"Life is going to be difficult," he thought.
He believed it couldn't get any worse. She meant everything to him; now, he was forced to live without her. From the time the doctors pronounced her dead, he had been unstable. He could not think steadily about anything; only thoughts of her were fixed in his mind.
"She vowed to stay with me," he thought. "How could she leave me' just like that?"
But he knew she was not the at fault. It was fate, but he didn't expect it to be so cruel. And he did not believe in fate until he lost her. He wished he accompanied her in her death too. He lay completely devasted and blank on the bed, staring at the ceiling motionlessly. Riding back through his memory, he relieved their times together.
The day he met her for the first time was so etched in his mind that even after being buried in grave, he would still remember it. He could still remember how he saw her in the train. The trains of those days had a lot of ventilation; open doors, grilled windows and long cushioned seats. He met her in the Delhi train when going back home for vacation. e glanced at his cabin compartment, before he sat on his space. He looked around to see any sort of entertainment to help him through this long, boring train journey. It was then he saw her. She was wearing a beautiful, elegant white churidhar with a her dupatta loosely hung her slender shoulders. Her tresses flew in the air like silk. Her brown, perfectly doe shaped eye was studying her book so intently. He sat there studying her gorgeousness. He had never before felt a sudden spark or vibration upon seeing a girl. He felt like he was floating just by looking at her; he felt as if a thousand butterflies and stars flying around and through him. He felt so weak at his knees. Arnav had always thought his mom was the most beautiful lady he'd ever seen; but now, sitting opposite this girl, he couldn't take his eyes off her: her attractive glue eyes, her stunningly soft skin and the fine-looking black hair of which the strands fell beautifully on her brow, mesmerized him. The wind that blew, picked up her lavender smell and it was heaven for his nostrills. It filled his heart with her smell
He sighed seeing her, and fast beating of his heart forced him off from his seat to walk away down the aisle, so he could relax himself. He needed some fresh air to breathe. This girl was making him hyperventilate at the first glimpse. Unbelievable!!
She noticed him looking at her every now and then and was puzzled by his sudden, weird behavior. She had no idea who he was. All she had noticed were the random dreamy looks he had given her. She was totally baffled. Curious to find out what he was up to, she got up and walked behind him. Khushi saw him standing beside the open train doors, watching the water pour from the dark gray skies. She came and stood behind him in confusion, wondering if she was supposed to start a conversation and she did.
"You came out to get a smoke?"
"No I' I' don't smoke," he said with a slight smirk.
"I am Khushi, Khushi Gupta," she said and put her hand out.
"Arnav Singh Raizada," he said.
He was taken aback by the delicacy and the softness of her hand and her voice was musical to ears. His heart began pounding forcefully against his ribs. Seeing Khushi right beside him, talking to him, he didn't want to waste a minute. He still remembered how he tried to talk to her at the very first glance. He didn't know what to talk though. They have just met and he felt it wouldn't be appropriate to propose her. But he couldn't resist. He thought he wouldn't get another chance, and he didn't want to miss her. Even before he knew, he heard his voice.
He started saying, "Khushi, I love you."
"What the heck?" said Khushi.
"What?!?" she asked baffled, stunned and worried. She turned around to get to her cabin, so that she can get away from him. He surely was a weird guy.
"Hey' ermm don't judge' I don't mean it in a weird way but I' I really have fallen in love with you. The moment I saw you, there was a pounding heartbeat and angels with white dresses. And have you read about the "thunderbolt" in the book Godfather? These just happened in just a matter of seconds'it all happened the second I saw you. I have never felt this way Khushi, believe me. I really have fallen in love with you!" he ended with a sigh.
While Khushi listened to this guy talk, a small smile appeared on her face. Then she replied, "What do you expect me to say now?!" She began stuttering because she didn't know how to react or respond to this guy whom she met some minutes ago.
"See, I' I don't' believe in' love at first sight you know; in fact, love is farthest topic from my mind. You seem to be nice guy. I was just trying to be friendly, but there is no love! And moreover we just met."
Her emphasis on the phrase no love, left a sour taste in his mouth. His smile faded away; his heart felt heavy all of a sudden and it felt like as if he was choking.
Khushi continues, "How can you fall in love with someone you just met a few minutes ago? I don't understand at all! You just saw me for the first time, and you don't even know me, and I don't know you either. It is an attraction then, right? Attraction is just a feeling of lust. Lust cannot'"
"No!" Arnav jumped in quickly to tell her, "It is love. It is not lust. Lust does not make you feel someone to make you wanna live with them. I wanna live with you Khushi; spend every moment with you. I have never felt this way before about any girl I have seen. I have fallen in love with you' completely," Arnav ended the sentence with a heavy sigh.
"I think to fall in love, one must know each other. We must understand each other. Our likes, dislikes'"
"Ah well, we can talk then. We'll hang out sometime'. if you wish," he interrupted.
"That's not easy."
"Why not?" he asked.
"Because I don't want to and I am sure my dad would'"
"Trust me, your dad will not be a problem. He would be more than happy to have a son-in-law like me, " he smirked.
"Accha, really?"
"Really!" he said it with a grin.
There was a long awkward pause before he began speaking again. And even before speaking Arnav swiftly ran his eyes on her neck and her hands. She was not wearing any Mangalsutra and nor was her partition filled with sindoor. And her long slender fingers, there were no ring on it. But just to make sure he asked her
"Fine Khushi, just' just answer me these questions please: are you married?"
"No."
"Do you like someone?"
"No," she smiled.
"Do you have a boyfriend?"
"Nope."
"Now that's enough!" Arnav heart just somersaulted.
"And how are these questions gonna help you?" She asked raising her brow at her him.
"You'll come to know about it soon. No matter where you are, I'll come into your life. I'll come into your life, and I'll sweep you off your feet Miss!"
"Yeah?"
"Yes!" he answered with so much confidence.
Khushi turned around and left, utterly shocked by his behavior and his proclamation of love. The conversation kept on getting awkward-er and weird. This guy really needs some help she thought.
Arnav sat on his on his bed and laughed as he remembered that day on train. "I was crazy!" he told to himself. He wondered how a woman could still look so sizzling yet so innocent. Thoughts of Khushi always brought a smile to his face.
After that incident in the train, Arnav spent a month looking for Khushi. He remembered her saying that she was studying FE Institute of Art and Design in Mumbai and she works as a librarian at a library close by. She loves reading books.
"She was a poem of every writer," he thought.
They very next day, Arnav made a trip to the university looking for her. After checking the student roster, he found that Khushi had already left for Mumbai.
That night he spent his afternoon with his best friend, Aakash, telling him the havoc that this girl has caused in his heart.
"Dude, why do I feel like you have been watching too much Bollywood movies lately?" laughed Aakash before sipping into his beer
"Pagal ho gaya ho tum! There are just way too many fishes out here in the campus dude and you are blabbering about some random chick that you saw in the train. Like really dude?!"
Arnav was surely not ready for all the crap that Aakash had to give him. While Aakash continued his blabbering, Arnav was lost in his thoughts and Aakash's voice was fading away in the background for him. He did not even have to think about it; he knew he was going to go Mumbai' for her!
"Some guys do crazy stuff for their love, why can't I go Mumbai" he told replied. "And moreover, I don't care about the fishes out there! And also I don't care how stupid Imma sound right now but dude, I have found my nemo!" saying that Arnav grabbed his jacket and left the bar leaving a baffled and confused Aakash behind. Taking a flight the very next day, he landed in Mumbai to find her; the love of his life, Khushi. In a city where you can find people in every corner, he was set out to find this one special girl. It was as crazy as it sounded. He was in some unknown city to find a girl' A girl that clean bowled him at the very first sight. A year ago if anyone would have told him that he would be running behind a girl whom he had no clue about, someone whom he have met only once and whose whereabouts were totally unknown, he would be laughing. But today, nothing seems more right than anything to be here for her. Love makes anyone to anything.
"So, here I am," he sighed looking around the city outside from the airport.
Arnav, carried his luggage out the airport to check into a closest hotel to begin his search hunt.
He began visiting the closest libraries around Khushi's college: Kalrashukla library, Reach Library, Unnati Books, Dnyanda Library, ReadSure Library and more.
All he had left to visit was the Reader's Treasure Library. When he arrived there, he was too nervous to enter. "What if I don't find her? Have I lost her already? Will I have her back in my life? What if there is no one like her?" It might seem stupid to think about all these questions but he couldn't help it. All sorts of questions gushed through his mind. He wanted to go in, but he was too tense to do so. He moved his feet across the pavement towards the library and saw himself reflecting in the main door glass. Who knew the last library was holding his treasure?
He opened the doors and felt the cool air flow through and past; he closed his eyes, feeling the air. Slowing opening the doors, getting his view straight on the circulation table, a content smile appeared on his face.
"One of those blessed moments of his life," he thought.
He found her sitting at the circulation desk quietly, checking out books. Arnav was mesmerized once again by her beauty. He stood there studying her, and how she sighed and pouted looking at the amount of books she has to check-in and clear. He couldn't resist anymore. He inhaled deeply and walked towards the main door without moving his off her.
Arnav slowly walked up to her and said a husky "hi beautiful"
Khushi was dumbfound to see Arnav standing close to her, leaning towards the desk in midst of all the crowd around. She wondered what in world is this guy and what was he doing here? He found her? She gasped.
Arnav smiled brightly and moved closer to her ear and whispered, "Expected?" He grinned. "Didn't expect to find me here so soon?"
"WH'what are you doing here?"
"Didn't I tell you, that I will come for you no matter where you; to make you realize that I want you in my life. To make you realize that I have actually, irrevocably have fallen in love with you. So here I am." He smirked
Khushi was bemused! She started, "You know, no one has done this for me. Coming all the way just for a girl, just to show her how much you love her. And that too is falling for her just by looking at her. You are unbelievable! Don't you think it's a little too much?" Overwhelmed Khushi questioned him.
"Too much? You have not yet seen what all I could do love," Grinned Arnav. "Didn't I tell you, I'll come just for you, just to get you; because I love you Khushi and I want you to be a part of my life."
"This guy was actually something," Khushi thought. She of course liked him but she couldn't trust someone just like that! She needed time to know. This guy did make her feel nervous and all but is it love? Whatever it is, she wouldn't let him know that she likes him too."
"So Arnav, you think that coming all the way for me and trying to woo will make me like you?"
"I know you are going to deny but it is so visible in your eyes that you do feel something for me too," replied Arnav with his sexy smirk
"You really need to stop smirking like that'"
"I know you like it love."
Arnav leaned more closer and softly placed a quick kiss on Khushi's cheek. Khushi's eyes widened in surprise and her mouth shaped in a perfect 'O' indicating her state of shock. She was like paralyzed. What more can this guy do now.
Gathering all his courage, Arnav jumped on top of the circulation desk and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, May I have your attention please!"
Everyone at the library diverted their attention on Arnav. Libraries were meant to be quiet, and people weren't supposed to distract each other. The crowd stared at him in disbelief, some with annoyance and some even with surprise.
Khushi's mouth dropped open wondering why he is having every ones attention.
"I am Arnav and this is Khushi. I met her a few months back in Delhi and instantly fell for," Arnav smiled. "Today, right here, I am going to confess my love for this gorgeous looking woman who is standing right beside me. She says we need to know each other to fall in love. I am ready for it. The more I am going to be with her, the more my love will grow for her. I am already so in love with her'like completely. So, I am going to ask her out in front of all of you lovely people."
Arnav turned to look at Khushi completely astounded. He knelt down in front of her and looking into her eyes, he asked, "Khushi, would you like to go out on a date with me? Will you be my girlfriend?"
Khushi was almost in tears; covering half of her face with her hands in disbelief.
Arnav was concerned seeing tears in here eyes so he got off the desk and held her hand in hand.
"Arnav, you are one awesome guy. Everything you do and anything you do can instantaneously make a girl fall for you but I' don't know if this relationship is going to work ou'"
"Let's make it happen Khushi. I believe there is nothing impossible and I am sure we can make this work. Will you?"
With few tears dropping out from her eyes, Khushi shakes her head, "Yes."
Arnav felt as if like he was floating. Life could not get any better he thought. For a second he felt the whole world was at his feet; everything seemed so perfect, just so perfect! He moved himself closer to her and slid his hand around her waist pulling her closer to him. He stood there with his forehead touching her smiling at the tears of joy that was streaming down her eyes along with his. He held her so close that he could here her heartbeat due to nervousness. He then placed a very soft kiss on her forehead, letting his lips linger on her soft skin for a while.
Unknowing what to do, she quickly hugged him and said, "I love you!"
The people around were quite astonished by what this guy could do. Even though the episode seemed quite filmy, some stood up to applaud and congratulate them.
The public around witnessed this good-looking couple glowing like a thousand-watt bulb. Arnav and Khushi headed out from the library hand-in-hand, each with a smile that could enlighten the whole city. They were the most joyous couple on earth at that time. It was like they both just walked out of a fairytale. Everything around was beautiful and Arnav had found his treasure. Holding hands, Arnav and Khushi entered a nearby coffee shop. He made her sit in one of those corner tables.
He bent down close to her face and said, "Lemme get you some flowers, beautiful." Placing a soft kiss and giving her a warm smile, he ran outside the door to find a nearby flower shop.
Khushi couldn't help but awe at this guy. How did she get lucky all of a sudden? When and where did he all of a sudden come to make her life so colorful? She sighed in contentment waiting for him, looking out the window
Arnav was at a bouquet store 10 minutes away from the coffee shop. As he grabbed the fresh, red roses and turned to walk towards the coffee shop, he was blown away by the heat that the sudden explosion generated. His body flew through the lamp post hitting his spine hardly. Arnav became unconscious with a loud yelp and collapsed on the road. Everything dissolved with the smoke around making nothing visible. Smoke, dust and commotions filled the streets.
When Arnav woke up, he found him in the hospital staring at the ceiling. After the explosion, Arnav didn't see Khushi. That was the last time he saw her and he was never going to see her again.
At the end of his memory lane, tears were swelling out of Arnav's eyes. Doctors said she was one among the severely injured and she died on the way to the hospital; Moreover the doctors said she was barely breathing when she was on the ambulance.
Arnav couldn't digest the thought that Khushi is not living anymore. She is dead! Why did this have to happen to me? She was the best ever thing that has ever happened to me. She is no more! He cried bitterly. His heart was breaking. He could feel it bleeding. Unable to bare the pain, Arnav pulled the knife nearby from the fruit basket and felt like stabbing himself. He wanted to let his soul free because suffering without Khushi is not bare-able and cannot be described in words. He was too weak to kill himself'thoughts of Khushi kept him alive. He dropped down the knife and fell off bed on his knees. He hid his face in his hands and shut his eyes tightly. He cried screaming in agony and pain and wishing everything would stop right now; he never wanted to wake up!
Outside the room, at the far end of the hallway, the newscaster was reporting of this devastating incident, the Mumbai City Bombing.
