Chapter 27 Part 1

The next day

Khushi was still in Anjali's apartment. She was getting ready in her room when her phone rang.

"Hey Nihaal, whats up?

"Khushi, I need to talk to you in person. It is about Lavanya.

"Is everything ok?

"Yes. No. I don't know.

"Ok. Let's meet this weekend in the mall.

"No. I need to talk to you sooner.

"Ok. Tomorrow evening in the coffee shop near AR.

"Tomorrow is good but not there. I will text you the place.

"Sure. Bye.

"What happened to him? Hope there is nothing serious. Khushi looked worried.

Arnav had never asked anyone a favor for his family nor for himself. Recent events seem to have disrupted his normal routine. But today he had to do this. For the past couple of hours, he had contemplated every situation that might counter his initiative or favor. He knew that he could handle Nihaal if he found out what his brother did. He knew he could handle Khushi but had lots of reservations as usual especially when this involved his brother. He had to completely get her under confidence and had no choice but to trust her. He had thought of every other person apart from Khushi who could help him in this situation but again had to circle back to her.

Shyam had never ever asked for help to anyone for anything. But today things were different. He had been rehearsing since that morning how to break the ice and talk to Khushi. He knew that she was a very loyal friend.

But it had to be done. There were only two executable options left. Either he directly proposed to Anjali to be her boyfriend, that may bomb out instantly or become her friend and then her boyfriend, that may work. He would need Khushi's help for both.

The next question was what kind of help did he need from Khushi. Well, he needed to know Anjali better and someone who could bridge both of them. For that Khushi had to be convinced. Himalayan task? What other problems would arise in the due process? He had no idea.

AR

Anjali had been briefed up by Aman and the Americas team about the software piracy issue. They were giving an ethics and security all day training for the whole Americas team which Anjali and her team were attending. The same training was extended to all other teams in every company under AR group in the coming weeks.

Khushi was working on a report for Aman, when she received a meeting invite from Shyam. She was surprised. She never has any meeting from a different team. If it was she would have been notified by Aman. The meeting was in 10 minutes. She gathered her laptop and notepad to a conference room.

Shyam entered and looked a bit seriously at Khushi. She was a bit baffled and thought maybe she was pushed to the Americas team or she had to do some extended work to Americas. What was it?. She didn't want to move to Americas if that was the matter. She was learning so much from Arnav.

"Sir, what is this meeting about?

Shyam raised a brow.

"Well, I don't have any work in the Americas region then why am I meeting you? And that too for an hour.

Shyam was a bit uncomfortable but he had to get her help.

"Khushi, I need your complete trust and loyalty. What we are discussing here should not go out of this room? Not to anyone. My brothers, your friends or family, your higherups not a soul.

Khushi was very scared.

"Sir, did I do anything wrong?

"No I need a favor from you.

"Favor?

"I don't know how to put this but I am going to be blunt. I like Anjali a lot

Her eyes widened, jaw dropped and before she could say a word he shushed her and she kept quiet but with wide eyes.

"First listen fully before you say anything. As I said I like her a lot. I know my image in general is like a playboy or something but that is not fully true. When I first met Anjali, I was just blown away by her simplicity. She was completely different from the girls I usually meet. She has been...

Shyam stopped and looked amusingly at Khushi who had raised her hand.

"Yes?

"I have a question.

"You raised your hand like in classroom?

"You asked me to fully listen. But I have a question I want to ask before you continue

Shyam chuckled and said "Ask.

"You said your image as a playboy is not fully true. Which part is not fully true?

"I have heard ridiculous stories about my affairs. Most of them are so mindboggling. Look, I am no saint. I do flirt with women outside of work. I have had my share of affairs and flings. But I have never misbehaved with a woman ever like some of the stories that have been going around. Never taken advantage of a woman's attraction towards me. I have many times discouraged women who are nave. That is the difference. Most playboys never have morals and take advantage of any woman. My mom and dadi have inculcated some Indian values of respecting women. I have never crossed that. I have never pursued women who retaliate the very first time.

Khushi raised a brow.

"Well Anjali has been the only exception. I know it is unethical in an employer-employee relationship. But I am human. I don't want to just say she is an attraction. That seems so cheap for her. She is a woman who I respect. As of now, she is not even considering me as a neighbor let alone a friend. Honest to you, I want to be her boyfriend. Not a fling or a passing affair.

Khushi stood up with a shot of shock.

"Sit down. I know she won't agree me as a boyfriend as I am her boss. But as of now I just want to be a good friend. I need your help to talk to her at least be her friend for now.

"Woah hold on... Are you saying you want to be her friend with the thought of being her future boyfriend and you need my help for it?

"Yes.

"Before I speak further, I have to tell you. I am going to talk to you not as an employee of AR but as Anjali's friend. Whatever I say won't be held against me in any place or situation ever.

Shyam nodded in amusement.

"You want to be her friend with a motive? That is a horrible thought. What if in future you find a quality in her that turns you off. You don't want to be her boyfriend anymore. Will you distance away from your friendship?

"What? Why would you say that?

"I know Anjali well and what she expects in a man. I can tell you right now with brutal honesty, you don't fit the bill in any angle.

"What? I am not assessing her, Khushi. I just want to be her friend. I will surely propose to her later on if she really likes me. But I want her to ...

"Sorry. I cannot help you in this being a friend then becoming a boyfriend thing. But...

Khushi started to think Anjali's reaction when she was talking about Shyam staying next door. She did see some kind of spark. Did she miss something?

"But what?

"I can find out what she thinks of you. If she thinks you can be a friend, then I will help HER be your friend. But under no circumstance will I help you.

Shyam was shocked.

"What????????

"Why not? She is like a sister to me. Imagine I am your sister. If someone asks this same favor to you for me, will you do it?

Shyam kept quiet and looked away indicating his displeasure to the thought. To think now, his idea was stupid.

"Look, may be my proposal is wrong if you put it that way. But I hope you won't tell this conversation of ours to anyone including Anjali.

After a minute Khushi said

"Alright. Since you have asked me for help, I will help you. But not the way you want me to. Let me give you a small challenge. You have had loads of friends and girlfriends. For a change, try being a genuine friend to a girl. You should not stop her if she likes someone else. Forget this boyfriend angle. Without my effort, try to earn her friendship. There is no shortcut to making any relationship. I will decide when my interference is necessary. If you accept this challenge, I won't tell Anjali for now about this idiotic idea of yours for now. You do know eventually I need to tell her this. I can't betray my friend for you. Consider this as a pause for now.

Shyam was almost furious but had to swallow it as she was right. He thought for a few minutes. She was right. He had no girls who were close friends or even just friends.

"Fine. I will take up the challenge. With clenched teeth.

Khushi smiled and was about to leave.

"Anyone else speaking like that to me would regret for the rest of the life.

"Likewise. You are totally lucky I decided otherwise plus that you are ASR's brother. My boss's boss's boss's brother

Shyam raised his brows and smiled as she left.

"She is really something. Has Arnav noticed how weird she is?

That afternoon, Aman and Khushi were winding their regular daily meeting with Arnav in a conference room. Just before the meeting got over, Khushi's laptop showed a new meeting invite with Arnav in his cabin.

What had she done now? As she walked towards his cabin, she started thinking hard.

She sat in front of his desk and asked him the reason for the meeting. He was working on his laptop and didn't reply to her and continued working. She checked that the meeting was for an hour. She just sat there looking at her laptop. After a while, he turned and looked at her.

"I need to have your complete trust and loyalty. Whatever we discuss here should not go out at all? Not a soul including your family should know.

Khushi's eyes widened "A repeat telecast? Oh no. does he have a secret girlfriend that I need to help? Please nooo. she muttered almost in a whisper.

"What was that?

"Nothing Arn... ASR. I will be not say anything to anyone. You can trust me. I know you think I am a chatter box...

Arnav raised a brow "think?

"Ok ok. Fineee. I am one but I can be a confidante.

Arnav looked at her shockingly. "Confidante?

"Yes. You know people who you can...

"I know what it means. Any way let me come to the point. I need you to help my brother.

With a sigh of relief, she asked "Akash sir?

"No.

"Oh, Shyam sir?

"No. Nihaal.

"Nihaal? What... why...?

"Nihaal seems to like some girl but something is wrong between them. He is not saying anything to me. He never hides anything from me, ever. He is my little brother and he is sad. He is never sad. I can't just sit around not doing anything...

"Here it goes, repeat telecast again. (in a low tone then normal tone) Before I speak further, I am going to talk to you not as an employee of AR but as your acquaintance or whatever I am to you other than an employee. Whatever I say won't be held against me in any place or situation ever.
