Lot of posts have been made on this topic. I felt like putting forward my POV too. I for one believe it's neither the actor nor the character , it's actually both ... and my explanation for that ...

Lets talk ASR , a lot of us say that it was the character no the actor that made Barun popular . Right to a certain extent . But I don't believe any XYZ actor could have done it the same way even after all the training and grooming. Reason : The character no doubt was etched out perfectly but there was a lot of input from the actor as well. One of my fav scenes " the Holi scene "... I've seen a lot of times in shows and movies, a heroine cupping the hero's face and the hero getting sentimental but why I had never heard my own heart pounding or felt the same way then like how it happened when I watched Khushi cupping Arnav's face and Arnav wiping off his tears . It was definitely the way they looked at each other , the emotions they had in their eyes..cannot be brought out by everyone... very few actors have that talent and Barun and Sanaya are one of them. I agree anyone could have done ASR and Khushi but i don't think they would have got the same popularity or even the show would've got the same fame.
They would've to be at least as talented as them or better and not to forget we can't see the same chemistry with anyone as well. It has to click. I ilke Sanaya since MJHT , but I didn't like her that much with mohit onscreen. She definitely has an amazing chemistry with Barun onscreen.
Now the character makes the actor , also true because I haven't seen any of Barun's previous shows but yes I know they weren't that successful , and also I didn't like Sanaya as gunjan as much as I started liking her after Khushi. After Khushi's role I'm a fan of her acting ...
SRK has some flop films in his list too , that doesn't mean he was or is a bad actor . Yes the story , the role , the character was not good enough but at the same time I don't think Darr would've been the same even if it was done by any XYZ actor. The story , the character was etched out perfect but the actor had his own input in there too.
I read some posts about LM interview too , lot of people didn't like what he said about Sanaya and Khushi. I agree totally that sanaya is a very dedicated actress, no one can top that in my charts...

But for me Khushi didn't have to get out of a helicopter for me to like her , he talked about a portion of viewers that get attracted to the characters that way , but there is another portion who don't care for all that ... For me Khushi was the reason I started watching the show and also got glued to it. My mouth didn't hang open when I saw ASR in shades stepping out of that helicopter but yes I had a big smile on my face every time khushi challenged ASR and stood up for herself though she was shown as a no one in front of the big business tycoon. I loved how she reciprocated him. And Sanaya did that brilliantly. Of course after february it was all a downfall, Khushi's character assassination, Arnav's too. Even if we don't consider Barun's leave for movie , they had whole of March and April , they could've done a lot then rather than showing the mindless comedy ...Even if the show was about Arnav ( and I guess thats why Khushi's pain was never focused ) but still for me Khushi was and will always be the central point of the show. She made him say sorry for the first time , she made him say Happy birthday for the first time, she made him dance , she made him love someone , she made him forget his past ...and not to forget it was the character Khushi that made me like ASR in the beginning too. It was khushi all the way for me ... There would've been no ASR without khushi even if he got out of the helicopter or he was a millionaire or whatever ...

Again to my point of character , ASR didn't appeal me at first ... I started liking ASR after quite a few episodes , when I started seeing that change in Barun's expressions, dialogue delivery and some minor other things ... So i definitely would give Barun the credit for that, he did bring the character to life , at least for me..

Very well said. Agree with what you say.

In her recent interview even Sanaya acknowledged this:

Q: In your opinion, what made the show- Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon- such a raging success?
A: I am not going to take away from the entire creative team, the producers who started off with the story, which was very interesting. It's Gul's forte ' she is really good with the romance and the passion and she gave it her best. And that is what clicked with everybody. But I also do believe that everybody on this team was a good actor. When you are a good actor, that's when they fall in love with your character; they fall in love with everything. So it is a mixture of everything-very good creativity, the entire creative team and the actors.

Totally agree with you. I too think its Barun charisma, facial nuances that added the character more believable. Everyone knew Barun did an outstanding job but people who are arguing anyone could have done ASR are those who are upset with Barun's decision nothing else.

I want to add what you mentioned about Holi scene is really true, I felt goosebumps when Arnav had tears in his eyes.

Both are amazing actors.

Exactly , actually I loved her interview and totally agree with her , it's all together that makes it successful. It's the creatives , actors , directors , even the sound, lights , camera plays a major role too.
It's a team work. I never believe that it's just the character who makes the actor, it's the actor who brings it to life, it works both ways.

About the holi scene , the way khushi said " aisa kyun hota hai arnavji " made my heart stop. Sanaya was outstanding there. She made me feel khushi's emotions.

whatever u wrote its just ditto ..

I never knew SI or BS before this.. but the promos got me hooked during my summer vacation.. so first credit goes to the IPK Cvs..

and my jaw also did not drop seeing him coming from helicopter .. its true first few episodes his acting was a bit stiff and his dialogue delivery has some problem .. i guess during the office clash barun becomes the ASR . .his flawless acting starts from there ..

The holi scene u mentioned is exactly what it was.. Barun's and sanaya's eye spoke the main thing .. awesome and superb acting there..

And i also started this show for khushi .. But its also true this whole IPK was based on ASR .. the character was sketched story was told in that way .. khushi was the girl who changed him from ASR to Arnav .. thats the story .. so storywise they gave most importance to ASR.. thats LM actually pointed out .. rather than that Khushi made a history and touched millions of hearts as its portrayed flawlessly by SI..

No need to start debate or twist his sentences so much that he degraded someone else.. its nothing like that i guess

Totally agree , I didn't think he was wrong at all in what he said . I don't know how people make it controversial always . I guess it's always like that because not everyone has similar way of thinking and there's no way everyone will agree or disagree at the same time ...

Any movie or serial has to excel in all departments in order to succeed. One or two actors might shine becuase of their talents but if overall product is not nicely packaged and supported by CVs, technical crew, actors then it will not have mass appeal.

IPK had two things going for it, which worked big time. The first was 2 extremely well written characters in Arnav and Khushi and second 2 brilliant actors who brought them to life.
While the character sketch of ARHI was what introduced most people to the show, by the end of it it was the actors that kept us glued to our screens because the characters that we started out with were long gone and brutally assassinated.
I have watched a zillion shows and movies while growing up and the story of an arrogant rich guy resisting and then ultimately falling in love with a bubby, strong but simple girl is not new but it was Barun and Sanaya who made these characters their own and made them epic like noone has before. Furthermore a huge part of the success of IPK is that Barun and Sanaya together sizzled on screen in every scene, be it angst, romance, comedy or emotions.
The CV's wasted a lot of time on mindless tracks; the 2 months of OTT comedy soon after the hate marriage were totally not needed. Many complain about the kidnapping track and yes it was stretched but that was the track which gave Sanaya and Khushi and her emotions the screen space and time she deserved. Plus if Barun had decided to leave and gave 2 months notice why did the CV's waste his time on the mindless Sheetal track which completely killed the characters of Arnav and Khushi, why not spend the time wisely on redemption, romance, family togetherness and growth of ARHI as a couple?
