"Chemistry is more than just a mere attraction; chemistry is the way things click or a bond between two people. When two people have 'chemistry' they effortlessly feel a natural bond with each other, even if they've just met"
I have always been intrigued by the chemistry which couples share. How to define it? How to understand it? It is not a tangible thing which could be touched but still it can be seen. It can be felt. I have watched much Indian soaps before, of every kind. Whether romantic or family or comedy. But never I saw a couple which just set the screen on fire . There was nothing in them which could hold my attention beyond a certain point. But this changed. This changed when I saw Arnav and Khushi in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon played by Barun Sobti and Sanaya Irani.
To me the credit of IPK's success was always based on arshi's chemistry which was in fact sarun's chemistry. As the drama progressed I forgot the difference between sarun and arshi. For me Khushi was Sanaya and Arnav was barun. I cried with them, I laughed with them. All through their journey I was with them as a silent spectator observing them.
You like a couple based on how much do you think they look good together. After that it is their comfort level with each other and their mutual understanding. And also Love. Love is most important. You would feel a couple has great bonding and chemistry when you see their romantic moments. A hug, a kiss, a little closeness, some romance. But what about the scenes in which there is no such thing. No hug, no kiss, no touching. Like these pictures.
One is a sad scene. There is no romance. but just by seeing the picture I get goose bumps and I mean that literally. Is this kind of chemistry normal? how can it be that during a sad scene we can literally feel the love between the two? If this is not great chemistry then what is it? The other was an intense scene. Full of passion and hatred. Was there love anywhere? No. both were hurting. Both were in denial. but still the chemistry is exploding. You can just feel it by looking at the picture.
Another remarkable point when it comes to chemistry is that you often see two people with a lot of chemistry who are nevertheless very different perhaps from different backgrounds, perhaps with very different styles, or ideologies. Like Arnav and Khushi. Here they might well be obvious in all of the little ways, but nevertheless have some kind of deeper understanding and similarity where it really matters. I am talking about that bond, that connection which both of them shared immediately after meeting. In fact their hearts were bonded even before they met each other.
This is my favourite example. It was an almost consummation scene right? What happened in it? Arnav caressed khushi's face. He hugged her, lifted her and laid her down on the bed. Now tell me what was so extraordinary in this? These type of scenes must have happened hundreds of times before with many couples and actors. Possibly more romantic. But I never got a tingling feeling in my stomach watching those. It is this scene that when I watch it I want it to never end. I feel mesmerized. Is it because how Arnav was staring at Khushi with so much reverence like she is some priceless treasure? Or is it Khushi who is scared and nervous but at the same time not able to stop herself from hugging her husband? Why do I feel enthralled by this scene? Why does it captivate me? The answer is chemistry. This chemistry which is so explosive, so real, so volatile, so utterly amazing and astounding that I am left open mouthed.
The best phase of Arnav and Khushi where their chemistry is out of the world is the Farak parta hai track. Both were in denial continuously reminding themselves that they don't care. Lavanya was right for Arnav. She was what he thought he always wanted. But was she really? No. khushi's family pressurized her to get engaged to shyam and because of that pressure and society she agreed. At that time she did not he was a liar but still she didn't feel comfortable. The point which always astounded me was that shyam never manhandled Khushi. In fact he never ever touched her without her permission( im talking about the point before Khushi finds out about him). On the other hand Arnav manhandled Khushi, terrorized her and made her life hell. Still she was drawn to him and him only. During this whole farak parta hai track we can see the chemistry exploding between both. Whether in romance or in denial or in anger.
So now when the show is over and sometimes I watch other couples I try to find out what is missing. What is that one thing which could make me watch it again and again. I try to find chemistry but unfortunately I can never find it.
A last point to ponder. Was this chemistry possible if Arnav and Khushi would not have been played by Barun and Sanaya? Would this spark have been there? If not then whose chemistry was it which set fire on screen? Arshi or Sarun?
