I stared at them even in the wedding bell thread and I felt a touch of the divine in it. It really does not matter what we interpret. The beauty lies in the fact that the content is presented with such complexity that we are compelled to think in all directions.

Amidst these heart wrenching scenes when he is ruthlessly blackmailing her by the pool side and dragging her up the steps to temple, I failed to deny their bond. His authority, her compliance, a palpitating, heaving intimacy in the backdrop of the darkness of the night, so hard to ignore. Their oneness so tangible. His sense of betrayal, just made me feel as if his trusted beloved wife has strayed away and he is all set to fix it right and have her back. He just can't afford to loose all that precious emotional investment.

He has crushed her dreams and stigmatized her by this forced wedding, but I don't feel he is trying to condemn God or her beliefs. While he is mocking at her faith and denying her status as a wife, this could be his cry for acceptance. He may not believe in mangal sutra and sindoor, but as you said he has used it to remind her and the world of his ownership. I saw the dupatta as a barrier between them, K hiding the truth for her innocent reasons and he taking the hurtful steps to resolve them.

I couldn't help but compare and contrast these epis to the very first ones. Both times he maligned her. He took her pearls with him and compelled her to leave her home town. This time he stamps her with his sindoor and mangal sutra and brings her home. They both were responsible for Payal's broken wedding and they save it together today. He struggled with his desires that time and today with his need that has become a part of him. They are bound, be it by pain.
