the awkwardness Nachiket started to talk. 'Waise Dr. Aman, kaal raat aapko koi problem nahin hua? Matlab, electricity cut ke wajah se?''
This got Dr. Aman confused. Why would he have any problem with a electricity cut and that too at night.
'Hmm, nahin toh. Mujhe kya problem hoga. Mein toh araam se apne bed pe so gaya tha'' He replied with a satisfied feeling.
'Lekin aap kab aaye teh? Mein aur Ragini toh bahot der se wahan baithe teh'' Nachiket got a bit suspicious now. Nothing seemed to make sense from whatever Dr. Aman was saying.
Before things would get worse, Ragini started to talk. 'Sir kya matlab hai ke woh hospital mein apne bed pe so gaya tha. The hospital is like a second home for him'' She tried to smile it away.
Dr. Aman was confused like never before. Mein kaal raat hospital mein kyun tha? Kahin koi emergency toh nahin tha? Nahin nahin...toh phir yeh kya baat kar rahe hain?
Ragini noticed the very confused looks of Dr. Aman and decided to talk to him in private.
'Sir, aap please ek minute ke liye aa sakte hain'' She signaled him to come with her. 'Nachiket, please excuse us. Hum abhi aate hain''
Nachiket did not bother to answer. He just continued with his breakfast and the newspaper.
Ragini's bedroom
'Yeh sab kya hai Ragini?! Dr. Neil itni subah subah yahan kya kar rahe hain? Matlab, I don't mind lekin woh mujhse aise ajeeb ajeeb sawal kyun karte hai?'' It was obvious that Dr. Aman was freaking out but that was the effect Dr. Neil had on him.
'Relax Sir. I will explain: Kal raat Nachiket dropped me off at home. Humare paas Devika ka scooty tha. Phir mausam bahot kharab hua. I told Nachiket ke it's not safe to go home. Iss liye who yahan rukna pada. He did ask ke Dr. Aman ko koi problem toh nahin hain, phir meine kahan ke nahin aap hospital mein rahenge. Iss liye, woh itne saare sawal kar rahe teh''
Dr. Aman was calmer now and also relieved. 'Accha accha, I got it. This makes sense. Thanks Ragini, warna pata nahin aaj kya hone wala tha. Matlab, you know how he is nah''.
Ragini gave him the obvious look. 'Haan sorry, of course, tum toh bilkul jaanti ho ke woh kaise hai. Anything else that I need to know?'' He just wanted to be sure this time.
'Hmm, nahin. Otherwise mein handle karti hoon'' She assured him.
'Okay thanks. Mein wapas jao, aloo ke parathe...''
'Haan of course, breakfast kijiye'' She smiled at hime. But Dr. Aman noticed something different in her eyes. 'All good Ragini? Kaal raat. tumhe toh koi problem nahin hua na?'' Dr. Aman asked with a genuine concern in his voice.
'No, I am fine Sir. In fact, mein khud usse kaha tha ke woh yahan ruk sakta hai''
'Okay good then. Toh phir mein sher, mera matlab hai Dr. Neil ke paas jata hoon''
Dr. Aman left the room and closed the door behind him.
Kya mein saach mein theek hoon? Pichle 24 ghante mein joh bhi kuch hua, aisa lagta hai ke zindagi badal gayi hai. Nachiket ko yahan rukna, aur phir woh saare baatein joh humne share ki. Bahot saalo baad mein usse iss tarah se dekha, he was vulnerable. Aisa lagta tha ke who baat karne chahte teh, uske liye zaroori tha. I am glad that I could be there for him, lekin anjaane mein yeh sab mujh par bhi assar ho raha hain. Woh bathroom, uska haath...uska sweater...aloo ke parathe...yeh mein kya kar rahi hoon? Jab hi mein Nachiket se door jaana chahti hoon, koi na koi reason aata hai, joh humein ek doosre ke qareeb laata hai. Aur mujhe acha bhi lagne laga hai. Aisa lagta hai ke mein phir se jee rahi hoon...
Ragini had a beautiful smile on her face; a smile that had disappeared throughout the years. A hidden treasure had just been discovered...
Nachiket couldn't help it but to feel a bit curious about what was going on in that room. He saw Dr. Aman coming out of the room without Ragini.
'Sab theek hai na?'' He asked a bit worried because she was not with him.
'Yes yes, all fine. Ragini will be here any minute'' And Dr. Aman continued with his delicious breakfast.
Nachiket folded the newspaper gulped down his lemon water and got up. He needed to call Karan to come and pick him up but his phone was dead since last night.
He was just about to knock on Ragini's room when she opened it. 'Oh sorry, lekin can I use your phone? Mein Karan ko phone karna chahta hoon''
'Haan haan, kyun nahin. Yeh lo'' She handed him over her phone and he went inside her room.
In the meanwhile, Dr. Aman was also done with his breakfast and helped Ragini cleaning the table.
There he was...Nachiket Khanna standing in Ragini Patel's room. It felt weird as if something was not normal, something was missing. There was absolutely nothing couple-ish about. He didn't open any drawers or her cupboard, but just by the feeling he could that this is not how a couple's room is supposed to be.
He sighed and called Karan. After the call he stepped out of the bedroom and did not like what he was seeing; Ragini and Dr. Aman cleaning up the table and kitchen.
'Ragini, Karan will be here soon'' He informed her.
'Theek hain, tab tak mein chai bana deti hoon'' But Nachiket was already gone.
He went to Nishi's room and kept himself busy with whatever. The real reason why he was here was because he couldn't watch his ex-wife and Dr. Aman together for too long. He did not like it and he would never bother to do so. In the hospital it was fine, they all were professionals but seeing them in the house doing the chorus together was too much for him.
Nachiket walked back and forth and suddenly stopped in front of the mirror. He looked at himself and again to the sweater he was wearing. That reminded him of how happy the thought had made him when Ragini indirectly said that she had kept it all these years.
It cheered him up again and the jealous feeling slowly vanished.
Ragini came to him to let him know that Karan had arrived. She had heard the honk from his car from downstairs. To her surprise she saw a smiling Nachiket in front of the mirror. This made herself smile too. What a lovely sight it was...she could just stare at him for hours.
It was the honk again which made her come back to reality.
'Nachiket, Karan aa gaye hai. Woh neeche car mein hain'' She went inside the room and got his blazer and phone just in case he would forget.
'Okay good. Toh mein chalta hoon'' He stepped out of the room and said bye to Dr. Aman. 'See you later at the hospital, Dr. Aman''
Ragini followed Nachiket to the door. He was about to go but she made him stop. 'Rukho Nachiket. Tum kuch bhool rahe ho...'' She gave him his phone and blazer.
'Thanks, mein almost bhool hi gaya tha'' He smiled thankfully. 'Kaal raat aur aaj ke liye, thanks...''
She just smiled in reply and turned around to go back.
'Ragini...'' She automatically turned around.
'Tum aaj subah mujhse poocha ke kaal raat mein theek tha ya nahin...saach saach batao toh aisa laga ke aaj phir se jeene laga hoon...Aur haan, woh morning chai, phir kabhi'' He winked at her and left.
Ragini hadn't even the time to say anything. He was already gone. She was so upset about his reply in the morning but whatever he had just said took away all the anger...
