Chapter 4 - Echoes of the Past

The following days turned into a whirlwind of planning and investigation. With each meeting, Khushi felt the urgency of their mission grow stronger. She and Arnav spent hours poring over family documents, speaking with elders, and piecing together the fragmented history that linked their families. Each discovery brought them closer to the truth, yet it also deepened the tension as the shadows of the past loomed ever larger.

One evening, as they gathered in the study once again, Khushi couldn’t shake the feeling that they were on the brink of something significant. Arnav leaned over the table, a series of papers spread out before them. “We have to get to the bottom of this,” he said, tapping a finger on one particularly yellowed document. “This letter mentions a meeting between our grandparents and the Malhotras - a family that’s been involved in this rivalry since the beginning.”

“The Malhotras?” Khushi echoed, her brow furrowing. “I’ve heard whispers about them. They’re known for their ruthless business tactics.”

“Exactly,” Arnav replied, his jaw tightening. “They would do anything to get what they want. If they were involved in the betrayal, we need to find out why.”

“Should we confront them?” Khushi suggested, a thrill of adrenaline coursing through her. “If they’re hiding something, we might be able to get answers directly from them.”

Arnav’s expression darkened. “That’s risky. We need more information before we approach them. We don’t know how far they’re willing to go to protect their secrets.”

Khushi felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. They were stepping into dangerous territory, but her instincts told her it was time to take a bold step. “Then let’s dig deeper. We can talk to some of the family friends who might have been around during the time our grandparents were active.”

Arnav nodded, his eyes narrowing in thought. “We could also ask Anjali and Akash to reach out to their contacts. The more perspectives we have, the better.”

As they strategized, Khushi felt a warmth building between them. Their shared purpose, combined with the adrenaline of uncovering family secrets, was forging an unexpected bond. She couldn’t ignore the way her heart raced when he was near, the way his focused gaze sent shivers down her spine. But alongside that thrill was the gnawing worry of what lay ahead.

Later that evening, they gathered once again, this time joined by Anjali and Akash, who brought their own insights. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as they laid out what they had learned.

“We found out that the Malhotras are hosting a gala this weekend,” Anjali announced, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “It’s a social event, but it could also serve as a perfect opportunity for us to learn more about them.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Khushi said, her mind racing. “We can mingle, gather intel, and if we’re lucky, overhear something useful.”

“I’ll arrange for us to attend,” Akash added. “We need to be careful, though. If the Malhotras are as dangerous as we think, we’ll need to blend in and not raise any suspicions.”

Arnav looked thoughtful. “What if we position ourselves as a new couple seeking connections in high society? It’s plausible given our recent engagement.”

“Perfect,” Khushi replied, her excitement bubbling over. “We can play the part while searching for answers.”

As they made their plans, Khushi felt a thrill course through her. The prospect of the gala loomed ahead, offering a chance to confront the shadows of their families while deepening her connection with Arnav.

The night of the gala arrived, and Khushi stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her dupatta. She wore a stunning yet simple cream and gold lehenga that flowed beautifully, the fabric shimmering as it caught the light. Her hair was styled elegantly, cascading down her back in soft waves. As she added the final touch - a pair of delicate jhumkas - she couldn’t help but feel a mix of nerves and excitement.

“Wow, Khushi! You look stunning!” Payal exclaimed, stepping into the room. “You’re going to turn heads tonight!”

“Thanks, Payal Dii,” Khushi said, blushing slightly. “I hope I can keep up with the expectations.”

“Just be yourself. You and Arnav make a great team,” Payal encouraged. “And remember, it’s not just about the glitz. You’re there to gather information.”

“I know,” Khushi replied, her heart racing at the thought of facing the Malhotras. “But a little glitz wouldn’t hurt, would it?”

Payal laughed. “Not at all! Just be careful out there.”

When Khushi finally met Arnav at the mansion, her breath caught in her throat. He was dressed in a tailored black suit that accentuated his broad shoulders, his dark hair neatly styled. The moment their eyes met, something electric passed between them.

“Ready?” he asked, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Khushi replied, her voice steady despite her racing heart.

They arrived at the Malhotra mansion, the grandeur of the place taking Khushi’s breath away. The entrance was adorned with twinkling fairy lights and floral arrangements that created an enchanting atmosphere. The sounds of laughter and music spilled into the night as they stepped inside.

As they moved through the crowd, Khushi marveled at the opulence around her. Guests mingled, laughter echoing through the grand hall. She could feel the weight of eyes on them as they introduced themselves as the new couple in town, eager to make connections.

“Let’s split up for a bit,” Arnav suggested. “I’ll check the bar for any familiar faces, and you can mingle with the ladies.”

“Sounds good,” Khushi said, feeling a flutter of excitement. “Just keep an eye out for anything unusual.”

As Khushi navigated through the crowd, she struck up conversations with several guests, carefully gauging their reactions. She asked subtle questions about the Malhotra family, trying to glean any insights into the family dynamics and the history they were trying to uncover.

After some time, Khushi found herself standing beside a group of women discussing the latest fashion trends. She listened attentively, her mind racing with thoughts of the mission at hand.

Suddenly, she caught sight of Arnav across the room, deep in conversation with a tall, imposing man. The man had an air of authority that made Khushi’s heart race. She recognized him immediately - the patriarch of the Malhotra family.

Khushi felt a surge of determination. She needed to get closer. As she maneuvered through the crowd, her heart pounded in her chest. The moment felt crucial, and she was determined to seize the opportunity.

“Excuse me,” she said politely to the group, making her way toward Arnav. The closer she got, the more she could hear snippets of their conversation.

“I’m sure your family is aware of the stakes, Arnav,” the patriarch Navin Malhotra said, his tone cool and measured. “The past has a way of catching up with us. Are you sure you’re prepared for the consequences?”

Khushi’s breath caught in her throat. She couldn’t just stand back and let this opportunity slip away. Gathering her courage, she approached them, her heart racing. “Arnav, there you are! I was looking for you.”

Arnav turned, his expression shifting to one of surprise and concern. “Khushi, what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to meet your new friend,” she said, forcing a smile as she extended her hand. “Hello, Mr. Malhotra. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

The man’s eyes narrowed slightly as he assessed her, a flicker of curiosity crossing his face. “Ah, the new bride-to-be. I’ve heard much about you.”

“Only good things, I hope,” Khushi replied, keeping her tone light even as her heart raced.

“Time will tell,” he said, his gaze piercing. “Tell me, Khushi, are you ready for the challenges that come with marriage?” An indirect taunt laid beneath the statement.

Khushi met his gaze, a mixture of defiance and determination rising within her. “I believe challenges are opportunities in disguise. Don’t you agree?”

Arnav’s expression shifted, pride shining in his eyes. Navin seemed momentarily taken aback, and Khushi seized the opportunity. “Speaking of challenges, I’d love to hear more about your family’s history. It must be fascinating to navigate such a legacy.”

As the conversation continued, Khushi felt a rush of exhilaration. She was stepping into uncharted territory, ready to uncover the truths that had long been buried. Whatever lay ahead, she was prepared to face it head-on, alongside Arnav.

~~

The gala was in full swing, and the air was thick with an intoxicating blend of laughter, chatter, and the soft strains of classical music. Khushi found herself moving through the crowd, her senses heightened, acutely aware of the significance of the night. She had managed to hold her ground with Navin, but the true challenge lay ahead.

After her brief but intense conversation with him, Khushi felt the weight of his scrutiny linger. She caught sight of Arnav across the room, and her heart lifted. He was talking animatedly to Anjali and Akash, gesturing with fervor. There was something undeniably magnetic about the way he commanded attention, even amidst the throng of well-dressed guests.

“Khushi!” Anjali’s voice pulled her back to the present. “Come over here! You have to see this!”

Khushi made her way to where Anjali was standing, her heart racing with anticipation. Arnav turned to her, and she could see a spark of excitement in his eyes. “You did great with Mr. Malhotra,” he said, a note of admiration in his voice. “I didn’t think you’d dive in like that.”

Khushi shrugged, feigning nonchalance. “I had to make my presence known. Besides, he seemed intrigued.”

“Intrigued is one way to put it,” Akash chimed in, grinning. “You’ve got a talent for mingling, Khushi.”

“Maybe you should have been a diplomat,” Arnav teased, his smile warm. “But let’s not forget why we’re here. We need to dig deeper.”

“Right,” Khushi said, feeling her pulse quicken. “What’s our next move?”

Anjali gestured toward the expansive hall, where couples twirled gracefully on the dance floor. “We need to blend in. A dance might just give us the perfect opportunity to overhear more conversations. Plus, it’ll allow us to keep our eyes on the Malhotras.”

“Good idea,” Arnav replied, a spark of enthusiasm lighting up his features. “Khushi, shall we?”

Khushi felt a flutter of nerves mixed with excitement. “I’d love to,” she said, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach.

As they made their way to the dance floor, Arnav’s hand found hers, warm and reassuring. The moment they stepped into the swirling crowd of dancers, Khushi’s worries faded. She was enveloped in the music, the rhythm pulling her closer to Arnav as they moved in sync.

He led her effortlessly, his presence commanding yet surprisingly gentle. Khushi found herself lost in the moment, their earlier discussions fading away as she focused on the way he guided her through the steps. The chemistry between them felt electric, an unspoken connection that seemed to deepen with every twirl.

“You’re a natural,” Arnav said, his voice low as they spun. “I didn’t know you could dance like this.”

“I can surprise you,” Khushi replied with a playful smile, her confidence blooming. “Just wait until I show you my bhangra moves!”

Arnav chuckled, the sound rumbling deep in his chest. “I’d pay to see that. But for now, let’s focus on the mission.”

As the dance continued, Khushi’s eyes darted around the room, keenly observing the guests. She spotted the Navin deep in conversation with another couple, their body language tense. “Look over there,” she whispered to Arnav, nodding discreetly in their direction.

Arnav followed her gaze. “We need to get closer,” he said, a determined glint in his eye.

The music swelled, and they wove their way through the throng of guests, maintaining the pretense of a couple lost in the moment. Khushi could hear snippets of conversation as they approached the Malhotra group, her heart pounding with anticipation.

“... this rivalry will only end in disaster if we don’t handle it carefully,” she caught the tail end of a man’s voice, his tone grave.

Arnav’s grip on her waist tightened, his expression serious. “We have to know more.”

Just then, a woman caught sight of them, her eyes narrowing as she approached. “Arnav! I didn’t know you were attending. And who’s this lovely lady?”

Khushi felt the weight of the woman’s scrutiny as she assessed her. “I’m Khushi,” she said, forcing a smile. “Arnav’s fiancee.”

“Ah, how lovely,” the woman said, her tone dripping with false sweetness. “I’m Mrs. Malhotra. You must be excited to join our family.”

Khushi met her gaze steadily. “I am indeed,” she replied, trying to match her enthusiasm.

Mrs. Malhotra’s smile faltered slightly, but she quickly regained her composure. “You know, Arnav, I’ve always believed that family is the most important thing. Our past defines us, and so does our future. It’s vital we protect our legacies.”

Arnav’s jaw tightened. “Of course, Mrs. Malhotra. I agree wholeheartedly.”

Khushi sensed the underlying tension in the air and quickly chimed in. “Yes, legacies are important. They guide us in our decisions.”

“Wise words,” Mrs. Malhotra said, her smile returning, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “But be careful, dear. There are things about the Raizadas and the Malhotras that are best left untouched.” That sounded like a warning.

The warning hung heavily in the air. Khushi felt a chill run down her spine. “Thank you for the advice,” she said, her voice steady.

“Such an optimistic outlook,” Mrs. Malhotra replied, her gaze icy. “But remember, not all secrets are meant to be revealed.”

With that, she turned back to the group, leaving Khushi and Arnav standing together, tension radiating between them.

“What just happened?” Khushi asked, her heart racing.

Arnav’s expression was grim. “I think we just touched a nerve. Mrs. Malhotra knows more than she’s letting on.”

“Then we have to dig deeper,” Khushi said, determination igniting within her. “We can’t let fear dictate our actions.”

As they stepped away from the crowd, Khushi felt the adrenaline pumping through her veins. “Let’s find a way to speak with some of the older family members. They might be more willing to share the truth.”

Arnav nodded. “Agreed. Let’s look for someone who can give us insights without the Malhotras’ watchful eyes.”

They made their way through the crowd, their mission at the forefront of their minds. As they searched for potential allies, Khushi couldn’t shake the feeling that they were treading on dangerous ground. But the thrill of uncovering hidden truths fueled her determination. She had never felt so alive, so driven by a purpose greater than herself.

The night continued, filled with laughter, music, and dancing, but Khushi and Arnav remained focused. With each passing moment, their connection deepened, a silent understanding growing between them as they faced the unknown together.

As the evening wore on, Khushi caught a glimpse of an elderly woman seated alone at a table, her expression thoughtful as she sipped her drink. “Look over there,” Khushi said, nudging Arnav. “That woman looks like she might have some stories to tell.”

“Let’s approach her,” Arnav replied, his gaze unwavering.

As they walked toward the woman, Khushi felt a sense of anticipation. They were about to delve deeper into the labyrinth of their families’ pasts, and she was ready to face whatever came next.

“Excuse me,” Arnav said, his voice smooth and inviting as they reached the table. “Mind if we join you?”

The woman looked up, her eyes sharp and discerning. “Of course, dear. I’ve been waiting for some company.”

Khushi and Arnav exchanged glances, their resolve solidified. They were ready to uncover the truth, no matter where it led them.

Very interesting update dear 🙂

Just loved it 🤗

So all are set to go for a mission & Khushi seems to be more excited than anyone but she was equally powerful & calculative while executing anything which is really good 😊

So all 4 have discussed about Malhotras & they want to uncover the truth so they arranged an invite to their party so that they can check themselves about the people

Khushi & ASR were really good 👍 & now in the party they meet Mrs Malhotra & Mr Malhotra too but the vibes I felt were warning & it is obvious too looking at the situation 😔

Direct warning & questions from Mrs Malhotra seems fishy to me & of course it's much more than meets the eyes now ... Even the new lady seems interesting in the end

Waiting for more

Thanks for the PM ☺️

Chapter 5 - Secrets Unveiled

The elderly woman’s eyes, a rich shade of grey, observed Khushi and Arnav with a shrewdness that belied her age. There was a quiet, almost haunting wisdom in the way she sized them up before giving a small, measured smile.

“Please, sit,” she said, gesturing to the empty chairs beside her. “I haven’t had much company tonight.” Her voice was soft, with an accent that spoke of years spent in the company of high society, and yet there was a hint of something more - something deeper.

Khushi and Arnav exchanged a glance, silently agreeing to approach with caution. They lowered themselves into the chairs, their curiosity piqued by the woman’s composed yet knowing demeanor.

“I’m Khushi,” she began, breaking the silence with a polite smile. “This is Arnav. We’re new to the area, and I couldn’t help but notice you sitting here alone.”

The woman chuckled lightly, her fingers delicately tapping the rim of her glass. “A lot of people here tonight prefer to mingle in groups, but I’ve never been fond of large crowds. Too many faces and not enough substance.” Her eyes flickered with a knowing glance. “I prefer the company of those who understand that some things in life are best left unsaid.”

The words hung in the air, thick with meaning. Khushi leaned in, her instincts telling her that this woman held more knowledge than she appeared to. Arnav remained poised, his usual guarded expression softening only slightly in the presence of the older woman’s calm demeanor.

“We’re actually looking into a bit of family history,” Arnav said, his voice steady yet laced with a subtle hint of intrigue. “There’s a rivalry between the Raizadas and the Malhotras that dates back generations. We believe there’s something more to it than just business competition.”

The woman’s eyes flickered, her gaze sharp as she studied Arnav, then Khushi. The years seemed to fall away from her face for a moment, and in that brief instant, she looked more like a woman who had witnessed the unraveling of many stories, seen the faces behind the masks, and understood the cost of secrets.

“The Malhotras...” she began slowly, her voice lowering to a whisper. “That name is synonymous with ambition, but also with something darker. There are things in this family that even time can’t erase. I’m surprised the two of you are willing to go digging into such murky waters. It’s dangerous work, you know."

Khushi’s heart raced at the cryptic words. “We don’t want to back down,” she said, her voice firm. “If there’s something we need to know, it’s better to know now than later.”

The woman regarded Khushi for a long moment, her gaze flickering to the swirling crowd, as if she were weighing the decision to speak. Finally, she sighed, a wistful expression crossing her features.

“Very well,” she said, lowering her voice further. “You want the truth? The Malhotras have a history, yes. But it’s not just business. There was a betrayal - an affair, a broken trust - many years ago. Your family, the Raizadas, were at the heart of it.”

Khushi’s breath caught. Her mind raced. An affair? Her gaze turned to Arnav, who looked equally intrigued but careful.

“An affair?” Arnav repeated, his voice barely a whisper. “Between whom?”

The woman’s lips curled into a faint smile, but there was no warmth in it. “I can’t say. But I do know this: the Raizadas and the Malhotras have been locked in a silent war ever since. The rivalry didn’t begin with business deals or property; it began with something far more personal.”

Khushi’s mind swirled with questions. She leaned forward, her curiosity now consuming her. “What happened? What was it?”

The woman placed her glass down with a soft clink, her fingers resting on the rim as she studied the two of them. “I wish I could tell you everything, child. But some things are locked away, sealed by pride and years of denial. However…” She paused, her gaze shifting between Arnav and Khushi. “…I’ll tell you this: your families may think they are at odds over business, but the real reason for their animosity is far more intimate than that.”

A silence fell between them, heavy with unspoken words. Khushi and Arnav exchanged a look. This was the first real lead they had. The question now was: how much were they willing to risk to uncover the truth?

“Where can we find more information?” Khushi asked, her voice firm but laced with urgency. “Is there anyone else who knows about this?”

The elderly woman glanced over her shoulder as if making sure no one was eavesdropping. “You must speak to Rajeev Malhotra. He’s the eldest son, and despite his cold exterior, he’s the one who remembers the past most clearly. But beware, my dear,” she added, her voice suddenly grave. “Rajeev is not someone who welcomes questions. And there are eyes on you already. If you choose to dig deeper, be prepared for the consequences. The Malhotras won’t forgive easily.”

Khushi’s heart pounded. Rajeev Malhotra. That name rang a bell - he was known in high society for his ruthless yet magnetic presence. And if he was the key to unlocking the mystery of their families' past, then they had to find him.

“We’ll be careful,” Arnav said, his voice calm but determined. “Thank you for your help. But how do we find him?”

The woman smiled faintly, a knowing gleam in her eyes. “Rajeev frequents the club on the outskirts of the city. It's an old haunt where business deals and personal matters alike are sealed. Go there tomorrow evening. You may find him, or you may not. But if you do, tread carefully. The Malhotras are always watching.”

With that, she stood up, leaving a few bills on the table for the drinks. “Good luck,” she said softly, then turned to leave, her figure fading into the crowd.

As she disappeared into the crowd, Khushi and Arnav exchanged a look that was a mixture of excitement, curiosity, and a touch of apprehension.

“The club,” Khushi said quietly. “It’s risky. But we have to go.”

Arnav’s hand found hers, his grip firm. “We’re in this together, Khushi. Whatever happens, we’ll face it.”

With that, they left the table, the weight of the woman’s words hanging over them like a dark cloud. They had a new lead, but they also had a dangerous path ahead. The more they uncovered, the more they realized that the truth about their families was far more tangled than they had ever imagined.

The night after their conversation with the elderly woman, Arnav and Khushi couldn’t shake the weight of what they’d learned. They had spent hours discussing their next move, both of them equally determined to uncover the truth, but also mindful of the danger that lurked in every corner of their investigation.

As promised, they headed to the club on the outskirts of the city the following evening. The building was an old, luxurious mansion turned into a private members’ club, with the kind of ambiance that screamed wealth and secrecy. Arnav led the way, his demeanor as poised as ever, though Khushi could tell that he was as tense as she was. There was an unspoken understanding between them that they had reached the point of no return.

“This place looks like something out of a noir film,” Khushi remarked, trying to ease the tension in the air with her usual banter. But her voice was laced with nervousness. The atmosphere felt heavy, almost suffocating.

“Stay sharp,” Arnav murmured, his eyes scanning the crowd. “We don’t know who we’re dealing with here.”

Inside, the club was dimly lit, with plush velvet seating and chandeliers casting a soft, romantic glow over the room. The air was thick with the buzz of quiet conversations, clinking glasses, and the occasional low laughter. Khushi felt out of place in her elegant yet simple outfit - her red printed kurta with matching pants, though beautiful, felt like it screamed “outsider” amidst the high society crowd.

As they moved deeper into the club, Arnav’s hand subtly brushed against hers, a silent reminder that they were in this together, no matter how risky it got. Khushi’s pulse quickened at the touch, though she quickly pushed the fluttering feeling aside. There was no time for distractions.

“I’m going to talk to the bartender,” Arnav said, his eyes still scanning the room. “You stay here, try to blend in, and keep an eye out.”

Khushi nodded, though her unease didn’t dissipate. She stood by the entrance, feeling the sharp gaze of several people as they glanced her way. She was beginning to think that the only thing more obvious than her discomfort was Arnav’s commanding presence. He always had a way of moving through a room that made people take notice.

As Khushi scanned the crowd, she caught sight of a tall, well-built man sitting in the far corner of the room. His face was sharp, his eyes dark and calculating. She knew immediately who it was - Rajeev Malhotra. His reputation preceded him, and she could sense the weight of his presence even from this distance.

Her heart raced. This was it. The man they had to speak to in order to untangle the truth.

“Are you lost, Khushi?” Arnav’s voice brought her back to reality, his tone teasing, though there was a hint of concern in it. “What are you staring at?”

Khushi snapped her gaze back to Arnav, her cheeks flushing slightly. “I... I think I just spotted Rajeev Malhotra.”

Arnav’s eyes followed her gaze, and a moment of silent understanding passed between them. “You stay here,” he ordered. “I’ll go talk to him. Stay alert.”

Before Khushi could protest, Arnav was already moving toward the corner of the room where Rajeev sat. Khushi watched as Arnav approached the man, his movements purposeful and confident. There was no mistaking the tension in the air - the way Rajeev’s eyes narrowed as he recognized Arnav Singh Raizada.

She could barely hear their conversation, but she knew it was happening. The stakes were high now. She had to trust Arnav to handle this. She couldn’t help but wonder, though - was she prepared for what came next?

A few minutes later...

Arnav returned, his face unusually pale, his jaw tense. Khushi couldn’t help but ask, “What did he say?”

Arnav looked over at her, his expression grim. “It’s worse than I thought, Khushi. The Malhotras were directly involved in the betrayal... but not just with my grandparents. It was between them and someone else in our family - someone we never expected.”

Khushi felt a chill run down her spine. “Who?”

Arnav’s lips tightened, but he didn’t answer immediately. He looked around to make sure no one was paying attention to them. Then, in a low voice, he added, “It was my mother, Khushi. My mother was involved with Rajeev’s father. That’s the secret they’ve been hiding all these years.”

The weight of the revelation hit her like a tidal wave. “Your mother?” Khushi whispered, her mind racing to comprehend what he had just said. “But... I thought she was…”

“I know. I know what you thought,” Arnav interrupted, his voice harsh. “But it’s true. And it’s the reason our families have been at odds for so long. The betrayal, the rivalry - it all started with her. And it’s been buried so deep that even I didn’t know the full extent until now.”

Khushi reached for his arm, her heart aching at the pain in his eyes. “Arnav… I’m so sorry.”

He shook his head, the ghost of a bitter smile on his lips. “There’s nothing to be sorry for, Khushi. You didn’t know.” He paused, his eyes hardening. “But we need to put an end to this. This feud - it’s been dragging on for too long, and it’s about time we finish what my grandparents started.”

Two days later…

The Malhotra mystery was finally solved, the truth out in the open, but now, Arnav and Khushi had something even more daunting to face: their wedding.

Despite everything that had happened, the atmosphere at the Raizada house was strangely quiet. The engagement had been formalized, but now the time had come to plan the wedding. Arnav and Khushi were still in the thick of their “hate-to-love” phase, and the constant bickering between them had become a familiar routine.

As they sat down to finalize the wedding arrangements, Khushi glared at Arnav, who was leaning back in his chair, his arms folded across his chest in that infuriating way that made her blood boil.

“What is it now?” Arnav asked, his voice laced with irritation as she stared at the wedding guest list for the hundredth time.

“Why do we have to invite her?” Khushi snapped, pointing to a name on the list. “She barely knows us! And every time I’m around her, she acts like I’m invisible.”

Arnav raised an eyebrow. “It’s a family wedding, Khushi. We don’t get to pick and choose who attends.”

“Well, I’m not the one who wants this wedding in the first place!” Khushi shot back, her eyes flashing.

Arnav smirked, leaning in closer. “You don’t like that, do you? The idea that I’m stuck with you just as much as you’re stuck with me?”

Khushi’s breath caught, but she refused to back down. “It’s not like I enjoy it either, Raizada.”

The tension between them crackled, but beneath the surface, there was something unspoken - something growing. It was hard to ignore the way their eyes lingered just a moment longer than necessary, the way their voices softened ever so slightly when they argued.
