So anyway, let me start.
Barun Sobti, the 'King of Expressions'?
When someone says 'King of expressions', Sobti is the one that come to my mind. This is not because I believe Sobti is the king of expressions, its just that I've seen so many people call him this that it gets stuck in your mind.
Anyway, I think no actor in this world can be the King of expressions. Though some actors might master depiction of one emotion or the other but they can't master all of them because what comes naturally obviously feels more original than acting.
Personally, I like Sobit's acting. For me, the subtlety in his acting gives a more natural touch to him and it makes it more believable. His nonchalance, his minute changes in expression, they are more liked by me because I think from the small experience in plays that it is easier to give OTT expressions but not that simple to convey emotions with minute changes in facial expression and gestures.
Also, I've seen many actors who act so OTT the it puts me off because personally I'm not a very emotive person but the way Sobti expresses Arnav's anger, happiness, irritation, its similar to how I know how to display my real emotions. I can relate to it, that is why it appeals to me.
So, right now Sobti is hovering in my list of really generally good actors and if I catagorise actors regarding their depiction of anger or hurt, Sobti is among the list of best actors I've seen so far. But he is not the best. There are far more... I won't say experienced because not all those who have shitload of experiece are good... so there are far more polished actors than Sobti is but regardless, he is good.
Now that I've given my views, I'll say something else.
You have to agree that everyone responds to a single thing different. Some like it. Some don't. For some, its OTT and for some it is too subtle. I mean you won't ever find a point where everyone agrees and is contended. e.g. some say the Diwali almost-kiss was too passionate a scene for Indian drama and some say that it should have been, I quote, 'a long, hot and wet kiss'.
Though it is a debate, I can say that its like an open-ended question because it has too many things to be discussed. And even if you discuss them, there will still be a million things left to discuss because until the time we have seen all that Sobti can give to the screen, meaning his WHOLE acting career, whether it is going to be for another year for for 4 decades, we can't truly judge his capacity as an actor. So no one can say for sure that whether he is going to be the cream of the crop or just a person with 5 minutes of limelight. So everyone can debate but no one can be sure.
And even if we see all all of Sobti's acting career, even then no one can declare that he is good or not.
What I mean to say that though no one can deny that he can act, but at the end, it comes down to personal preference at the amount of good an actor, you think Sobti or any other actor. And not just the matter of acting but the matter of looks, dialogue delivery, social interaction, everything is just to relative or rather depends too much on preference that you can't put one universal stamp whether he is a good actor or not, whether he is handsome or not, whether he has people skills or not or whether people like his people skills or not.
Different things appeal to different people and though we might discuss it till we die but no one of us stand in the position to declare universally that Sobti is a good actor or not. We can voice our personal opinion but we will always find people who don't agree with us and we will find people who we don't agree with.
So no matter how much we break apart every second of what Sobti acted but at the end, it will always be personal preference.
All we can do it debate. But we can't declare anything as a universal truth.
