Part 5
They drove in comfortable silence for a while. But Khushi being Khushi
couldn't keep quiet for long. So soon they started discussing their likes
and dislikes.
She was so engrossed in the conversation that she didn't realize that Arnav had stopped the car some five minutes ago and was currently
listening to her with an amused smirk intact on his face.
"Umm.. Khushi I hate interrupting your lets-see-who-can-talk-the-
longest-without-breathing marathon but we're here. Let's continue
this later, shall we?", he said with a devilish smile.
"I'm sorry I didn't realize. But this is how much I talk normally. You
better get used to it.", with finger pointing at him at the last sentence
she said.
"Absolutely no problem. I like it already I think.", he flirted right back.
Coming over to her side, he helped her step out of the car. One look at the
building and Khushi was blown away by its beauty. But what attracted her
the most was the name plate in gold, proudly stating the name of the
building - "Anmol Ratna (Precious jewels)".
Seeing her confusion, Arnav answered, " This is actually an orphanage
named after my mother, Ratna Singh Raizada. Come I'll take you
inside."
As soon as they entered, a group of children came rushing to greet them.
Amidst cries of "Bhaiya","You're late" and "We won't talk to you",
Arnav somehow managed to calm down the children.
"I am sorry I'm late. But do you know why I was late?"
"Why?", came the chorus.
"I was actually getting this important person for you.", he said pointing
at Khushi.
Khushi waved enthusiastically at the flashing them her beaming smile. At
once they returned her smile.
"Who is she?", Rahul, a four-year old, asked.
"I'm his wife. Aap log hume Di bula sakte hain. (You guys can call me
Di)."
And once again amidst cries of "Di" and "Bhaiya", both Arnav and Khushi
were showered with hugs and kisses.
Soon a maid arrived with several gifts which Arnav had brought for the
children. While Arnav got surrounded by kids, Khushi excused herself to
drink some water. Requesting a maid to get her a glass of cold water, she
stood under the shade of the mango tree, admiring her husband with the
kids.
"You seem someone special.", came a warm voice from behind.
Khushi turned around quickly only to come across a woman in her early
40s. She was dressed in a cream color saree with her hair tied in a bun.
"Namaste.",Khushi greeted her with folded hands.
"As I said earlier, you seem someone special. He's never come here
with anyone before.", she nodded with a smile.
"I'm his wife, Khushi Arnav Singh Raizada. So I'm guessing I'm
special enough?", Khushi asked with a wink.
"Oh my. Arnav got married. Congratulations dear! I'm so happy for
both of you."
"Thank you. But may I ask who are you?"
"I'm the care-taker of this home, Sister Lily."
"Oh its a pleasure to meet you. I must say you have nurtured a very
warm and homely environment here."
"All the credit goes to your husband here. He's the one who makes it
a point to visit twice every week. This orphanage receives a lot of
donations. But people don't understand that its love and care that
these children crave. Arnav does understand."
"I never knew he owned an orphanage. Never came out in public.",
Khushi said bewildered.
"Oh trust me you could not have known. Arnav has a heart of gold.
He owns eighteen orphanages across the country and seven NGOs
for women. But you would never know because he owns them under
the name of his mother.", Sister finished with a fond smile leaving Khushi
shocked.
Who would ever have thought that her husband, the Khadoos Singh
Raizada as portrayed by the media, was actually a philanthropist at heart.
And all this without even taking any credit.
"Good Morning Sister. I see that you've met my wife. How are things
going here?", Arnav asked greeting Sister.
"Great. What could possibly go wrong in a week? Wasn't that the last
time you asked the same question?", Sister asked chuckling at his
concern.
"Can't help it. These children are very close to my heart. If you would
please excuse us, I'll show my wife around."
"Sure."
Taking her hand in his, Arnav led Khushi to a bench nearby. Once they
were seated,he gave her a beautiful box.
"Another present?", Khushi squeaked excited.
"Yeah. An important one though.", he said enjoying her childish
excitement to the core.
Opening the box, Khushi gasped. Inside lay a pair of beautiful Kangans.
"Wow ! They are so pretty."
"Meri Maa ke hain.( They belong to my mother's.) You cooked for the
first time yesterday in our home. So this is a gift for that.", he said
smiling.
"Thank you so much.", she said grinning.
"Don't thank me ever for these things that I do for you. Besides my
mother wanted to give these to her daughter-in-law. So they belong
to you now. May I?", he asked taking one of them in his hands.
When he had very carefully slipped those kangans in her hands, taking
care not to hurt her, he kissed those kangans in her hands. Then with a
somber expression he continued, "Khushi. Yesterday you told me about
your parents. I think you must know this about my family."
Seeing him hesitate, Khushi pressed his hands that were holding her's with
her other hand, as if expressing her silent support.
"My mother was a single mother."
NOTE :
Arnav in this story is not an arrogant jerk, to his family at least.
