Here's my two cents on why I think bhaiyya is leaving at this specific moment.
Bhaiyya always wanted to be in Bollywood. A while back I saw an interview with bhaiyya in which he said that before he moved to Bombay, his mother cautioned him saying "har koi SRK nahin banta". It was clear whose success story he wanted to emulate.
In that context TV and ads were always just things he did to build his resume and as a source of steady income. That was never supposed to be the focus.
All through the years he worked in Shraddha, Dil Mil Gayye, Baat Hamari Pakki Hai, he had no option but to continue with TV because there was nothing else on the horizon.
Ironically it was IPKKND's success and fan following that allowed him to finally jump ship to an extent. Had the show not been popular, he would have continued to seek work on TV. This is such a classic TV star pattern. Wash, rinse, repeat. Amar Upadhyay, Rajeev Khandelwal, Iqbal Khan, Vikas Manaktala, Eijaz Khan, KSG and now Barun.
It's funny, apart from SRK, the others who've successfully managed a TV to film transition were never heartthrobs on TV and were never very strongly identified with a single character in a show. Vidya, Irfan Khan, Madhavan, Ayushmann have all beaten the TV curse. Unfortunately, I think for bhaiyya the identification with ASR is so complete that he'd never be able to shake off that character for the rest of his working life.
